SWAT, "Special Weapons and Tactics Team", is an elite paramilitary Special Operations tactical unit of the police department, first established in America.
The SWAT team is trained to perform high-risk operations including hostage rescues and counter-terrorism, serving to protect their designated location from heavily-armed criminals with an expertise beyond the capabilities of regular officers. Not only do they receive high-quality training, but are also equipped with specialized firearms including submachine guns and grenades.
SWAT was first established in the Los Angeles Police Department in the late 60s, and since then, Officer Charles Joh has made his mark as the first Korean American officer to have joined and currently serve, in this elite force.
Officer Joh has served in LAPD since 1996, a veteran with 14 years of experience in the field. In an effort to join the SWAT Team since 2003, Officer Joh trained vigorously and served in various departments such as the Metro Transit Police team and the Mounted Police Department to increase his experience level. And finally, in March of 2008, he became a member of the SWAT team.
He is now a respected member of LAPD's SWAT, being part of SWAT's Scuba Team for maritime operations as well as serving as a leader for many trainings, including marksmanship, roping, and defense tactics. As a proud Korean, he has even taught his fellow SWAT officers TaeKwonDo, as means of cultural exchange.
A father of two sons, a loving husband, and a proud son to his parents. But when he's on duty, he is Officer Charles Joh, ready to put his full energy towards serving and protecting his community. Let the action begin!

Four black male teenagers (14 - 15) with no criminal record and committing no crime at all, were stopped by the Los Angeles Police Department as they crossed the street on their walk towards the store.
They were all stopped, handcuffed for 24 minutes, asked if they were gang members, and asked about their identifying information.
After their information was collected, the 4 teens had their handcuffs removed and released.
"When a young non-white male is stopped and searched at the whim of a police officer, his idea of personal space, privacy and self esteem are shattered, to say nothing of his Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment protections. The damage goes deep quickly and stays. Stop & frisk, as well as a tactic, is also an incitement. Not the best thing to engender good conduct and safer communities.
The person stopped is forever criminalized. This is not a preventative measure. It is an exercise in humiliation and emasculation. It works. Fear and resentment of law enforcement is often the result and perhaps the goal (again: the investment). To cleave a certain demographic off from the rest, isolate them, make them understand they are "other" and make that stick -- this is a huge part of stop & frisk. The damage done is irreparable. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officially the City of Los Angeles Police Department, is the law enforcement agency of Los Angeles, California. With 9,843 officers and 2,773 civilian staff, it is the third-largest municipal police department in the United States, after the New York City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department. The department serves an area of 498 square miles (1,290 km2) and a population of 3,884,307 people.
The LAPD has been fictionalized in numerous movies, novels and television shows throughout its history. The department has also been associated with a number of controversies, mainly concerned with racism, police brutality, and police corruption.
History
The first specific Los Angeles police force was founded in 1853 as the Los Angeles Rangers, a volunteer force that assisted the existing County forces. The Rangers were soon succeeded by the Los Angeles City Guards, another volunteer group. Neither force was particularly efficient and Los Angeles became known for its violence, gambling and vice.

Officer Joh has served in LAPD since 1996, a veteran with 14 years of experience in the field. In an effort to join the SWAT Team since 2003, Officer Joh trained vigorously and served in various departments such as the Metro Transit Police team and the Mounted Police Department to increase his experience level. And finally, in March of 2008, he became a member of the SWAT team.
He is now a respected member of LAPD's SWAT, being part of SWAT's Scuba Team for maritime operations as well as serving as a leader for many trainings, including marksmanship, roping, and defense tactics. As a proud Korean, he has even taught his fellow SWAT officers TaeKwonDo, as means of cultural exchange.
A father of two sons, a loving husband, and a proud son to his parents. But when he's on duty, he is Officer Charles Joh, ready to put his full energy towards serving and protecting his community. Let the action begin!

The person stopped is forever criminalized. This is not a preventative measure. It is an exercise in humiliation and emasculation. It works. Fear and resentment of law enforcement is often the result and perhaps the goal (again: the investment). Four black male teenagers (14 - 15) with no criminal record and committing no crime at all, were stopped by the Los Angeles Police Department as they crossed the street on their walk towards the store.
They were all stopped, handcuffed for 24 minutes, asked if they were gang members, and asked about their identifying information.
After their information was collected, the 4 teens had their handcuffs removed and released.
"When a young non-white male is stopped and searched at the whim of a police officer, his idea of personal space, privacy and self esteem are shattered, to say nothing of his Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment protections. The damage goes deep quickly and stays. Stop & frisk, as well as a tactic, is also an incitement. Not the best thing to engender good conduct and safer communities.
The person stopped is forever criminalized. This is not a preventative measure. It is an exercise in humiliation and emasculation. It works. Fear and resentment of law enforcement is often the result and perhaps the goal (again: the investment). At weekends, those who want to see but, above all, be seen, make for Venice Beach. The sandy beach is relaxing and its many pavements are popular with joggers and roller skaters alike. Even by Los Angeles standards, the performers on Muscle Beach are quite outrageous and while some body-builders lift thousands of kilos, others shamelessly display their supreme egos by strutting like conceited peacocks!

