STORYLINE:
Astronauts installed a porch for experiments on Japan's enormous space station laboratory on Saturday, accomplishing their main objective, despite microphone static that often drowned out the spacewalkers' voices.
Veteran spaceman David Wolf and rookie Timothy Kopra could barely make themselves understood at times because of the loud static emanating from their helmet microphones.
The trouble lasted the entire five and a quarter-hour spacewalk - the first of five planned during Endeavour's space station visit.
NASA officials said it was a nuisance but not a safety issue, and they hoped to resolve the problem before the next spacewalk on Monday.
Indeed, Wolf and Kopra wasted no time 220 miles (354 kilometres) up preparing the Kibo laboaratory - which means 'hope' in Japanese - and the new porch for their mechanical hook-up.
Wolf removed an insulating cover from the lab and threw it overboard.
The spacewalkers then moved on to other routine work at the international space station as their colleagues inside used the shuttle and station robot arms, one at a time, to lift the Japanese porch from Endeavour's payload bay and hoist it toward the Kibo lab.
The spacewalk was over by the time the porch was finally latched into place.
It marked the completion of Japan's one (b) billion US dollar lab, so big that it required three shuttle flights to launch everything.
The first two sections of the lab flew up last year.
The veranda, about 16 feet square (1.5 square metres), will get its first experiments in five days time.
In the end, the two spacewalkers fell behind schedule and had to skip some jobs.
With Apollo 11 on the minds of many back on Earth, NASA noted that Saturday's spacewalk was the 201st by Americans since those first steps on the moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin 40 years ago this Monday.
Remaining inside the linked shuttle and station were 11 astronauts.
The station population swelled to a record 13 when Endeavour arrived on Friday for a one and a quarter-week stay.
Kopra, the station's newest resident, will remain on board for another one and a quarter months.

Ground control from Major Tim: British astronaut tweets for the first time since arriving on the ISS, describing the trip as 'incredible' as stunning pictures emerge of his craft lighting up the night sky
Britain's first official astronaut Major Tim Peake arrived on ISS last night
In his first broadcast, he described the first sunrise as 'spectacular'
He has now posted his first tweet, saying 'Hi from #ISS'
He also credited Yuri Malenchenko for getting the crew safely docked
After a nail-biting journey to the International Space Station (ISS), British astronaut Tim Peake has posted his first tweet from his new home.
He tweeted: 'Hi from #ISS! What an incredible ride to space yesterday-Soyuz felt so smooth & powerful. Yuri did outstanding job getting us safely docked.'
The father-of-two made space history when he entered the station alongside his fellow Expedition 46/47 crew members Yuri Malenchenko and Tim Kopra at 19.58GMT last night.
In a brief, yet monumental broadcast from the ISS last night, Major Peake expressed his joy and awe at joining the current crew on board, declaring it a great first day in the office.
Immediately after entering the station, the crew spoke to their friends and family during which Major Peake said: 'It was a beautiful launch and we got straight into the work. The first sunrise was spectacular. We also got the moon rise which was a pleasure to see.'
He then told his wife Rebecca that he hoped everyone had great launch celebrations and 'enjoyed the show.'
His mother Angela came on the radio and said: 'I think you would call today a spectacular day in the office? Everyone sends their love,' to which he replied: 'I think we had a great day in the office, that's for sure. Love to everybody back home!'
The trio was expected to board the station at 19.25 GMT but following a delay with the docking procedure and Soyuz Commander Malenchenko struggling to open the hatch the team officially arrived at 19.58 GMT.
The current crew, including commander Scott Kelly, Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov were waiting to welcome the new arrivals armed with a camera to document the monumental event.
Once the hatch on the Soyuz and the hatch on the station had been primed, mission control equalised the pressure ready for the crew's arrival.
Mission control tried to hurry along the process by saying the crew was 'waiting impatiently' but when the hatch was finally ready to open, mission control said to Malenchenko: 'Please go ahead and open the hatches. Have a great mission and say hi to the crew from us!'
Second-time astronaut, Nasa's Tim Kopra was first through the hatch, followed by Major Peake and Malenchenko, who is making his sixth flight into space. Kopra was first to take to Twitter too, writing: 'Awesome ride! Thanks to all the great training teams that helped make it happen.'
Since lift-off, Major Peake has also been sent various messages from celebrities, politicians and even the Queen.
Elton John tweeted: 'From one Rocket Man to another, good luck @astro_timepeake with your launch and mission! #Principia #spacerocks'
Following the 'flawless' launch, Prime Minister David Cameron posted a video message to Major Peake.
He said: 'Tim, I know you have been dreaming of this day for a long time and we will be with you for every step of the way, watching with admiration and wonder.
'So on behalf of everyone in Britain let me wish you the very best of luck. You are doing us all proud.'
And in a letter from Her Majesty, the Queen wrote: 'Prince Philip and I are pleased to transmit our best wishes to Major Timothy Peake as he joins the International Space Station in orbit.
'We hope Major Peake's work on the Space Station will serve as an inspiration to a new generation of scientists and engineers.
'The thoughts and prayers of the whole country are with him and the crew, especially at this time of year.
'We join with his friends and family in wishing him a productive mission and safe return to Earth.'
Major Peake, alongside Soyuz Commander Yuri Malenchenko and Nasa's flight engineer Tim Kopra took off at 11.03 GMT from Baikonur, Kazakhstan on board a Soyuz TMA-19 rocket.
The docking of the craft to the ISS was delayed by nine minutes due to a misalignment. Esa has not revealed the details about what caused this misalignment, but the crew was forced to take over the manual controls after losing contact with mission control.
The official Esa twitter handle posted a number of updates during the docking procedure. After initially losing contact, it posted: '#Principia contact and capture confirmed!'

