AMR Corporation, (NYSE:AMR) the parent company of American Airlines, reported a Q1 EPS loss of $1.31, slightly narrow than the $1.32 loss analysts had expected. Revenues for the quarter were up 9.2% year-over-year to $5.5 billion, in-line with the consensus estimate.
"High fuel prices remain one of the biggest challenges to our industry and our company. We believe our steps to aggressively increase revenues, reduce capacity, control non-fuel operating costs, and bolster liquidity will help us to better manage the challenges we currently face," said AMR Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey. "While we clearly must achieve better results as we continue to strengthen our business, we have made some meaningful progress. American Airlines and the Transport Workers Union have reached a tentative agreement in principle for the Fleet Service and Ground Service employees. This tentative agreement provides American's Fleet Service and Ground Service employees with increased compensation and other enhancements such as additional holidays, sick time and vacation.
The tentative agreement also gives American additional productivity and better aligns American's work rules with all other airlines through outsourcing the day line cabin cleaning and fueling work.
The employees currently performing these jobs will be reassigned to other duties. The productivity improvements and savings provided through the outsourcing helps fund the structural increases and other economic enhancements, while ensuring that American remains competitive.
AMR (NYSE:AMR) has potential upside of 73.4% based on a current price of $2.66 and an average consensus analyst price target of $4.61.

AMR Corporation, the parent company of the nation's third largest airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, seeking to clear massive debt built up by years of higher jet fuel prices and labor struggles.
American Airlines announced Tuesday it sought the protection to reduce its costs and debt to remain competitive. The airline will continue normal flight operations during the reorganization. American is the only U.S. legacy airline that hasn't filed for bankruptcy protection. The last major airline to do so was Delta back in 2005.
American Airlines' also announced CEO Gerard Arpey will step down from his position in the company, being replaced by current president Thomas Horton.
In a press release, new CEO Thomas Horton commented on the planned restructuring of the company saying, "Achieving the competitive cost structure we need remains a key imperative in this process and, as one part of that, we plan to initiate further negotiations with all of our unions to reduce our labor costs to competitive levels. American Airlines has a strong, proud history and we will have a successful future. Working through this difficult, but necessary action and process, I am confident we will succeed in enhancing our reputation as a global leader known for excellence and innovation, a travel partner customers seek out, and a carrier that serves communities throughout the world."
American Airlines cited labor-contract rules that forced the company to spend at least $600 million more than other airlines. The company lost $162 million in the third quarter, making it the 14th quarter the airline has lost in the past 16.

AMR Corporation, the parent company that owns American Airlines, has filed for bankruptcy protection. The announcement follows what can only be characterized as a disastrous stretch for the US carrier, posting yearly losses of $471 Million and taking a 79% hit on its stock price.
A costly, on-going labor dispute between management and pilots is widely cited as the cause of American's woes. Stretching from 2006, talks recently broke down earlier in November when the Allied Pilots Association, the union representing American captains, refused to take a vote on a proposed contract. Thomas Horton, who is taking over the helm of AMR Corp. following CEO George Arpey's departure, claims American faces an $800 million cost disadavantage compared to other airlines when it comes to labor expenses.
Also contributing to American's slide is its outdated squadron of planes, which gobble up expensive fuel. The carrier will proceed with a $38 billion aircraft upgrade, despite its Chapter 11 announcement.
American has taken heat in recent years over its lucrative executive bonuses, a point that is bound to resurface as AMR struggles to restructure its finances. Top brass received $6.5 million in bonuses in 2009 alone, a year during which the company lost $375 million in its first quarter.
American's fate, as well as what kind of impact passenger's might feel, is still unclear. The nation's top two airlines, like Delta and United, have gone onto flourish after filing bankruptcy, however, they were aided by mergers with other carriers (Northwest and Continental, respectively). American Airlines merged with the now-defunct TWA in 2001, but was hit hard in the economic aftermath of the September 11th attacks.

