Carnal Souls
An epic snapshot of our culture. Like watching TV on 9 different sets at once, each tuned to a different channel from the 1950s to the 70s through to the economic meltdown. The sound from the 9 TVs combine to make music.
1970s era clips show Jimmy Carter getting existential about economics and consumer capitalism, which connects to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, about a family of butchers in the 1970s whose brand of killing by hand has made them obsolete by machines. Chainsaw wielding Leatherface connects up with American Psycho in his shirt and tie uniform, with a haunting African boy from a Make Poverty History spot keeping time...
All sound (with the exception of drums) comes from the TV clips.

GOLDEN AGE - SOMEWHERE
OFFICIAL SELECTION: Vimeo Awards 2012 (experimental category last 4), Soho shorts, Onedotzero, Alphaville.
Within 'Somewhere' We are transported to a time where the boundaries between what is real and what is simulated are blurred. We live online and download places to relax, parks and shopping malls. We can even interact with our friends as if they were in the same room with simulated tele-presence. Everyone is connected and immersed in nanorobotic replications of any kind of object or furnishings, downlodable on credit based systems. Distance and time become as alien as the 'offline' The local becomes the global and the global becomes the local. Consumer based capitalism has changed forever. A truly 'glocolised' world. The singularity is near.
The film places us into this vision, observing an average inhabitant within the ever changing environment of the latest SimuHouse. From a painting to a park and from a telephone call to a shopping mall. That is until there is a leek in the system and everything malfunctions. The film concludes with the house being forced to reset, giving the character and viewer a stark reminder that nothing is 'real' even her dog, which re-materialises in front of her.

Culture is an Operating System
Whenever I'm in the city I always look around with a critical eye, trying to understand the reality we live in. I was in Oxford Street yesterday & it was honestly surreal, everyone was super image concious, absorbed in themselves & this false idea of "individuality" by still conforming to some sort of cultural norm.
It made me think of a lecture that I watched by the great "Terence Mckenna" which is called "Culture is your operating system" which is also an observation that I had made before hand.
This is a short film about human culture in England, in a day.
"I think we should all aspire to make this upgrade.
It's very important that you have all the bells and whistles on your operating system, otherwise some bodies going to get a leg up on you. Well, what's wrong with the operating system we have consumer capitalism 5.0 or whatever it is... well... its dumb, its retro, its very non competitive, its messy, it waste the environment, it waste human resources, its inefficient, it runs on stereotypes, it runs on a low sampling rate which is what creates stereotypes"

For his new project entitled ‘i-’, Jeremy Hutchison has constructed a commercial shoot using professional hand models. While ordinarily employed to hold products for advertising campaigns, here the models have been commissioned to handle lumps of clay. The products are twisted clods of mud, hollowed around the models’ immaculate palms. Perfectly ergonomic, they are tailored, customised, unique. In some ways, these are ideal consumer products.
For what do we seek in the things we consume? According to Jean-Paul Sartre, we seek our selves. Our bodies’ passage through existence is accounted for in the things we own. Momentarily, they offer us something concrete. Something to grasp, before life flashes by, things dissolve, and all matter returns to mud. Because somewhere in the recesses of our being, perhaps every consumer recognises his own organic matter in the process of consumer capitalism.
