The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney is a metropolitan area to the east and south-east of the Sydney CBD. It extends from the peninsula of South Head at Watsons Bay in the north to South Coogee in the south and includes suburbs such as Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick, Bondi and Coogee.
According to the 2011 Census, the thriving region's population was 249,546, which was up from 230,757 in 2006.
The northern parts feature winding crescent-like streets, harbourside beaches with large homes and and villages.
In the south, the landscape is characterized by modern homes, a traditional 'middle-class' suburban feel and with ocean beaches.
The western areas, those closed to the Sydney CBD, contain areas with large numbers of overhanging trees, cafes and modern pubs and bars.
Some of Sydney's most well-known beaches are in the Eastern Suburbs and Bondi Beach, Bronte Beach, and Coogee Beach. The University of New South Wales is one of Australia's leading universities, and is located in Kensington.
Cultural and tourist activities abound and include the Bondi Markets, the 6km Bondi to Coogee Walk, and the Eastern Beaches Tour, which takes in shipwrecks, old lighthouses and military fortifications.
