Carers often work under the client's direct supervision, and are responsible for assisting them with their day-to-day needs. Additionally, they assist, enable, maintain and look after the general well-being of elderly and disabled people within the community.
According to the assessed needs of the individual, the carer must assist him or her with their dignity and independence, and provide support when needed. It is of utmost importance for carers to respect clients' confidentiality at all times, and to work in compliance with the company's quality assurance guidelines.
The responsibilities of carers can range widely, but they are all undertaken to help improve clients' quality of life. Common tasks may involve assisting clients with personal care needs (including toileting, bathing, or other personal hygiene needs), food preparation and planning, hydration and nutrition, walking and transportation and monitoring and reporting changes in clients' needs.
Although carers are often not required to have an advanced degree, there are important skills that they must have in order to perform the job tasks adequately. Having the right skills helps to ensure that clients receive the help they need to maintain independence.
