Horticulture is the branch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of growing plants. It includes the cultivation of medicinal plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds and non-food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants. It also includes plant conservation, landscape restoration, landscape and garden design, construction, and maintenance, and arboriculture. Inside agriculture, horticulture contrasts with extensive field farming as well as animal husbandry.
Horticulturists apply their knowledge, skills, and technologies used to grow intensively produced plants for human food and non-food uses and for personal or social needs. Their work involves plant propagation and cultivation with the aim of improving plant growth, yields, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses. They work as gardeners, growers, therapists, designers, and technical advisors in the food and non-food sectors of horticulture.Horticulture even refers to the growing of plants in a field or garden.

Simply defined, Aquaponics is a small ecosystem where plants and fish can thrive together in a symbiotic relationship. Breaking the word down we have “Aqua” and “Ponics”. ”Aqua” is representative of aquaculture, where aquatic animals are farmed or raised. ”Ponics” is representative of hydroculture which when plants are cultivated using nutrient rich water. Independently, both of these systems have a significant amount of water and nutrient waste. Aquaponics is a beautiful combination of these two farming technologies. Beautiful, because when they are done together, there is no waste and their is a high yield of both plants and fish. Aquaponics systems can be built in many shapes and sizes and can well adapt to almost any climate with only minor modifications to the system.
Composting is an essential part of home food cultivation. Through composting, you can easily fuel plant growth and restore vitality to depleted soil in your garden. And while traditional composting methods may not suite everyone due to the size of your yard or amount of yard waste, we decided to show an alternative method, vermicomposting, using worms to help in the decomposition process of your kitchen waste. In this episode of Health Nuts, our friend Gregg Hayward shows that by building a simple bin and using Red Wiggler Worms, you can have a continuous flow of nutrient rich soil amendment all year round. Inside garden is a project mainly aimed at people who don’t have the chance to have a real garden outside their home, but who enjoy having a place for plants and flowers inside the place they live. I grew up with my grandparents who are cultivating their land and have plants in every corner both outside and inside their home. There, I was surrounded by nature and flowers. When I grew up and moved to different cities, I started missing a corner of nature close to me. Like many other people I bought plants for my apartment, but this wasn’t enough to bring back the feeling of my memories. So I searched, tried to remember, what was so particular between those plants and me? As a child I was making clothes for them, I was painting the pots in which they were growing. And since I started to pa...
(2002, 17 minutes) The story takes place in a sculpture installation created by Lydia Venieri. The music is improvised from children's toys and the voices generated with an Apple mac's synthesizer. It was filmed with a Canon ZR10 and edited with Apple's iMovie. Yuri, a mad scientist, attempts to awaken the human conscience. He imagines a Sleeping Beauty Conscience imprisoned at the deepest level of Universal Sleep. He decides to force people into deep hibernation and then steal their dreams. He cultivates mythological beings: Humans crossbred with everlasting plants. His dream compressor brings dreams from the immaterial world into our dimension. In Yuri's Paradise the little boy and the little girl are captives. Esmet, his Caucasian assistant, wanders around and Maria Callas appears some...

Our 4th and 5th grades have been combining community service with our Nature/Environmental Studies program by helping to restore the historic Miller Grove (which we call the Redwood Glen). This little video explains the process of eliminating invasive plants and restoring endemic species to the area. Featuring Julie Hanft (NEST teacher), Rick Misuraca (City of Mill Valley), and Betsy Bikle (Mill Valley Streamkeepers). An update this winter will explore how our students work with volunteers at the Redwood Creek Plant Nursery at Muir Woods to cultivate additional native plants for the Glen.
This is kind of the sequel to "light rain" with footage from around the Grevillea gardens after the rain cleared and the sun came out. I guess I was looking at a few different things with this footage - apart from the beauty of rain drops on flowers. I was also trying to shoot as still an image as possible - without actually shooting stills - as this is the feel I like with macro footage. So I was trying different techniques for shooting in both rain and wind with macro up to 5 x life-size. The other aspects I am always trying to build into these short collections of footage are the wider 'On the Verge' and 'Conservation by Cultivation' projects. These kind of intertwine in my life as I explore the issue of endangered Western Australian plants and the opportunities for (and challenge...
