Located strategically on the western coast of India, in the Gulf of Kutch, the Kandla Port is the biggest major Port of India.
Developed as an alternative to the Karachi Port post-independence, the Kandla Port has played an important role not only in the development of India & Gujarat but also the vast, arid region of Kutch that is today a thriving hub for industries.
One of the most economical ports of India, this Multi-cargo port is also the gateway to major regions of the country.
Kandla Port created history on April 30, 2013 with the arrival of its first cape size vessel Copper Smith carrying 137,537 MT of coal from South Africa with arrival draught of 17.5 meters which was completely unloaded within 10 days. It was discharged at high sea using 24 barges and 2 floating pollution free and leak proof cranes. The barges carrying the coal were then emptied on shore by 7 bulk cargo handling machines.
The various modernization initiatives in the past 5 years have enabled the Kandla Port to achieve notable milestones.
• The cargo handled at the port has increased by almost 30 MMT (million metric tonnes) from 65 MMT to 95 MMT.
• The total cargo handling capacity has been augmented by 37 MMT from 80 MMT to 117 MMT and is expected to be three times this capacity by year 2020.
• The number of vessels handled at the port has increased by 217 from 2517 to 2734.
The port has also won several accolades some of which include;
• "The Major Port of the Year Award" at Prestigious Maritime and Logistic Awards (MALA) continuously since 2010
• Samudra Manthan Award for the best major port in 2009 and 2011.
• "Best Port of the World Award from the General Secretary, International Maritime Organization (IMO) for to the welfare of the Seafarers" in 2012.
The biggest major port of India is all set to chart a new & innovative chapter of converting the draught limitations into achievements in its glorious history.

Kandla, also known as the Kandla Port Trust (Gujarati: કંડલા) is a seaport in Kutch District of Gujarat state in western India, near the city of Gandhidham. Located on the Gulf of Kutch, it is one of major ports on west coast. Kandla was constructed in the 1950s as the chief seaport serving western India, after the partition of India from Pakistan left the port of Karachi in Pakistan.
The Port of Kandla is located on the Gulf of Kutch on the northwestern coast of India some 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai (Bombay). It is the largest port of India by volume of cargo handled. Kandla history kandla Port Trust, India's busiest major port in recent years, is gearing to add substantial cargo handling capacity with private sector participation. The west coast port handled 72.225 million tonnes of cargo in 2008-09, over 11 per cent more than 64.920 million tonnes handled in 2007-08.
Even as much of this growth has come from handling of crude oil imports, mainly for Essar Oil's Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, the port is also taking measures to boost non-POL cargo. Last fiscal, POL traffic accounted for 63 per cent of the total cargo handled at Kandla Port, as against 59 per cent in 2007-08.
