The Parramatta area is located in the metropolitan area of Sydney New South Wales, about 23 kilometers west of Sydney. It is a major transport interchange for Sydney's west because it has a ferry service as well as buses and trains.
Indigenous people lived in this area before the European settlement and people say that its name "Parramatta" is an aboriginal word that means 'Place where eels lie down'. The Parramatta area tends to be warm and hot in the summer months and gets fairly cold in winter.
There are a range of suburbs that in the Parramatta area including Baulkham Hills, Carlingford, Granville, Toongabbie and Merrylands. It is a very multicultural area with its top speaking languages being English, Lebanese, Chinese and New Zealander.
Parramatta's predominant features are its historic colonial buildings, Rosehill Gardens Raceway, magnificent restaurants and Parramatta Westfield's, a shopping paradise.
Belmore Park which is located in North Parramatta contains an oval who was named after one of Australia's most famous cricketers who grew up in the area.
