After losing to the Boston Celtics in the Finals the previous year, redemption was the only thing on the minds of the Los Angeles Lakers entering the 1984-85 season. The Lakers cruised to a fourth straight Pacific Division title despite losing Jamaal Wilkes for the season in mid-February because of torn knee ligaments. Los Angeles (62-20) took the division by an NBA-record 20 games. The club, at the height of its "Showtime" era, set two other NBA marks by posting a phenomenal .545 team field-goal percentage and handing out 2,575 assists.
Los Angeles reached the NBA Finals after eliminating Phoenix, Portland, and the Denver Nuggets, chalking up an 11-2 record on the way. Facing Boston again in the championship round, the Lakers were humiliated in the first game, 148-114, a contest remembered as the "Memorial Day Massacre." But Los Angeles bounced back to take four of the next five games, led by 38-year-old series MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The 1985 series marked the ninth time that Los Angeles and Boston had met in the NBA Finals but the first time that the Lakers had come away with the crown.

The 1985 NBA World Championship Series was the championship round of the 1984–85 NBA season.
The Boston Celtics were looking to repeat as NBA Champions for the first time since the 1968–69 season. The Celtics had homecourt advantage for the second year in a row as they finished the regular season with a 63-19 record while the Los Angeles Lakers compiled a 62-20 record. The Lakers looked to bounce back from the previous year's painful loss to the Celtics in the championship series, and were still seeking to beat Boston for the first time ever in NBA Finals history. Also for the first time, the Finals went to a 2-3-2 format with Games 1 and 2 in Boston while the next three games were in Los Angeles. The final two games of the series would be played in Boston, if required. This change of format came after David Stern had a conversation with Celtics legend Red Auerbach in 1984, who didn't like the frequent traveling between games.
In the last game, the Lakers were led by Abdul-Jabbar who scored 29 points as the Lakers defeated the Celtics 111-100. Celtics' forward Kevin McHale scored 32 points in the losing effort. Thanks to Michael Cooper's defense and an injured right hand (which led to Bird's offensive numbers plummeting midway through the postseason, and was later revealed to have been suffered during a fight with a Boston bartender named Mike Harlow), Larry Bird had a mediocre 12-for-29 shooting performance in the final game. It was the first and only time an opposing team would claim an NBA championship in the Boston Garden. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was named MVP of the series, his second Finals MVP award (he also won it in 1971). In the Lakers' four victories, Abdul-Jabbar averaged 30.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 blocks. In one memorable sequence, Abdul-Jabbar grabbed a rebound, drove the length of the court and swished a sky-hook.

The title is a bit misleading because I didn't include any highlights from the '83 and '84 Finals since the Lakers were defeated both times. Instead I chose to focuse on just the championship seasons. This is a video that I've wanted to make for a while now because I felt Magic wasn't getting enough recognition on YouTube. It was also something I wanted to do for younger fans like myself who never got to see legends like Magic when he played and for older fans who might want to relive the good old days. A few things stood out in my mind while editing these games. I knew Magic had led the league in steals for a few years but I had no idea he was such a good team defender. I've often seen people say that his defense was horrible which wasn't the case. Clearly he wasn't a standout individual defender but he was no slouch either. Another thing that stood out to me was the fact that he was so poised in the 1980 Finals despite the fact that he was only 20 years old at the time. From the day he stepped onto an NBA court he was ready to dominate and we saw a glimpse of his potential with that stellar Game 6 performance in Philly. That performance as well as the series' he had against Boston in '87 and Detroit in '88 when he was counted on to score more rank as some of the greatest Finals performances of all-time. It wasn't just the fact that Magic was able to contribute to five championships but that he was so great when it mattered most. The true legends perform well on the biggest stage.
This is what places Magic among the greatest we've ever seen. It's no coincidence that the Lakers were a good team and suddenly turned into an all-time great when he arrived. Magic brought so many things to the table that elevated the play of his teammates. His infectious personality, his great leadership, his competitive drive, the unselfish play and most importantly, taking a backseat to Kareem so the team's chemistry wouldn't take a hit. Over the course of his 13 years in the NBA the Lakers made 9 Finals appearances, never won less than 54 games and won 5 championships in arguably the greatest era in history. So sit back and enjoy the greatest point guard and Laker of all-time at his absolute best.

This was MJ's first truly great NBA game. In just his 9th game as a pro, rookie MJ would take over a game due to necessity and dominate with his athleticism and will. While this became MJ's first 40+ pt game (in his career of 217 40+ games), this really should have been a 55pt game because MJ missed a few easy layups and free throws which were uncharacteristic of him. But throughout the game, his knack for the big play and spectacular drama occurred in the most crucial moments. With phenomenal moves, hang-time jumpers and an innate ability to create, young MJ took over the league by storm and this was the beginning.

