En esta sesión desarrollada en inglés, la trayectoria del pensador estadounidense Fredric Jameson destaca por su permanente evolución intelectual; recorrido que se inicia con su tesis doctoral sobre Jean-Paul Sartre en los años 50, transita más tarde por la crítica dialéctica y la semiótica, hasta situarse como uno de los más notables exponentes teóricos de la postmodernidad, desde una óptica intelectual poliédrica con énfasis en los medios audiovisuales. Ramón del Castillo aborda con él esta reflexión autobiográfica prestando especial atención a su estilo, a su forma de ver y hacer las cosas, y de entender la cultura. Jameson reivindica que la agudeza del intelectual de nuestro tiempo no está en plantear soluciones sino en visualizar los problemas.

Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300)
In this lecture, Professor Paul Fry explores Fredric Jameson's seminal work, The Political Unconscious, as an outcropping of Marxist literary criticism and structural theory. Texts such as Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind" and Shakespeare's seventy-third sonnet are examined in the context of Jameson's three horizons of underlying interpretive frameworks--the political, the social, and the historical, each carefully explained. The extent to which those frameworks permeate individual thought is addressed in a discussion of Jameson's concept of the "ideologeme." The theorist's work is juxtaposed with the writings of Bakhtin and Levi-Strauss. The lecture concludes by revisiting the children's story Tony the Tow Truck, upon which Jameson's theory of literature is mapped.

Fredric Jameson (born 14 April 1934) is an American literary critic and Marxist political theorist. He is best known for his analysis of contemporary cultural trends—he once described postmodernism as the spatialization of culture under the pressure of organized capitalism. Jameson's best-known books include Postmodernism: The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, The Political Unconscious, and Marxism and Form.
Jameson is currently William A. Lane Professor in The Program in Literature and Romance Studies at Duke University. In 2012, the MLA gave Jameson their sixth Award for Lifetime Scholarly Achievement.
Jameson was born in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Haverford College in 1954, where his professors included Wayne Booth, he briefly traveled to Europe, studying at Aix-en-Provence, Munich and Berlin, where he learned of new developments in continental philosophy, including the rise of structuralism. He returned to America the following year to pursue a doctoral degree at Yale University, where he studied under Erich Auerbach.

En esta sesión desarrollada en inglés, la trayectoria del pensador estadounidense Fredric Jameson destaca por su permanente evolución intelectual; recorrido que se inicia con su tesis doctoral sobre Jean-Paul Sartre en los años 50, transita más tarde por la crítica dialéctica y la semiótica, hasta situarse como uno de los más notables exponentes teóricos de la postmodernidad, desde una óptica intelectual poliédrica con énfasis en los medios audiovisuales. Ramón del Castillo aborda con él esta reflexión autobiográfica prestando especial atención a su estilo, a su forma de ver y hacer las cosas, y de entender la cultura. Jameson reivindica que la agudeza del intelectual de nuestro tiempo no está en plantear soluciones sino en visualizar los problemas.

In this lecture, Professor Paul Fry explores Fredric Jameson's seminal work, The Political Unconscious, as an outcropping of Marxist literary criticism and structural theory. Texts such as Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind" and Shakespeare's seventy-third sonnet are examined in the context of Jameson's three horizons of underlying interpretive frameworks--the political, the social, and the historical, each carefully explained. The extent to which those frameworks permeate individual thought is addressed in a discussion of Jameson's concept of the "ideologeme." The theorist's work is juxtaposed with the writings of Bakhtin and Levi-Strauss. The lecture concludes by revisiting the children's story Tony the Tow Truck, upon which Jameson's theory of literature is mapped.
