Ranjit Chowdhry
Ranjit Chowdhry (alternate spellings: Ranjit Chowdhary / Ranjit Chowdhury) is an Indian actor, with around forty movies and television performances to his credit, besides acting in theatre as well. Varied spellings of his names have been used in credits. He has also appeared in several episodes of The Office, as Vikram, a telemarketer who worked with Michael, and is briefly hired for The Michael Scott Paper Company.
For his role as Rocky in Deepa Mehta's 2002 film Bollywood/Hollywood, he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role at the 23rd Genie Awards His other most noted role, in recent times has been, Queen Latifah starrer, Last Holiday (2006).
Biography
Ranjit was born and brought up in Mumbai in a family with theatre background, where he received his early education at Campion School, Mumbai and started his acting career. His father is from a Gujjar background while his mother Pearl Padamsee was of part Jewish descent. He made his debut with Basu Chatterjee's Khatta Meetha, following which he played prominent parts in the Bollywood comedy classics such as Basu Chatterjee's Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's,Khubsoorat (1980). Thereafter, he moved to the USA in the early 1980s. He wrote the screenplay and acted in Sam & Me (directed by Deepa Mehta) which won an Honorable Mention at Cannes in 1991.

Pearl Padamsee
Pearl Padamsee (1931–2000) was an Indian theatre personality as a stage actress, director and producer of English language theatre in Mumbai active in 1950s–1990s.
She also acted a few Hindi and English language films. She performed in at least ten films including Khatta Meetha, Junoon (1978 film), Baaton Baaton Mein,Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, and Such a Long Journey.
Her after-school theatre workshops for children influenced the lives of many, even those who did not later go into the performing arts.
Personal life
Padamsee was the daughter of an Indian Jewish mother and a Christian father. Married first to a Bengali Hindu, then to a well-known Muslim personality, Pearl became the ambassador to Australia and promoted the "English theatre" in Bombay. With Alyque Padamsee, she had a daughter Raell Padamsee, who runs her own theatre company in Mumbai. She also had two children from an earlier marriage, one of them, Ranjit Chowdhry, is an actor. She converted to Christianity during the initial years of her life and is buried at a Christian Cemetery in Bandra.

Drama
Drama is the specific mode of narrative, typically fictional, represented in performance. The term comes from the Greek word δρᾶμα, drama, meaning action, which is derived from the verb δράω, draō, meaning to do or to act. The enactment of drama in theatre, performed by actors on a stage before an audience, presupposes collaborative modes of production and a collective form of reception. The structure of dramatic texts, unlike other forms of literature, is directly influenced by this collaborative production and collective reception. The early modern tragedy Hamlet (1601) by Shakespeare and the classical Athenian tragedy Oedipus the King (c. 429 BC) by Sophocles are among the masterpieces of the art of drama. A modern example is Long Day's Journey into Night (1956) by Eugene O’Neill.
The two masks associated with drama represent the traditional generic division between comedy and tragedy. They are symbols of the ancient Greek Muses, Thalia and Melpomene, the Muse of comedy represented by the laughing face, and the Muse of tragedy represented by the weeping face, respectively. Considered as a genre of poetry in general, the dramatic mode has been contrasted with the epic and the lyrical modes ever since Aristotle's Poetics (c. 335 BC)—the earliest work of dramatic theory.

Baton Baton Mein is a 1979 romantic comedy film produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The film stars Amol Palekar and Tina Munim in leading roles. David, Pearl Padamsee, Asrani, and Ranjit Choudhary appear in supporting roles. Synopsis - Rosie Perreira (Pearl Padamsee) is an overly anxious widow, living with her violin-obsessed son, Shabi (Ranjit Chowdhry) and a lovely daughter, Nancy (Tina Munim) who she would like to get married to a wealthy young man. Her brother and neighbour, Tom (David) introduces a young eligible Tony Braganza (Amol Palekar) to Nancy in the 9:10 AM Western Railway local train from Bandra to Churchgate. Tom also asks Nancy to introduce Tony to Rosie, which she does. Rosie is initially apprehensive about him as he only drawing a mere Rs.300/ compared to Nancy's Rs.700/-, but soon changes her mind when she finds out that after his probationary period he will draw a monthly pay of Rs.1000/-. Nancy and Tony are permitted to meet and both eventually fall in love. While Nancy has a past where she was betrayed by a boy whom she loved,she still likes Tony. Tony is hesitant, and this is what costs him Nancy's love, as Rosie feels that he will not come through with the marriage. And soon Rosie starts looking elsewhere for a son-in-law. Nancy does not like this but she at first accepts whatever her mom wants.Nancy and Tony have a fight and stop meeting each other in the train as well. When Tom comes to know about this he speaks to Tony's dad. Tony's dad tells tony that if he is still reluctant to make any commitments, he should tell Nancy about the same. So Nancy and Tony meet each other and Nancy tells him that she will never meet him again. It is then that Tony feels that he actually loves Nancy and cannot live without her. Then Nancy also confesses her love for him and they get married happily. Tony is hesitant, and this is what costs him Nancy's love, as Rosie feels that he will not come through with the marriage. And soon Rosie starts looking elsewhere for a son-in-law. Nancy does not like this but she at first accepts whatever her mom wants.Nancy and Tony have a fight and stop meeting each other in the train as well. When Tom comes to know about this he speaks to Tony's dad. Tony's dad tells tony that if he is still reluctant to make any commitments, he should tell Nancy about the same. So Nancy and Tony meet each other and Nancy tells him that she will never meet him again. It is then that Tony feels that he actually loves Nancy and cannot live without her. Then Nancy also confesses her love for him and they get married happily.

