I woke up this saturday morning to the sound of trucks and cranes cramming their way onto the promenade right in front of my home. After rubbing the salmiakki induced blur from my eyes, it became obvious that it was a bunch of volunteer city workers in process of building up the flood barrier. At the moment, water levels are less than a foot under street level, and expected to rise 2-3 foot over the weekend. Our cellar is already flooded, and I was kindof hoping on a forced holiday due to Emmerich city center flooding, but alas!

There are also viewing platforms with a spectacular view of the falls built on both sides of the Rhine. These are reached via steep and narrow stairs (access by fee on the Schloss Laufen side). Guided tours of various lengths start from Schloss Laufen on the Zürich side of the falls - a youth hostel is also located in Schloss Laufen. Various restaurants are located in Schloss Laufen, Schloss Wörth and the Rheinfall park.

High Rhine
The High Rhine (German: Hochrhein) is the name used in Germany for the part of the Rhine River that flows westbound from Lake Constance to Basel.
The High Rhine begins at the out flow of the Rhine from the Untersee in Stein am Rhein and turns into the Upper Rhine in Basel. In contrast to the Alpine Rhine and Upper Rhine, the High Rhine flows mostly to the west.
The section is marked by Rhine-kilometers 0 to 165, measurements beginning at the outflow of the Obersee at the Old Rhine Bridge in Constance. It is the first of four sections (High Rhine, Upper Rhine, Middle Rhine, Lower Rhine) of the Rhine between Lake Constance and the North Sea. In Switzerland, similar names refer to different parts. In the western part, the Rhine marks the border between Germany and Switzerland, while in the eastern part, Switzerland owns also areas north of the Rhine, surrounding the German exclave of Büsingen.
The term High Rhine was introduced by scientists in the 19th century. Above all geologists tried to differentiate the High Rhine linguistically from the Upper Rhine. Until the 19th century, it was also known as the "Badisch-Swiss Rhine".

Geology
The Rhine Falls were formed in the last ice age, approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago, by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed. The first glacial advances created today's landforms approximately 500,000 years ago. Up to the end of the Wolstonian Stage approximately 132,000 years ago, the Rhine flowed westwards from Schaffhausen past Klettgau. This earlier riverbed later filled up with gravel.

Neuhausen am Rheinfall
Neuhausen am Rheinfall (which was officially called Neuhausen until 1938) is a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland.
The little town is well known for the Rhine Falls, a tourist attraction and mainland Europe's largest waterfall.
History
Neuhausen am Rheinfall is first mentioned in 900/910 as Niuhusen. In 1253 it was mentioned as Niuwenhusin.
Coat of arms
The German blazon reads: In gelb über grünem Kleeblatt weisses nach rechts gekehrtes Rebmesser mit braunem Griff.
The municipality’s arms might in English heraldic language be described thus: Or in base a cloverleaf couped proper above which a billhook argent hafted proper.
In 1569, Neuhausen bore arms with a gold field and a leaping silver salmon. This symbolized the importance of fishing to the municipality. Shortly thereafter, the arms appeared with different tinctures; the field was now red. With the lessening importance of fishing, the arms, too, presumably ended up being forgotten, for in 1822, arms appeared bearing the current charges, the cloverleaf and the billhook. These two charges illustrate nothing extraordinary and likely stem from the sealmaker’s lack of imagination, for he also chose the same charges for many other municipalities in the Schaffhausen area.

I woke up this saturday morning to the sound of trucks and cranes cramming their way onto the promenade right in front of my home. After rubbing the salmiakki induced blur from my eyes, it became obvious that it was a bunch of volunteer city workers in process of building up the flood barrier. At the moment, water levels are less than a foot under street level, and expected to rise 2-3 foot over the weekend. Our cellar is already flooded, and I was kindof hoping on a forced holiday due to Emmerich city center flooding, but alas!

The River Rhine is one of the most beautiful and scenic areas of Germany. On a recommendation we took the KB River Boat cruise down the Rhine River and it paid off big time! Without taking this boat cruise, or the train up to Koblenz, its hard to see this area of Germany if you are on a time crunch traveling. Nonetheless, the River Rhine is lined with stunning wine vineyards, ancient Rhine River castles, and plenty of towns with oozing character. Our journey begins in Koblenz. In around 1000 A.D. a castle was built on a knoll on the east bank of the Rhine and Castle Ehrenbreitstein gradually developed. Europe’s second largest fortress was given its appearance as we see it today, between 1817 and 1828. From the Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century, Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier and in 1794 it was taken over by France and in 1815, by Prussia. Following the Rhine, our journey leads to Boppard where town houses, stately homes and churches form the romantic old town. After the invasion of the Alemanni, a city wall was built in order to protect what was a toll castle and today the town has developed into an attractive tourist destination surrounded by woods and vineyards. We pass by a high rock on a sharp bend where the Rhine is barely a hundred and thirteen metres wide. Legend tells of a beautiful mermaid, Loreley , who enchanted and distracted sailors with her singing in order that their boats would be destroyed on the rocks. Soon, the river becomes more tranquil. Slowly the craggy slopes change to vineyards and the river valley widens. Bacharach nestles in the confluence of the Steeger Valley, into the extensive Rhine Valley, protected by a sturdy wall. Above the town is the Stahleck Fortress that was first recorded in 1095 and became the residence of the Count Of Palatine On The Rhine, in 1142. The conclusion of our journey, Rüdesheim is a picturesque town that boasts more visitors than residents, its sunny location making it ideal for viticulture. A mediaeval church, wooden buildings and stately homes, and the famous Drosselgasse, characterise the city. The Middle Rhine Valley reflects the history of Europe. With cultural monuments and cultivated countryside, crowded settlements along narrow banks and various noble castles situated on rocky ledges, it is a reflection of the romantic history of times gone by.

