The Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) is a small passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. The bird is easily recognisable by its blue and yellow plumage, but various authorities dispute their scientific classification.
Eurasian blue tits, usually resident and non-migratory birds, are widespread and a common resident breeder throughout temperate and subarctic Europe and western Asia in deciduous or mixed woodlands with a high proportion of oak. They usually nest in tree holes, although they easily adapt to nest boxes where necessary. Their main rival for nests and in the search for food is the larger great tit.
The Eurasian blue tit prefers insects and spiders for its diet. Outside the breeding season, they also eat seeds and other vegetable-based foods. The birds are famed for their skill, as they can cling to the outermost branches and hang upside down when looking for food.
The Eurasian blue tit was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae under the binomial name Parus caeruleus.Parus is the classical Latin for a tit and caeruleus is the Latin for dark blue or cerulean. Two centuries earlier, before the introduction of the binomial nomenclature, the same Latin name had been used by the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner when he described and illustrated the blue tit in his Historiae animalium of 1555.
Blue is the colour between violet and green on the optical spectrum of visible light. Human eyes perceive blue when observing light with a wavelength between 450 and 495 nanometres. Blues with a higher frequency and thus a shorter wavelength gradually look more violet, while those with a lower frequency and a longer wavelength gradually appear more green. Pure blue, in the middle, has a wavelength of 470 nanometres. In painting and traditional colour theory, blue is one of the three primary colours of pigments, along with red and yellow, which can be mixed to form a wide gamut of colours. Red and blue mixed together form violet, blue and yellow together form green. Blue is also a primary colour in the RGB colour model, used to create all the colours on the screen of a television or computer monitor.
The modern English word blue comes from Middle English bleu or blewe, from the Old French bleu, a word of Germanic origin, related to the Old High German word blao. The clear sky and the deep sea appear blue because of an optical effect known as Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, the blue wavelengths are scattered more widely by the oxygen and nitrogen molecules, and more blue comes to our eyes. Rayleigh scattering also explains blue eyes; there is no blue pigment in blue eyes. Distant objects appear more blue because of another optical effect called atmospheric perspective.

I almost didn't film the Blue Tit Family as it has been over three years since we had them nesting and the camera in the nesting box needs replacing. The video, taken from our TV, also had quite a lot of interference but I have tried to correct it. However, if you can put up with all the faults, it is worth seeing how our Blue Tit Family got on this year.

Another 'harvest' of this season, two Blue Tit chicks. Comparing to my previous Great Tits, these are surprisingly much noisier and permanently more hungry despite smaller size ;)

Blue Tit fledglings in our garden. Never been able to film this before (or since). I was not going to reply to comments about this video but as some people seem to think every thing in nature is only 'one way' and I am in someway a 'bad person' I would like to put them straight. Just because our two cats were in the garden for some of the time with these chicks you should not assume that they would automatically attack them, the proof is on the video - the cats were far more curious and were on the receiveing end of the chicks beaks and claws on more than one occassion as can be seen. In fact the brown one kept his distance except for one or two instances, the other cat (sadly no longer with us) was younger and far more interested but she was 'attacked' by the chicks a couple of times,...

A nice surprise today when the pair of Blue Tits started nest building in my side view nest box! The first real sign this could be about to happen was around 9.30am when the female did the odd nest wriggle. It was around 11am that I placed the nest box plate with a smaller hole on my other nest box where all the fights had taken place recently but it seems they had already decided to give this box a try and who can blame them! Just hope the Great Tit stays well away from this one!

In May 2016 I bought my wife a bird box with webcam for her birthday. It was too late for any birds to have any young that year, as they would have been already laying their eggs by then. However this year we had our first nesting Blue Tits, with a clutch of seven eggs. Enjoy the ups and downs of life in a bird’s nest!

Details of today's visits, difficult to work out what is going on at times! The video starts with the male (I think!) coming in, this is followed by what I believe to be a new Blue Tit appearing on the outside of the box, looking at its head the markings are a lot more defined than the usual female, the male inside stays put. (2 mins 12 secs) the male comes in (2 mins 51 secs) who I believe to be the original female turns up. (5 mins 34 secs) male comes in (6 mins 19 secs) original female turns up again, but then the male does some nest wriggles which I didn't think they were meant to do? (8 mins 8 secs) male turns up then goes in (8 mins 55 secs) original female again and male nest wriggle again. (10 mins 30 secs) male comes in then more wriggles. (11 mins 7 secs) original female comes in...
*WARNING* SOME VIEWERS MAY FIND PARTS OF THIS VIDEO DISTRESSING* Some early morning nest building by the Blue Tit but then at just before 9.15am a Great Tit turns up whilst the Blue Tit was inside the nest box and yet another fight occurs. I have to say that I thought the Great Tit had killed the Blue Tit but after about 5 minutes of the Great Tit staying pretty motionless on top of the Blue Tit which was trapped in the corner things started moving again and eventually the Blue Tit escaped. One thing I can't work out though is why the male Blue Tit who was intermittently present on the outside of the nest box didn't go inside to help out it's mate.

Clinging to your instinct for life
A bold favor from the Christian legacy
Come into the garden of delights
Where man has to judge his own behaviour
Conscious to the very fact
A chance meeting with a lone stranger
Casually you lose the day
The law's clear the silent danger
That must be hell this side of heaven
Nothing erodes the sign of redemption
That must be hell this side of heaven
Nothing erodes the sign of redemption
Public courage takes pride in their choice
There's a limit to you men who count the angels
Quietly you seem to suffice
The same train leads to...
That must be hell this side of heaven
Nothing erodes the sign of redemption
That must be hell this side of heaven
Nothing erodes the sign of redemption
That must be hell this side of heaven
Nothing erodes the sign of redemption