Tony is hesitant, and this is what costs him Nancy's love, as Rosie feels that he will not come through with the marriage. And soon Rosie starts looking elsewhere for a son-in-law. Nancy does not like this but she at first accepts whatever her mom wants.Nancy and Tony have a fight and stop meeting each other in the train as well. When Tom comes to know about this he speaks to Tony's dad. Tony's dad tells tony that if he is still reluctant to make any commitments, he should tell Nancy about the same. So Nancy and Tony meet each other and Nancy tells him that she will never meet him again. It is then that Tony feels that he actually loves Nancy and cannot live without her. Then Nancy also confesses her love for him and they get married happily.

Synopsis: A Parsi widower Homi Mistry (Ashok Kumar) is about to retire and lives in a small residence with his four sons. He decides to remarry considering that he may need emotional support and someone to take care of the house and his sons.His friend Soli (David Abraham Cheulkar) introduces him to a Parsi widow Nargis Sethna (Pearl Padamsee), Nargis has one daughter and two sons. Nancy and Tony are permitted to meet and both eventually fall in love. While Nancy has a past where she was betrayed by a boy whom she loved,she still likes Tony. Tony is hesitant, and this is what costs him Nancy's love, as Rosie feels that he will not come through with the marriage. And soon Rosie starts looking elsewhere for a son-in-law. Nancy does not like this but she at first accepts whatever her mom wants.Nancy and Tony have a fight and stop meeting each other in the train as well. When Tom comes to know about this he speaks to Tony's dad. Tony's dad tells tony that if he is still reluctant to make any commitments, he should tell Nancy about the same. So Nancy and Tony meet each other and Nancy tells him that she will never meet him again. It is then that Tony feels that he actually loves Nancy and cannot live without her. Then Nancy also confesses her love for him and they get married happily.

Episode 53 : " The Hoard "
Seth Gopinath a true miser lives alone in Malgudi. His happiness and comfort lies in the bundle of notes which he has kept in his cupboard for many years. Every morning without fail he worships each bundle of his bundles. He is the village miser who cares more about money than his own family. He never spends a rupee when he doesn't have to. His miserliness results in the death of his wife when he refuses to take her to a doctor for fear of spending his money. The sad demise of his wife soon turns into a blessing for him as he gets relieved from the expenses of the treatment. His only daughter and grandson visits him often but the constant demand for sweets by his grandson Ravi irritates him. One day in an indulgent mood he takes his grandson to see a movie. He won't spend money on sweets telling the boy they are not good for him. Ravi's constant scuffle with his grandfather provokes him to make an extreme decision. While Gopinath finds the movie entertaining the boy is bored and sneaks out of the theater to meet his friends to play cricket. Gopinath eventually realizes the boy is missing and goes in search of him. Suddenly his money is of no benefit as he searches fruitlessly for the boy. He buys a packet of sweets for him and even pays homage to the gods promising to offer a whole coconut if the boy is found. When darkness falls he makes his way back to his daughter's house and struggles to find the words to explain the situation. The story takes unusual twist which keeps the viewer thinking. Just as he is about to admit his mistake his grandson comes bouncing into the house joyous at having won his cricket match.
Malgudi Days is an Indian television series based on the works of R.K. Narayan. The series was directed by Kannada actor and director Shankar Nag. Carnatic musician L. Vaidyanathan composed the score. R. K Narayan's brother and acclaimed cartoonist R. K. Laxman was the sketch artist. The series was made in 1986 by film producer T. S. Narasimhan with Anant Nag as the lead actor. Thirty nine episodes of Malgudi Days were telecast on Doordarshan. Subsequently, it was re telecast on Doordarshan and later on Sony Entertainment Television and MAA Television in Telugu. This series was shot mostly near Agumbe in Shimoga District, Karnataka. Some episodes were also shot at Bengaluru and Devarayanadurga in Tumakuru District.

