Tem vindo a ser utilizada na América do Sul desde, pelo menos, o século XVI por motivos divinatórios e curativos. Há cada vez mais Ocidentais a viajar para o Perú em busca desta experiência xamânica. São conhecidos como ‘turistas espirituais’. “El Espejo del Espíritu” segue, em primeiro lugar, o dia-a-dia de Don Ignacio, um velho xamã de Puerto Maldonado; Sergio, um turista ocasional e Osman, um toxicodependente em recuperação buscando cura e iluminação. Todos os personagens são como os afluentes dum mesmo rio convergindo até à Ayahuasca por diferentes razões pessoais. É chamada a ‘liana da alma’ e origina poderosas visões introspectivas àqueles que se atrevem a bebê-la. Perto de Pucallpa, conhecemos também o Maestro Antonio Vasquez numa comunidade do povo aborígene Shipibo-Conibo ao longo do rio Ucayali. E, na cidade de Iquitos (o epicentro deste fenómeno) somos recebidos por David ‘Slocum’ Hewson num centro holístico maioritariamente visitado por estrangeiros. A primeira parte deste filme foi a minha tese de mestrado em Antropologia Visual e Filme Etnográfico com o Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology da Universidade de Manchester (2013). Não procurei documentar os já especialistas sobre o assunto, mas sim dar voz a todos os que se surgiram acidentalmente nesta minha trajetória observacional de descoberta; para melhor entender os mistérios da medicina tradicional através das plantas, compreender a diferença entre curandeiros e charlatães e estudar a mimesis cultural entre nativos da Amazónia e turistas espirituais.
