Cucurbita (Latin for gourd) is a genus of herbaceous vine in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, also known as cucurbits, native to the Andes and Mesoamerica. Five species are grown worldwide for their edible fruit, variously known as squash, pumpkin, or gourd depending on species, variety, and local parlance, and for their seeds. First cultivated in the Americas before being brought to Europe by returning explorers after their discovery of the New World, plants in the genus Cucurbita are important sources of human food and oil. Other kinds of gourd, also called bottle-gourds, are native to Africa and belong to the genus Lagenaria, which is in the same family and subfamily as Cucurbita but in a different tribe. These other gourds are used as utensils or vessels, and their young fruits are eaten much like those of Cucurbita species.
Squash may refer to:
In botany, a fruit is the seed-bearing structure in angiosperms formed from the ovary after flowering.
Fruits are the means by which angiosperms disseminate seeds. Edible fruits, in particular, have propagated with the movements of humans and animals in a symbiotic relationship as a means for seed dispersal and nutrition; in fact, humans and many animals have become dependent on fruits as a source of food. Accordingly, fruits account for a substantial fraction of the world's agricultural output, and some (such as the apple and the pomegranate) have acquired extensive cultural and symbolic meanings.
In common language usage, "fruit" normally means the fleshy seed-associated structures of a plant that are sweet or sour, and edible in the raw state, such as apples, bananas, grapes, lemons, oranges, and strawberries. On the other hand, in botanical usage, "fruit" includes many structures that are not commonly called "fruits", such as bean pods, corn kernels, tomatoes, and wheat grains. The section of a fungus that produces spores is also called a fruiting body.

I give a very detailed explanation of male and female flower identification on your squash and zucchini garden plants. The same is true for cucumber flowers. I talk about pollination (a bee even shows up) and why a browning squash is a pollination issue and not a nutritional issue or a disease issue. It just didn't get pollinated. Is that time of year again when we wage a pitched battle with the local fruit fly population.. Was spraying the cucurbits for powdery mildew & noticed a fair few of the spaghetti squash & tomatoes had been struck by the fruit fly.. We're not prepared to lose these crops yet again so made up a small extension to the hoop house to try & protect them from the little pests.. Took less than an hour to knock up & think it will do a good job at keeping them at bay.. Will also be a lot cheaper in the long run & less maintenance that spraying & baiting traps methinks..