Kobe Bean Bryant (born August 23, 1978) is an American professional basketball player who plays shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bryant enjoyed a successful high school basketball career at Lower Merion High School, where he was recognized as the top high school basketball player in the country. LeBron Raymone James (/ləˈbrɒn/; born December 30, 1984) is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The title is a bit misleading because I didn't include any highlights from the '83 and '84 Finals since the Lakers were defeated both times. Instead I chose to focuse on just the championship seasons. This is a video that I've wanted to make for a while now because I felt Magic wasn't getting enough recognition on YouTube. It was also something I wanted to do for younger fans like myself who never got to see legends like Magic when he played and for older fans who might want to relive the good old days. A few things stood out in my mind while editing these games. I knew Magic had led the league in steals for a few years but I had no idea he was such a good team defender. I've often seen people say that his defense was horrible which wasn't the case. Clearly he wasn't a standout individual defender but he was no slouch either. Another thing that stood out to me was the fact that he was so poised in the 1980 Finals despite the fact that he was only 20 years old at the time. From the day he stepped onto an NBA court he was ready to dominate and we saw a glimpse of his potential with that stellar Game 6 performance in Philly. That performance as well as the series' he had against Boston in '87 and Detroit in '88 when he was counted on to score more rank as some of the greatest Finals performances of all-time. It wasn't just the fact that Magic was able to contribute to five championships but that he was so great when it mattered most. The true legends perform well on the biggest stage. This is what places Magic among the greatest we've ever seen. It's no coincidence that the Lakers were a good team and suddenly turned into an all-time great when he arrived. Magic brought so many things to the table that elevated the play of his teammates. His infectious personality, his great leadership, his competitive drive, the unselfish play and most importantly, taking a backseat to Kareem so the team's chemistry wouldn't take a hit. Over the course of his 13 years in the NBA the Lakers made 9 Finals appearances, never won less than 54 games and won 5 championships in arguably the greatest era in history. So sit back and enjoy the greatest point guard and Laker of all-time at his absolute best. This was MJ's first truly great NBA game. In just his 9th game as a pro, rookie MJ would take over a game due to necessity and dominate with his athleticism and will. While this became MJ's first 40+ pt game (in his career of 217 40+ games), this really should have been a 55pt game because MJ missed a few easy layups and free throws which were uncharacteristic of him. But throughout the game, his knack for the big play and spectacular drama occurred in the most crucial moments. With phenomenal moves, hang-time jumpers and an innate ability to create, young MJ took over the league by storm and this was the beginning. -

In this twelve-year span, Kevin Garnett received $28,000,000, which was the highest salary payment of any NBA player, during the 2003--2004 season. The salary cap is determined during the offseason, but as stated earlier, it is liable to change. An exception is necessary to sign a player for a contract that would exceed the salary cap threshold of the "soft cap". The Larry Bird exception, more commonly known as Bird Rights, allows teams to re-sign a current player only if he has played for that particular team for a minimum of three years. Another exception known as the mid-level exception allows for teams that are over the salary cap to sign one or more players as long as they do not exceed the total amount of the average NBA salary. 1984-85 Los Angeles Lakers: Return To Glory Part 1/6
After losing to the Boston Celtics in the Finals the previous year, redemption was the only thing on the minds of the Los Angeles Lakers entering the 1984-85 season. The Lakers cruised to a fourth straight Pacific Division title despite losing Jamaal Wilkes for the season in mid-February because of torn knee ligaments. Los Angeles (62-20) took the division by an NBA-record 20 games. The club, at the height of its "Showtime" era, set two other NBA marks by posting a phenomenal .545 team field-goal percentage and handing out 2,575 assists. Magic Johnson: NBA Finals Highlights (1980-88)
The title is a bit misleading because I didn't include any highlights from the '83 and '84 Finals since the Lakers were defeated both times. Instead I chose to focuse on just the championship seasons. This is a video that I've wanted to make for a while now because I felt Magic wasn't getting enough recognition on YouTube. It was also something I wanted to do for younger fans like myself who never got to see legends like Magic when he played and for older fans who might want to relive the good old days. This was MJ's first truly great NBA game. In just his 9th game as a pro, rookie MJ would take over a game due to necessity and dominate with his athleticism and will. Also for the first time, the Finals went to a 2-3-2 format with Games 1 and 2 in Boston while the next three games were in Los Angeles. The final two games of the series would be played in Boston, if required. This change of format came after David Stern had a conversation with Celtics legend Red Auerbach in 1984, who didn't like the frequent traveling between games.
In the last game, the Lakers were led by Abdul-Jabbar who scored 29 points as the Lakers defeated the Celtics 111-100. Celtics' forward Kevin McHale scored 32 points in the losing effort. Thanks to Michael Cooper's defense and an injured right hand (which led to Bird's offensive numbers plummeting midway through the postseason, and was later revealed to have been suffered during a fight with a Boston bartender named Mike Harlow), Larry Bird had a mediocre 12-for-29 shooting performance in the final game. It was the first and only time an opposing team would claim an NBA championship in the Boston Garden. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was named MVP of the series, his second Finals MVP award (he also won it in 1971). In the Lakers' four victories, Abdul-Jabbar averaged 30.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 blocks. In one memorable sequence, Abdul-Jabbar grabbed a rebound, drove the length of the court and swished a sky-hook.

