Should Sullenberger have tried to turn back to LGA?
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 (AWE1549), an Airbus A320 piloted by Captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, made an unpowered emergency water landing in the Hudson River after multiple bird strikes caused both jet engines to fail. All 155 passengers and crew aboard the Airbus A320 successfully evacuated from the partially submerged airframe as it sank into the river; they were rescued by nearby watercraft. Several occupants suffered injuries, a few of them serious, but only one required hospitalization overnight. The incident came to be known as the "Miracle on the Hudson", and Captain Sullenberger and the crew were hailed as heroes.
The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200, registered N106US, operating as a US Airways scheduled domestic commercial passenger flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. About three minutes into the flight, at local time 3:27 p.m. EST, the plane struck a flock of Canada geese during its initial climb out from LaGuardia, just northeast of the George Washington Bridge. The bird strike caused both jet engines to quickly lose power.
As the aircraft lost altitude, the flight deck crew decided that the plane could not reach the closest airfield. They turned southbound and glided over the Hudson, finally ditching the airliner off midtown Manhattan near the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, about three minutes after losing power.
The entire crew of Flight 1549 was awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. The award citations read, "This emergency ditching and evacuation, with the loss of no lives, is a heroic and unique aviation achievement." National Transportation Safety Board member Kitty Higgins described the feat as "the most successful ditching in aviation history."

US Airways
US Airways was a major American airline that ceased operations on October 17, 2015 after merging with American Airlines. It operated an extensive international and domestic network, with 193 destinations in 24 countries in North America, South America, Europe and the Middle East. The airline was an affiliate member of Oneworld and utilized a fleet of 343 mainline jet aircraft, as well as 278 regional jet and turbo-prop aircraft operated by contract and subsidiary airlines under the name US Airways Express.
The carrier operated the US Airways Shuttle, a US Airways brand which provided hourly service between Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C. As of October 2013, US Airways employed 32,312 people worldwide and operated 3,028 daily flights (1,241 US Airways Mainline, 1,790 US Airways Express) Roughly 60% of US Airways flights were operated by US Airways Express.
In 1979, after passage of the Airline Deregulation Act, Allegheny Airlines changed its name to USAir and began seeking to expand its operations. A decade later, it had acquired Piedmont Airlines and Pacific Southwest Airlines, and was one of the U.S.'s seven remaining transcontinental legacy carriers. In 2005, America West Airlines carried out a reverse merger, acquiring the assets and branding of the larger US Airways while putting the America West leadership team largely in charge of the merged airline.

TRIP REPORT - US Airways (E175, 757), St. Louis to St. Maarten
With the official end to the US Airways brand this past month, I thought it was a good time to present my last-ever trip on the airline back in May. For airline nerds like myself, this was an interesting time to fly US Airways/American. The merger was going full-steam ahead at the time. When we passed through Charlotte (the biggest US Airways hub), about half of the planes were repainted in the new American Airlines livery. Even the crew kept switching off between the 2 different names. On this trip, I was traveling with my family on vacation right after graduating from college. With the official end to the US Airways brand this past month, I thought it was a good time to present my last-ever trip on the airline back in May. For airline nerds like myself, this was an interesting time to fly US Airways/American. The merger was going full-steam ahead at the time. When we passed through Charlotte (the biggest US Airways hub), about half of the planes were repainted in the new American Airlines livery. Even the crew kept switching off between the 2 different names. On this trip, I was traveling with my family on vacation right after graduating from college. We tried something new, and rented a small condo on the island of St. Maarten. To get there, I originally booked us on an American Airlines itinerary connecting in Miami both ways. However, the flight times changed drastically, and I switched us over to a US Airways itinerary via Charlotte for no additional charge. Even better, this new itinerary meant that we got to fly on 2 of my favorite aircraft: The Embraer E175 (absolutely the best regional jet out there right now), and the Boeing 757 (an awesome large single-aisle plane capable of flying very challenging routes). Plus, Charlotte has always been one of my favorite hubs. The whole experience went flawlessly, so it was a great last experience with US Airways. I'll miss the brand, but I'm optimistic about the future of the new American Airlines.

It's a great way to log my most probably last flight on US AIrways.
Departure: 70%
Charlotte's Douglas airport has a nice layout! However it can be very crowded during the peak moments. wifi did not work so great but there where plenty of charging stations. Boarding was chaotic as nobody new which group was boarding.
Aircraft Cleanliness 80%
Fresh and clean appreance, way better than the ghetto-configuration that I had on FLL-CLT.
Seat comfort: 70%
Each seat was accompanied with a pillow and a blanket. legroom was ok, Very bad lumbar support however,
Crew 80%
Only 1 F/A greeting the pax, tending to F-class and helping wheelchair pax board the plane! Kudos to this single F/A but this is just too much for 1 single person to do. We where kept informed during the weather delay in New York.
IFE: 80%
Wifi
Catering: 70%
Snack basket with multiple cookies, multiple rounds where served as well. Sufficient but this is wat European airlines would serve in Y on a flight this length.
Arrival 50%
While JFK Terminal 8 is pretty open and nice to walkt trough! However their organisation was a mess! No info, no annoucements, nobody knew nothing which carroussel the baggage would arrive.
Overall verdict: 71%
It was nice to try out Domestic first class on US Airways! While the A321 looked fresh the seats where firmer than United's. They where ok but I would not want to fly them on let's say a transcon. Crew was nice but understaffed (4 F/A's for a full 321). US Airways recenlty moved their JFK operations to Terminal 8, however terminal 8 isn't ready for US yet as their was no signage nor information for any of the US AIrways flights....

While other major US carriers are investing alot to improve their inflight product US Airways is still the same as it was 5 years ago, It really reminded me of the old days of USA domestic travel. Not too much information at the gate, old plane, terrible BOB and no IFE.... On the one side I'm glad to log US one more time but on the other hand I'm not sad at all they will be merging into American Airlines

While other major US carriers are investing alot to improve their inflight product US Airways is still the same as it was 5 years ago, It really reminded me of the old days of USA domestic travel. Not too much information at the gate, old plane, terrible BOB and no IFE.... On the one side I'm glad to log US one more time but on the other hand I'm not sad at all they will be merging into American Airlines
