Gish is the debut album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released in May 1991 through Caroline Records. Frontman Billy Corgan described Gish as a "very spiritual album".
Despite initially peaking at only number 195 on the Billboard 200 upon its release, Gish was eventually certified platinum (one million copies shipped) by the RIAA.
Gish was recorded from December 1990 to March 1991 in Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin with a budget of $20,000. Vig and Billy Corgan worked together as co-producers. The longer recording period and larger budget were unprecedented for Vig, who later remembered,
The inclusion of a massive production style reminiscent of ELO and Queen was unusual for an independent band at the time. Whereas many albums at the time used drum sampling and processing, Gish used unprocessed drum recordings, and an exacting, unique guitar sound. Billy Corgan also performed nearly all of the guitar and bass parts on the record, which was confirmed by Vig in a later interview.
The Smashing Pumpkins (alternately known as simply Smashing Pumpkins) is an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1988. Formed by frontman Billy Corgan (lead vocals, guitar) and James Iha (guitar), the band included D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums) in its original incarnation. It has undergone many line-up changes over the course of its existence, with the current lineup including Corgan, rhythm guitarist Jeff Schroeder and Chamberlin.
Disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegazing, and electronica in later recordings. Corgan is the group's primary songwriter—his grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's albums and songs, which have been described as "anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land".

Conrad McKellar, a troubled student, joins the Columbia newspaper much to the dismay of the beautiful, yet icy news editor and is given an assignment to cover The OC Club, the group that Johnny's club is posing as. Meanwhile, Paul Crane draws the ire of a local fraternity and seeks revenge by asking a local criminal Biscuit for 'protection'. However, Biscuit and the Club he belongs to will need something from him.

Plot: A famous author encourages his young writing students to live and write on the edge, leading to a blurring of the boundaries between fact, fiction and sanity. Celebrated author Ezra Rosen stages a comeback after a long respite by teaching what is supposed to be an on-line writing workshop. Instead he hosts the classes at his home seeking to revitalize himself and his storytelling by seducing his young students into a cult of writing and living dangerously. Rosen wastes no time preying upon the students' vulnerabilities via his unorthodox, dogmatic approach to teaching writing. While his past achievements and charisma beguile two students in particular, it doesn't take long for most to see that the great writer has lost the plot. Before long some of the students' stories generate a meta-narrative and wrestle control from their teacher. In losing his hold on his characters and the narrative, Rosen also loses what little hold on sanity he still possesses. Yet he somehow finishes his latest novel, suggesting that perhaps there was a method to his madness.

Smiley, where have you been?
Smiley, it's such a sin to say
You'll dream your life away
No one met him, couldn't make it on a bended knee
All his friends were simple prophets only if he please
And he'll wait on his knee
Smiley, where have you been?
Smiley, it's such a sin to say
You'll dream your life away
Your love won't change
Come back to stay
Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley
Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley
And you-
if I'm smilin'
Then I'm tryin'
'cause I'm smilin'
