Mike and Kelsey designed Four Omens of the Tu'i Tonga for a design contest held February 2015 by DFW Nerd Night. We were given components from which a new game was to be designed in a few weeks time. This video is the How To Play video submitted for the contest.

The lakalaka is a dance form that accompanies poetry. The arm movements are graceful and intricate, deriving their distinctive character from the rotation of the lower arm.
The men do one set of virile movements while the women do another set of very graceful movements.The movements dramatize the poetry.
The high ranking dancers are the vahenga (male and female) in the middle of the front row, usually being members or descendants of the Royal Family or the Lord of the town.
The Tu'i Kanokupolu,who is currently His Majesty King George Tupou V, is the sovereign of Tonga and traditionally, his seat is in the village of Kanokupolu, in the western part of Tongatapu, from which hail the performers of this dance.
Well known as the Fola'osi, a reference to their tapa costume, the lyrics of this lakalaka is titled "Fasi 'ae Ngalu" and were composed by Her Late Majesty Queen Salote Tupou III, which describe the origin of Ngata, the first Tu'i Kanokupolu line of Kings.
The vahenga is HRH Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Halaevalu Mata'aho Napua-o-ka-Lani Tuku'aho & the Hon. Siosifa.

Lot, Kamehameha V, wanted a gift of music for his people and asked Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany to send a bandmaster to Hawaiʻi. Henri Berger arrived June 5, 1872, and organized the Royal Hawaiian band who perfomed June 11,1872, after 5 days of practice. This first performance of the Royal Hawaiian band introduced "Hymn to Kamehameha I "which Berger re-wrote for the first celebration of King Kamehameha Day. The melody was based on the Prussian hymn originally titled "Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz". The words by King David Kalākaua was set to the Hymn to Kamehameha I in 1874, and was first sung by the Kawaiahaʻo Church Choir, on King Kalākaua`s birthday, Nov. 16, 1874. The King made a state visit to Japan on March 4, 1881, and was received lavishly by Emperor Mutsuhito. Landing at the Bay of Yeddo, Yokohama, he was greeted by a Japanese military band playing his song. During the visit, Kalākaua proposed the marriage of his niece, 5-year-old Princess Kaʻiulani to Prince Yamashina Komatsu Sadamoro, the 15-year-old nephew of the emperor. The emperor replied that the prince was already betrothed. Upon Kalākaua's return to Hawaiʻi, he received formal letters from Foreign Minister Inouye Kaoru and Prince Komatsu politely declining the offer of marriage to the Hawaiian princess. Thirteen years later, Jan. 29, 1894, Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote to Princess Kaʻiulani asking the princess to marry and choose a suitable mate from Prince David Kawananakoa, Prince Jonah Kūhiō or Prince Komatsu, the Japanese Prince. In a letter to the Queen, June 22, 1894, Princess Kaʻiulani rejected all three princes writing "I feel it would be wrong if I married a man I did not love. I should be perfectly unhappy, and we should not agree and instead of being an example to the married women of today, I should become like them, merely a woman of fashion and most likely to flirt". The Hawaiʻi legislature proclaimed Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi the state anthem in 1967.

Tonga ([ˈtoŋa]; Tongan: Puleʻanga Fakatuʻi ʻo Tonga), officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 177 islands of which 52 islands are inhabited. The total surface area is about 750 square kilometres (290 sq mi) scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. It has a population 103,000 people of whom 70% reside on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga stretches over about 800 kilometres (500 mi) in a north-south line – about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii. It is surrounded by Fiji and Wallis and Futuna (France) to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec (part of New Zealand) to the southwest, and New Caledonia (France) and Vanuatu to the farther west.
Tonga became known as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan.

The lakalaka is a dance form that accompanies poetry. The arm movements are graceful and intricate, deriving their distinctive character from the rotation of the lower arm.
The men do one set of virile movements while the women do another set of very graceful movements.The movements dramatize the poetry.
The high ranking dancers are the vahenga (male and female) in the middle of the front row, usually being members or descendants of the Royal Family or the Lord of the town.
The Tu'i Kanokupolu,who is currently His Majesty King George Tupou V, is the sovereign of Tonga and traditionally, his seat is in the village of Kanokupolu, in the western part of Tongatapu, from which hail the performers of this dance.
Well known as the Fola'osi, a reference to their tapa costume, the lyrics of this lakalaka is titled "Fasi 'ae Ngalu" and were composed by Her Late Majesty Queen Salote Tupou III, which describe the origin of Ngata, the first Tu'i Kanokupolu line of Kings.

