Ffestiniog Railway – Driver’s Eye View – Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog (Wales)
We start at the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestioniog – also known as “the town that roofed the world”. Loco No. 10 “Merddin Emrys” built in 1879 simmers at that platform end ready to haul the last train of the day on a glorious sunny evening. Our train traverses a narrow ledge cut into the hillside above the quarrymen’s cottages to Tanygrisiau, before passing the deep waters of Llyn Ystradau and plunging into the darkness of Moelwyn tunnel. The original track bed lies beneath the waters of Llyn Ystradau, today the line passes the lake on a new deviation between Tanygrisiau and Dduallt that includes a spiral formation allowing the new line to loose enough height to re-join the original route. Once again our little trains clings to the wooded slopes with occasional glimpses of the River ...

Our descent continues to Boston Lodge works and onto the famed seawall to our destination at Porthmadog. I would like to offer my thanks to all the volunteers, staff and train crew for making my visit such a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Track gauge - 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm)
One question that has come up many times in the comments is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track at 07:48" - it is not easy to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them, as this train is about to do. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

Ffestiniog Railway August 2019
Second part of my 3 videos from the North Wales Holiday 2019, brought the scenes from the famous 2ft narrow gauge line of the Ffestiniog Railway.
Filmed over 8 days on my 10 day holiday with all but one of the operational engines was out in force. The failure of Merddin Emrys with a firebox problem brought out some of the smaller engines out, it was like this for two weeks and still like when I came up to start the holiday so that was fun!
So with 6 out of 10 engines was filmed with no.2 Prince wasn't filmed as i didn't seen it. Here is the list of shots included:-
Taliesin:- The Cob
Blanche & Taliesin:- Porthmadog Station & The Cob
Merddin Ermys only returned to service on the 3rd August:-
Outward legs - Boston Lodge Halt, Minffordd Station, Gwyndy Bank, Coed y Bleiddiau, New Moelwyn ...

The last intallment from our Welsh visit, takes us to the world wide renounded Ffestiniog Railway.
This 2ft line was again the result of the slate industry that boomed during the Victorian era, and first came about in 1832 as a horse & gravity drivern line until the 1850's when George England provided the lines original engines.
The lines works at Boston Lodge was most famous for producing the famous 'Double Fairle' engines, of which one features, and worked alongside the unique Hunslet 2-4-0 tender engines until the lines closure in the 1940's.
Preservation has been bright since the re-opening of the line in stages since the mid 1950's, and today the line sees an intensive year round timetable with summer being the most intence season. We take a look at two days work on the line and take in the scenery that this stunning route has to offer. Hope you enjoy!

Merddin Ermys only returned to service on the 3rd August:-
Outward legs - Boston Lodge Halt, Minffordd Station, Gwyndy Bank, Coed y Bleiddiau, New Moelwyn Tunnel, Blaenau Ffestiniog Station.
Return legs - Blaenau Ffestiniog Station running alongside the Transport for Wales class 150 no.150245, leaving Dduallt, Tan y Bwlch, Rhiw Goch, Gwyndy Bridge, The Cob & Porthmadog Station
David Lloyd George
Outward Legs - Porthmadog Station x2, The Cob x2, Penrhyn Crossing x2, Plas Halt, Tan Y Bwlch Station, Llyn Ystradau, Cwmorthin Siding.
Return Legs - Penstock Road Crossing, New Moelwyn Tunnel, Tan Y Bwlch Station, Minffordd Station, Boston Lodge Halt, The Cob & Porthmadog Station.
Lyd:- Porthmadog Station, Rhiw Plas Bridge & Tan Y Bwlch Station.
Linda:- Boston Lodge Halt, Gwyndy Bank, Rhiw Goch, Three Gates, Tank Curve, Ddaullt, Blaenau Ffestiniog Station & Barlwyd Bridge on the return.
All was filmed between 31st July - 9th August, there will a few shots where it was very windy on the cob and at the station where the picture might seem to be all over the place.
Enjoy!