Episode 28 : " The Missing Mail "
Thanappa is the village mailman who knows everyone and knows everyone's business by virtue of reading the recipients their mail. Over the years he becomes good friends with Ramanujam and his family. Thanappa is more than just a postman to the Ramanujam family. He shares their good news and wallows in their sorrow. He watches Ramanujam's daughter Kamakshi grow up and meets Ramanujam's brother. When Kamakshi comes of age Thanappa helps the family find a suitable match by telling them about a failed matchmaking attempt involving another family in Malgudi. The young suitor and Kamakshi are compatible and the wedding is arranged for the 20th the last day before the young man leaves for two years of training. If the wedding isn't held by that date it won't take place at all. Two days before the wedding Thanappa is given an urgent letter to deliver to Ramanujam informing him of his brother's serious illness. Thanappa goes to the house, but amidst the gaiety of the wedding preparation decides not to deliver the letter. The next day a telegram arrives informing Ramanujam of his brother's death. Thanappa again delays delivering the message. Thanappa is in a dilemma whether to risk telling the family on this happy day or postpone the delivery and risk getting sacked for his efforts thus bringing to light the problems of arranged marriages in a middle class family. The wedding proceeds. Two days later Thanappa delivers the bad news to Ramanujam with his sincere apologies.

Episode 28 : " The Missing Mail "
Thanappa is the village mailman who knows everyone and knows everyone's business by virtue of reading the recipients their mail. Over the years he becomes good friends with Ramanujam and his family. Thanappa is more than just a postman to the Ramanujam family. He shares their good news and wallows in their sorrow. He watches Ramanujam's daughter Kamakshi grow up and meets Ramanujam's brother. When Kamakshi comes of age Thanappa helps the family find a suitable match by telling them about a failed matchmaking attempt involving another family in Malgudi. The young suitor and Kamakshi are compatible and the wedding is arranged for the 20th the last day before the young man leaves for two years of training. If the wedding isn't held by that date it won't take place at all. Two days before the wedding Thanappa is given an urgent letter to deliver to Ramanujam informing him of his brother's serious illness. Thanappa goes to the house, but amidst the gaiety of the wedding preparation decides not to deliver the letter. The next day a telegram arrives informing Ramanujam of his brother's death. Thanappa again delays delivering the message. Thanappa is in a dilemma whether to risk telling the family on this happy day or postpone the delivery and risk getting sacked for his efforts thus bringing to light the problems of arranged marriages in a middle class family. The wedding proceeds. Two days later Thanappa delivers the bad news to Ramanujam with his sincere apologies.

Episode 31 : " The Watchman "
It is the story of an old watchman whose duty was to keep an eye on the deep village pond. No Trespassing and No Fishing is what he needs to take care of. He does his duties with full honesty and all the genuine efforts he can play into the action at his age. However it is not possible for him to take care of this large pond alone throughout day and night. People from various age groups come to visit the place and even the animals also came wandering around. He had a lot to look after. And yes as he is alone. He have to do the routine like cooking food for himself and more. He started getting sleepless nights and tough days when eventually one by one total 3 people commit suicide by jumping into the pond at various intervals. The officials started telling him that he is getting aged.
Suicide has become almost a fashion at the small deep tank with the explanatory letter left behind. Death seems to greet him monthly till one night he heard some sounds and when he tried to oversee what is going on he found a girl was about to jump into the pond to commit suicide. Young lady in distress was already waist deep in the water. He stops her from doing it and then gets into conversation with her. That night the watchman gets acquainted with the lady’s problems. The conversation reveals the background of the girl and her reasons she is planning to commit a suicide. The watchman calms her down and try comfort her by saying that everyone has their own tough situations and sad experiences but one needs to go on with the life. We see his stories in the backdrop where his entire family was diseased in possibly cholera many years ago and he is the only survivor. Rather then being stubborn after conveying the words of wisdom he left the rest on the wisdom of the girl. And it is only many many years later that he discovers what really happened the morning after the night before. R.K. Narayan examines the stifling conditions of the Indian Woman for whom economic independence seems the only answer to their problems.