Lot, Kamehameha V, wanted a gift of music for his people and asked Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany to send a bandmaster to Hawaiʻi. Henri Berger arrived June 5, 1872, and organized the Royal Hawaiian band who perfomed June 11,1872, after 5 days of practice. This first performance of the Royal Hawaiian band introduced "Hymn to Kamehameha I "which Berger re-wrote for the first celebration of King Kamehameha Day. The melody was based on the Prussian hymn originally titled "Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz". The words by King David Kalākaua was set to the Hymn to Kamehameha I in 1874, and was first sung by the Kawaiahaʻo Church Choir, on King Kalākaua`s birthday, Nov. 16, 1874. The King made a state visit to Japan on March 4, 1881, and was received lavishly by Emperor Mutsuhito. Landing at the Bay of Yeddo, Yokohama, he was greeted by a Japanese military band playing his song. During the visit, Kalākaua proposed the marriage of his niece, 5-year-old Princess Kaʻiulani to Prince Yamashina Komatsu Sadamoro, the 15-year-old nephew of the emperor. The emperor replied that the prince was already betrothed. Upon Kalākaua's return to Hawaiʻi, he received formal letters from Foreign Minister Inouye Kaoru and Prince Komatsu politely declining the offer of marriage to the Hawaiian princess. Thirteen years later, Jan. 29, 1894, Queen Liliʻuokalani wrote to Princess Kaʻiulani asking the princess to marry and choose a suitable mate from Prince David Kawananakoa, Prince Jonah Kūhiō or Prince Komatsu, the Japanese Prince. In a letter to the Queen, June 22, 1894, Princess Kaʻiulani rejected all three princes writing "I feel it would be wrong if I married a man I did not love. I should be perfectly unhappy, and we should not agree and instead of being an example to the married women of today, I should become like them, merely a woman of fashion and most likely to flirt". The Hawaiʻi legislature proclaimed Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi the state anthem in 1967.

Tongatapu Island is very flat and ideal for exploring by bike. There are cycle rentals in Nuku'alofa and some guesthouses also provide bikes for their guests to rent.
Day Trips to Offshore Island Resorts
There are daily excursions from Nuku'alofa to the offshore islands, where you can relax on the island’s beautiful beaches, join in the daily activities then return later in the day. The islands are very close – it is only a 15 minute trip to Pangaimotu (the nearest), and less than an hour to Royal Sunset (the farthest). There are bars and restaurants available.
Diving & Game Fishing
There is superb diving in the islands north of Nuku'alofa. Two game-fishing charter companies also operate out of Nuku'alofa - Royal Sunset Fishing and Dive Tours and Blue Water Fishing Charters. The fishing grounds are off the northern coast of Tongatapu Island.
Heilala Festival
A week-long celebration coinciding with the King's Birthday in July, and featuring parades, workshops, a beauty pageant, music arts, feasting and sports competitions.
Island Tours
Several companies offer tours around the island and the Tongan National Centre also has a cultural tour and lunch (bookings essential).
Royal Palace
Surrounded by large lawns and giant Norfolk pines, Tonga's famous Royal Palace dominates the seafront. This large Victorian timber building was prefabricated in New Preparing Food the Traditional Way © Tonga Visitors BureauZealand and completed in 1882, when the upstairs verandah was added. The palace is not open to the public but there is a good view from the waterfront on the west side.
Royal Tombs
Tongan sovereigns, their wives, husbands and close relatives have been buried at the tombs at the Mala'ekula (a large park area) since 1893. It's not open to the public but there is a reasonable view from the fence.
Sailing
Nuku'alofa is a hub for international yachts, particularly from March to October. Faua Harbour has basic facilities but there are more extensive facilities at the Nuku'alofa Yacht & Motor Club, where visiting yachties are welcome.
Snorkelling
Yellow Pier (at the end of Tupoulahi Road) is a good spot for swimming and snorkelling, with lots of small fish and the occasional ray.
Talamahu Market
Tonga’s largest fruit, vegetable and handicraft market is open everyday except Sunday, with an abundance of local foods and inexpensive handcrafts. The market is a hub of activity, particularly on Saturday mornings, and the perfect place to meet the locals. Colourful local produce for sale includes papaya, mango, sweet potatoes, taro, yams Traditional Tongan Carving Tonga Visitors Bureauand plantains.