The driver was killed in the shooting, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators said Monday morning that the bizarre sequence of events began late Sunday in West Covina when a man, who had earlier requested police assistance, was given a ride in the West Covina patrol car. The man somehow commandeered the vehicle, according to the sheriff's department.
It was not immediately clear why the man requested police, but investigators said the man made "peculiar" statements.
Authorities began pursuing the stolen police cruiser in the West Covina area Sunday at 9:45 p.m. The driver hit speeds in excess of 100 mph, as well as drove on the wrong side of the road, weaving on and off freeways.
The pursuit came to a dramatic end at Jackson and Colorado Streets in Glendale as the driver pulled into an alley. Officers rammed the car in an attempt to get the driver, about 45 years old, wedged up against a trash bin.
The driver hit reverse and sped backward through they alley before officers wedged the cruiser with their patrol units. The driver hit the gas, and the tires began smoking as they burned rubber.
Officers approached the cruiser with guns drawn at 10:45 p.m., an hour after the chase started, and opened fire. Police weapons were still in the patrol vehicle, but it was not immediately clear whether the man used them, investigators said.
No officers were hurt in the shooting, the LA County Sheriff's Department said.
Police did not reveal how the cruiser was stolen.

A female carjacking pursuit suspect led officers on a high-speed chase, jumping curbs and speeding through residential areas, before she attempted to jump into the driver's side of a police cruiser at the end of the chase. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Saturday identified the suspect shot and wounded during a gun battle with deputies the previous day.
Hector Javier Puga, 26, remained hospitalized in fair condition, the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
Puga had allegedly pointed a gun at deputies before being shot following a dangerous pursuit through South Los Angeles residential streets late Friday afternoon.
After being hit in the upper torso by gunfire, Puga walked toward a nearby residence and collapsed on the front porch, his white-T-shirt stained with blood, aerial video showed.
About an hour later, he surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the release.
The Sheriff’s Department later said that Puga had been wanted in connection with a March 8 kidnapping in which he was accused of forcing his wife into a vehicle at gunpoint in the city of Paramount, officials said.
The woman managed to escape after he stopped at her’s mother’s house so she could use the bathroom, according to the release.
Deputies saw Puga’s vehicle Friday and began pursuing him after he failed to stop, the release stated.
An investigation into the incident was ongoing, the department said.

A female carjacking pursuit suspect led officers on a high-speed chase, jumping curbs and speeding through residential areas, before she attempted to jump into the driver's side of a police cruiser at the end of the chase.
The carjacking victim was speaking out Sunday after the bizarre pursuit.
"I was in the house maybe 15-20 seconds when I heard the car start," Christy Adair said.
Adair said her car was taken right from her driveway.
"I ran outside and I saw a woman backing my truck out of the driveway and I had a bag in my hand and I threw the bag at her," Adair said. "She put it in drive towards me very fast, so I got out of the way. I just was screaming at her to stop."
Adair called 911 and then started tracking her truck's location with the "Find my iPhone" app, as she left her phone in the truck.
Police began pursuing the woman in Adair's brown truck around 6 p.m. in the Simi Valley area on Easter Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The driver sped through a grassy area on the freeway as well as on the shoulder before exiting to residential streets in the Canoga Park area.
LAPD officers rammed the truck with their cruisers in order to get the woman to stop.
The truck spun out before the woman exited the driver's side.
As she tip-toed slowly toward officers, she suddenly sprang toward the driver's side of a police cruiser and nearly made it into the cab before officers converged upon her and slammed her to the ground.
The driver was loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance following the pursuit end.
No injuries were reported in the initial carjacking, police said.

Initial reports indicated that the suspect was last seen going into a nearby home, and officers establish two perimeters, essentially locking down the entire Nickerson Gardens area. The outer perimeter extended from Imperial Highway, north to East 108th Street; and Compton Avenue, west to South Central Avenue. The inner perimeter remained primarily focused on the immediate area where the suspect was last seen, including the home where the suspect was possibly still inside hiding.
The downed officer is transported by LAFD paramedics to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, in Long Beach, CA. Fortunately for the officer, the bullet wound was isolated to his arm and he was later released and is expected to make a full and complete recovery.
The search for the third suspect continues.