It was also something I wanted to do for younger fans like myself who never got to see legends like Magic when he played and for older fans who might want to relive the good old days. A few things stood out in my mind while editing these games. I knew Magic had led the league in steals for a few years but I had no idea he was such a good team defender. I've often seen people say that his defense was horrible which wasn't the case. Clearly he wasn't a standout individual defender but he was no slouch either. Another thing that stood out to me was the fact that he was so poised in the 1980 Finals despite the fact that he was only 20 years old at the time. From the day he stepped onto an NBA court he was ready to dominate and we saw a glimpse of his potential with that stellar Game 6 performance in Philly. That performance as well as the series' he had against Boston in '87 and Detroit in '88 when he was counted on to score more rank as some of the greatest Finals performances of all-time. It wasn't just the fact that Magic was able to contribute to five championships but that he was so great when it mattered most. The true legends perform well on the biggest stage.
This is what places Magic among the greatest we've ever seen. It's no coincidence that the Lakers were a good team and suddenly turned into an all-time great when he arrived. Magic brought so many things to the table that elevated the play of his teammates. His infectious personality, his great leadership, his competitive drive, the unselfish play and most importantly, taking a backseat to Kareem so the team's chemistry wouldn't take a hit. Over the course of his 13 years in the NBA the Lakers made 9 Finals appearances, never won less than 54 games and won 5 championships in arguably the greatest era in history. So sit back and enjoy the greatest point guard and Laker of all-time at his absolute best.

While this became MJ's first 40+ pt game (in his career of 217 40+ games), this really should have been a 55pt game because MJ missed a few easy layups and free throws which were uncharacteristic of him. But throughout the game, his knack for the big play and spectacular drama occurred in the most crucial moments. With phenomenal moves, hang-time jumpers and an innate ability to create, young MJ took over the league by storm and this was the beginning.

Garnett has been the highest-paid NBA player per year in seven of the past twelve NBA seasons. Michael Jordan is the only NBA player to sign a contract worth over thirty million dollars in a season. During the 1997--1998 season, Jordan earned $33,000,000. Kobe Bryant will join Jordan as the only two players to reach this milestone when the 2013-2014 season begins.
Beginning in the 1984--85 NBA season, the NBA's first salary cap was introduced. The NBA salary cap is the maximum dollar amount each NBA team can spend on its players for the season. However, the NBA uses a "soft" salary cap, which means that significant "salary exceptions" allow NBA teams to exceed their allotted amount in order to sign players. The salary cap is determined during the offseason, but as stated earlier, it is liable to change.

The story of Michael Ray Richardson is one of the greatest tragedies in NBA history, it's also one of the most controversial topics in the history of the NBA.
Richardson starred at the University of Montana from 74 until 78 where he got the grizzlies into the tournament and got them ranked twice and set a than school record with 21 wins in 1975.
After four years at Montana Richardson went pro and was the 4th overall pick of the 1978 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. His rookie season with the Knicks was anything but spectacular. Richardson served primarily as a back up and averaged just 16 minutes a game.
He exploded his second year as his minutes jumped 37 a game and his points to 15 a game. He also became the first player in NBA history to lead the league in both assists and steals.
He became a key member of the Knicks in the late 70s but was given to the Golden State Warriors as compensation for the Knicks signing Bernard King. He played just 33 games with the Warriors before being traded to the Nets.
Richardson would go on to star for the Nets but he also acquired a cocaine habit. Richardson would miss several games due to rehab issues and even a few because he was too high to play.
In 1984-85 he had arguably the best season of his career averaging a career high 20 points, and 3 steals a game while making the all-star team for the 4th time. This was a controversial selection because it left out Bulls rookie Michael Jordan.
The following season Richardson had his 3rd positive test for cocaine and NBA commissioner David Stern banned Richardson for life. Richardson complains about the suspension saying it was a double standard as Warriors forward Chris Mullin had a well publicized battle with alcohol bad no action was ever taken against him. Richardson claims he was singled out because he was black and Mullin was white. He also points to the fact that the three players who were banned for life, himself, Jazz guard John Drew, and Rockets guard Mitchell Wiggins are all black. He was reinstated instated in 1988 but failed two more tests, which he disputes.
Following his ban he played several years in Europe and the CBA He has twice been named head coaches of CBA teams but created a huge controversy in 2007 while head coach of the Albany Patroons when he made anti-Semitic remarks. He now coached the Oklahoma Calvary who have since moved to the PBL.