Bella Goren earned her executive and Fortune 500 chief financial officer credentials in the airline industry, one of the most intensely competitive and dynamic global industries. She now serves as a director on the boards of three global companies, including LyondellBasell Industries N.V., one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies; Gap Inc., a retail company with a portfolio of brands; and MassMutual Financial Group, a leading mutual life insurance company, with a number of major affiliates, including OppenheimerFunds.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with highest honors from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin in 1983, Goren joined DuPont, where she conducted nuclear waste disposal research. With the desire to expand her business skills, she went on to receive an MBA from Southern Methodist University, graduating first in her class.
Building on the foundation of her engineering and business backgrounds, Goren joined American Airlines as a financial analyst, beginning her multifaceted, 27-year career with the company. She held roles of progressively greater responsibility in areas that included human resources, revenue management, investor relations, customer services planning, Asia/Pacific operations and customer relationship marketing, before becoming CFO of American Airlines and AMR Corporation.
Goren is fluent in Russian. She resides in Dallas and is active in both professional organizations and philanthropic efforts. She serves on the Cockrell School’s Engineering Advisory Board as well as on the boards of the Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University and the National Association of Corporate Directors of North Texas. She is also a member of the International Women’s Forum. Previously, she served on the boards of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Business Council for the Arts. In 2013, she received the Dallas Business Journal’s Women in Business Award, and in 2015, she was named a distinguished graduate of the Cockrell School.
Goren and her husband have two daughters. Among the many things they do together, one of their favorites is traveling throughout the United States and around the world.

Working through this difficult, but necessary action and process, I am confident we will succeed in enhancing our reputation as a global leader known for excellence and innovation, a travel partner customers seek out, and a carrier that serves communities throughout the world."
American Airlines cited labor-contract rules that forced the company to spend at least $600 million more than other airlines. The company lost $162 million in the third quarter, making it the 14th quarter the airline has lost in the past 16.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with highest honors from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin in 1983, Goren joined DuPont, where she conducted nuclear waste disposal research. With the desire to expand her business skills, she went on to receive an MBA from Southern Methodist University, graduating first in her class.
Building on the foundation of her engineering and business backgrounds, Goren joined American Airlines as a financial analyst, beginning her multifaceted, 27-year career with the company. She held roles of progressively greater responsibility in areas that included human resources, revenue management, investor relations, customer services planning, Asia/Pacific operations and customer relationship marketing, before becoming CFO of American Airlines and AMR Corporation.
Goren is fluent in Russian. She resides in Dallas and is active in both professional organizations and philanthropic efforts. She serves on the Cockrell School’s Engineering Advisory Board as well as on the boards of the Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University and the National Association of Corporate Directors of North Texas. She is also a member of the International Women’s Forum. Previously, she served on the boards of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Business Council for the Arts. Bella Goren earned her executive and Fortune 500 chief financial officer credentials in the airline industry, one of the most intensely competitive and dynamic global industries. She now serves as a director on the boards of three global companies, including LyondellBasell Industries N.V., one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies; Gap Inc., a retail company with a portfolio of brands; and MassMutual Financial Group, a leading mutual life insurance company, with a number of major affiliates, including OppenheimerFunds.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with highest honors from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin in 1983, Goren joined DuPont, where she conducted nuclear waste disposal research. With the desire to expand her business skills, she went on to receive an MBA from Southern Methodist University, graduating first in her class.
Building on the foundation of her engineering and business backgrounds, Goren joined American Airlines as a financial analyst, beginning her multifaceted, 27-year career with the company. She held roles of progressively greater responsibility in areas that included human resources, revenue management, investor relations, customer services planning, Asia/Pacific operations and customer relationship marketing, before becoming CFO of American Airlines and AMR Corporation.
Goren is fluent in Russian. She resides in Dallas and is active in both professional organizations and philanthropic efforts. She serves on the Cockrell School’s Engineering Advisory Board as well as on the boards of the Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University and the National Association of Corporate Directors of North Texas. She is also a member of the International Women’s Forum. Previously, she served on the boards of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Business Council for the Arts. MDA expands partnership with DigitalGlobe
Richmond, BC - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. ("MDA" or the "Company") (TSX: MDA), a global communications and information company, announced today that it has signed a contract with DigitalGlobe, Inc., to expand its existing direct access ground systems to include the ability to task, downlink, and process imagery from the WorldView-3 and GeoEye-1 satellites.
MDA has also signed an agreement to become DigitalGlobe’s preferred supplier of ground station solutions offered to international customers. This is an update to an agreement announced in December 2006. MDA’s solution enables customers to directly access the optical imaging capabilities of the supported satellites to obtain timely and accurate geospatial data that is critical for decision-making.
Don Osborne, MDA’s group vice president of Information Systems said, “We are excited to renew our long-standing partnership agreement, which allows DigitalGlobe and MDA to deliver systems enabling direct access to DigitalGlobe’s satellite constellation that provide the world’s highest resolution commercial imagery.”