Good luck Tim Peake!

A rocket powering a Soyuz spacecraft has been rolled out and set up on a launch pad in Baikonur. Space veterans, Yuri Malenchenko of Roscosmos and Timothy L. Kopra of NASA, will be joined by ESA astronaut Tim Peak, who will become the first Briton to go to space since 1991.
On Sunday morning, all stages of the rocket carrier were assembled at Baikonur launch pad in Kazakhstan. The rocket is scheduled for lift-off next Thursday at 14.03 Moscow time, from the pad used in 1961 to launch Vostok with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
Russia’s Malenchenko is one of the most experienced cosmonauts – he has spent some 641 days in space during his five flights and even got married during one of his missions. NASA’s Timothy L. Kopra spent a little less than 60 days as a flight engineer of Expedition 20 on the ISS in 2009.
Major Tim Peake is the first British astronaut from the European Space Agency (ESA) and will be making his maiden flight into space on board the Soyuz TMA-19M. He will become the second British astronaut after Helen Sharman’s flight in 1991.
This time the crew can enjoy watching the long-awaited and much-anticipated new episode of the Star Wars saga.
Yuri Malenchenko’s wife, Ekaterina, told RT that her husband likes Star Wars. “Can’t say that he is a really big fan, but he enjoys it,” she said.
It’s Peak’s first space mission and he has brought along collection of music, John King, one of his relatives, told RT. One of the challenges the astronaut faced while preparing for the mission was learning Russian, he added.
The first Brit in space since 1991 didn’t go unnoticed in the Twittersphere. Users all over the world wished him good luck.
The three-man crew will join Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov and NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, who are already on board the International Space Station. Their expedition will last 143 days.

Isteri Yuri Malenchenko-kanak, Ekaterina, memberitahu RT bahawa suaminya suka Star Wars.

Like much of the Soviet-built Baikonur space complex, launch pad No. 1 - or “Gagarin’s start” as it has been known since 1961 - is more about gritty functionality than space-age glamour.
A platform suspended over a vast pit scooped out the steppe, the superstructure bears the weathering of successive punishing winters, and the railway tracks cutting through the concrete surface are worn by dozens of heavy spacecraft and fuel tankers.