Without taking this boat cruise, or the train up to Koblenz, its hard to see this area of Germany if you are on a time crunch traveling. Nonetheless, the River Rhine is lined with stunning wine vineyards, ancient Rhine River castles, and plenty of towns with oozing character. Although the trip with train tickets and the boat fare is a little on the expensive side, it is definitely worth it. The picturesque Baroque town of Würzburg is located on the River Main amid the Franconian wine region and is dominated by the mighty Marienberg Fortress. The Celts created a fortress that subsequent rulers gradually extended and the oldest church in Franconia, including a massive watchtower, continues to be protected by several huge walls. Tauberbischofsheim is one of the oldest cities in the popular Tauber Valley that was once completely walled. Missionary bishop, Boniface, founded Germany’s first women's monastery in Germany in 735 A.D. and installed a family member, Lioba, as abbess, who tutored the daughters of the nobility and the Free Francs. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is where Germany’s Middle Ages have been preserved up to the present day with huge entrance gates and high walls that lead into the former imperial city.
In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy.
This fairytale castle was in construction for seventeen years and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood.
The wealth of occidental history, art and culture makes a journey on the Romantic Road a most fascinating adventure into the past. A dream journey through a country and its history.

Schwarzwald, or in english The Black Forest is located in the southwest corner of Germany in the German federal-state of Baden-Württemberg. The Black Forest is a mountainous terrain at about 200-1500 meters above sea level, the highest point being the Feldberg at 1493 m.
This ancient forest is famous for its legends and the black fir trees that dot the landscape. While not particularly high, the mountains offer a wonderful place to go hiking or mountain biking with well-marked trails. Maps available from the tourist offices. There are a few skiing resorts as well offering average but crowded conditions.
The region is famous for its cuckoo clocks, watchmaking, skiing and tourism. There is a large high-tech light engineering industry in the region stemming from the gold-mining and watchmaking days. Almost all tourists are from Germany and Switzerland; the region's tourist industry is therefore not well equipped to deal with guests who don't speak German.
The most important destination in the Schwarzwald is called Titisee, which is a medium-sized lake with associated tourist village and hotels, with very nice views and generally very relaxed and healthy activities. From here it is a short journey to Lake Constance and the city of Konstanz, or to see the Rhein Waterfall at Neuhausen in Switzerland.
Accommodations in the main tourist areas may be cheaper than many of the quaint smaller towns and villages. For a nice hut at a reasonable price, look for a privately-operated Gasthaus, which can be found in villages throughout the area. There are many pleasant surprises waiting, often with excellent home-cooked food and special service, often provided by the family living there for many generations.

High water on the Rhine, shit getting serious now - Emmerich 15/01/11
I woke up this saturday morning to the sound of trucks and cranes cramming their way onto the promenade right in front of my home. After rubbing the salmiakki induced blur from my eyes, it became obvious that it was a bunch of volunteer city workers in process of building up the flood barrier. At the moment, water levels are less than a foot under street level, and expected to rise 2-3 foot over the weekend. Our cellar is already flooded, and I was kindof hoping on a forced holiday due to Emmerich city center flooding, but alas!

The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe.
The falls are located on the High Rhine between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich. They are 150 m (450 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m³/s, while in the summer, the average water flow is 700 m³/s. The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 m³/s in 1965; and the lowest, 95 m³/s in 1921.
The nearest community is Neuhausen am Rheinfall, where tourists can also view the Wörth Castle. Boat trips can be taken up the Rhine to the falls and the Rheinfallfelsen. There are also viewing platforms with a spectacular view of the falls built on both sides of the Rhine. These are reached via steep and narrow stairs (access by fee on the Schloss Laufen side). Guided tours of various lengths start from Schloss Laufen on the Zürich side of the falls - a youth hostel is also located in Schloss Laufen. Various restaurants are located in Schloss Laufen, Schloss Wörth and the Rheinfall park.

In last year’s Tour de Suisse, stage 3 was a huge mountain stage, including the Gotthard pass at over 2,100 metres. Peter Sagan survived it all and went on to win the sprint. Don’t be surprised to see the World Champion this year’s 3rd stage also, albeit he doesn’t need to reach that high as arrival place Rheinfelden is situated on the banks of the Rhine. In fact, the river is navigable by ship from Rheinfelden all the way to the estuary in the North Sea.
There is a Swiss and a German Rheinfelden, both on a different side of the river. The two cities were one until Napoleon Bonaparte fixed the Swiss-German border in the middle of the old bridge connecting the two halves of the town.

Mr. Bendt served with distinction in the European theatre of World War II. Mr. Bendt was a "D-Day plus 6" U.S. Army soldier in the 2nd Armored Division (“Hell on Wheels”), which served a critical role in securing Allied victory in Europe.
Mr. Bendt fought in several major engagements, including the United States forces' highest casualty operation of the war, the infamous Battle of the Bulge, where over 89,000 Americans were killed, wounded, or captured in the space of about three weeks.
Mr. Bendt's 9-man squad in particular suffered an extraordinarily high rate of casualties as the Division fought its way from Omaha Beach to the Rhine river. Bendt himself narrowly avoided death several times, and was held briefly as a prisoner of war before making good his escape.
Mr. Bendt and the other soldiers who proudly bore the banner "Hell on Wheels" played a key role in liberating France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as the 2nd Armored Division rolled through the Western Front before finally invading Germany to end the war in Europe.
Mr. Bendt’s awards include The Bronze Star Medal for heroic or meritorious achievement or service in a combat zone.