The islands are very close – it is only a 15 minute trip to Pangaimotu (the nearest), and less than an hour to Royal Sunset (the farthest). There are bars and restaurants available.
Diving & Game Fishing
There is superb diving in the islands north of Nuku'alofa. Two game-fishing charter companies also operate out of Nuku'alofa - Royal Sunset Fishing and Dive Tours and Blue Water Fishing Charters. The fishing grounds are off the northern coast of Tongatapu Island.
Heilala Festival
A week-long celebration coinciding with the King's Birthday in July, and featuring parades, workshops, a beauty pageant, music arts, feasting and sports competitions.
Island Tours
Several companies offer tours around the island and the Tongan National Centre also has a cultural tour and lunch (bookings essential).
Royal Palace
Surrounded by large lawns and giant Norfolk pines, Tonga's famous Royal Palace dominates the seafront. This large Victorian timber building was prefabricated in New Preparing Food the Traditional Way © Tonga Visitors BureauZealand and completed in 1882, when the upstairs verandah was added. The palace is not open to the public but there is a good view from the waterfront on the west side.
Royal Tombs
Tongan sovereigns, their wives, husbands and close relatives have been buried at the tombs at the Mala'ekula (a large park area) since 1893. It's not open to the public but there is a reasonable view from the fence.
Sailing
Nuku'alofa is a hub for international yachts, particularly from March to October. Faua Harbour has basic facilities but there are more extensive facilities at the Nuku'alofa Yacht & Motor Club, where visiting yachties are welcome.
Snorkelling
Yellow Pier (at the end of Tupoulahi Road) is a good spot for swimming and snorkelling, with lots of small fish and the occasional ray.
Talamahu Market
Tonga’s largest fruit, vegetable and handicraft market is open everyday except Sunday, with an abundance of local foods and inexpensive handcrafts. The market is a hub of activity, particularly on Saturday mornings, and the perfect place to meet the locals. Colourful local produce for sale includes papaya, mango, sweet potatoes, taro, yams Traditional Tongan Carving Tonga Visitors Bureauand plantains.

Hello Lovelies,
I've been away for a while but here is a treat for you until I am back in the states!!! This is only episode 1 of my trip to Tonga. It's been a GREAT experience coming back to my homeland and seeing the house I grew up in to the school that I attended.
Everything here seems to be the way that I remember even the faces of the ones I love. They seem to never really age here as if I'm stepping into a time machine. I've enjoyed visiting our plantation that I used to run around freely in with my siblings. Swinging on vines pretending to be 'George of the Jungle' to feeding the pigs that we would later kill and eat. HAHAHA. These were the days! Days without social media, days where we didn't really talk back to our parents, days where we all lived in the same house... Now, we are all grown up but it was sooo good to come and relive some of those memories.
From rollerblading in the rain with my siblings, eating the same food EVERY Sunday (UMU), making home videos, spending a lot of time with family, having family prayers every night before bed and so much more. All the things that cost absolutely nothing - THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE!
Don't take things for granted and learn to be thankful each and EVERYDAY!
Wake up each morning and write down a few things that you are thankful for. Focus on the positive...

2,400 kilometers northeast of New Zealand and a part of the triangle formed by the Kingdom of Tonga to the west, the Samoa's to the north and the Cook Islands to the east, sits Niue Island.
Niu ē translates to mean "Behold the coconut" but the land has been known by a few names in her time; Like the one Captain James Cook coined in 1774, "Savage Island".
Legend has it; the natives that "greeted" him were painted in what appeared to Cook and his crew to be blood. It turns out that the suspicious substance on their teeth was from the harmless hulahula, a native red banana- But Cook wasn't so keen to stick around and find that out- so the name "Savage Island " stuck for a couple of centuries.
Niue is also affectionately known as "The Rock of Polynesia" due to the fact that it's one of the world's largest coral Islands. The landscape is made up of steep limestone cliffs that rise out of the ocean to impressive heights of up to 60 meters.
