The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
Sidney Salkow (June 16, 1911 – October 18, 2000) was an American film director (more than 50 motion pictures), screenwriter, and television director.
Salkow was educated at the City College of New York, Columbia University and Harvard Law School. After school he returned to New York City and became an assistant director of theater and playwright. Later on he then established himself as a theatrical director. In 1932, he joined up with the film industry starting as a dialogue director but soon later, after achieving the ranks, he became a prolific writer/director of such films as Sitting Bull, Twice-Told Tales, and The Last Man on Earth (the last two both starring Vincent Price).
During World War II Salkow was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Major. He was wounded whilst filming a battle on an aircraft carrier.
Additionally, Salkow directed episodes of many popular TV series including Lassie, The Cisco Kid, and The Addams Family.
At the age of 59, Salkow retired from directing, and taught film courses at California State University-Northridge, where he became a professor emeritus and headed the film side of the Radio, Television and Film Department. He died October 18, 2000 in Valley Village, California from natural causes at the age of 89.
Charles Van Enger (1890–1980) was an American cinematographer. In the 1920s Van Enger worked on all the silent films the German director Ernst Lubitsch made for Warner Brothers. During the 1930s he worked in the British film industry. His later work was largely on supporting features for Universal Pictures and various independents.
George Waggner (September 7, 1894 - December 11, 1984) was an American film director, producer and actor.
Born in New York City, he made his film debut as Yousayef in The Sheik (1921). He later went on to appearances in Western films. The first film he directed was Western Trails (1938).
In the 1960s, he directed episodes of the television series Maverick, Batman, The Green Hornet, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. He directed John Wayne and Oliver Hardy wearing coonskin caps in The Fighting Kentuckian (1949), in which his daughter, Shy Waggner, appeared in a cameo. His career in film declined in the 1950s, due to the popularity of television, and he eventually moved to television late in the decade.
He directed Red Nightmare, a Cold War propaganda film produced by the Department of Defense and narrated by Jack Webb. Waggner wrote the film Queen of the Yukon based on a story by Jack London.
Waggner's wife was Danny Shannon. The couple had only one child, Shy, born in 1924, and two grandchildren, Sherry and Robert.
