Recorded live at the Alpine Valley Ampitheater in East Troy, Wisconsin on July 3,1979.It was taken from an AM mono broadcast during a thunderstorm. The storm caused a lot of problems with the broadcast so the quality is so-so but as live recordings from the MONOLITH tour are rare this is worthy of posting. The recordings that were circulated of this show were entitled "Monolith In The Storm". Thanks to You-Tube user Belexes for the corrections.

Recorded live at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland 0n June 2,1996. Kansas was the opening act for Styx. This was the last time I saw Kansas and the next to the last concert that I ever attended. The last was Kiss. I was pretty stoked when I saw a recording of a show that I actually attended. I saw Kansas at this venue 4 times. 1978,1981,1982 and 1996
The performance is from the "Freaks Of Nature" tour which was almost 2 years long! The song is from the 1979 "Monolith" album. It was written by Kerry Livgren.

Kansas 
i/ˈkænzəs/ is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area. The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind", although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called "Kansans". For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue.
When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually prevailed, and on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state. After the Civil War, the population of Kansas grew rapidly when waves of immigrants turned the prairie into farmland. Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing high yields of wheat, corn, sorghum, and soybeans. Kansas is the 15th most extensive and the 34th most populous of the 50 United States.

In 1803, most of what is now Kansas (KS) was part of the Louisiana Purchase (Until 1848, southwest KS was part of Spain, Mexico & then the Republic of Texas).
The U.S. purchased Louisiana from the French so we could continue our expansion/settlement west. In 1822 many settlers left from Missouri through Kansas to New Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail.
In 1827 Fort Leavenworth was the first white settlement in Kansas (followed by other forts) and was established to protect settlers heading west.
In 1854 the U.S. government passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This created the boundaries for the Kansas Territory and encouraged settlement. Part of the Act was that the territory would follow popular sovereignty - meaning that the settlers in KS would vote whether it would enter as a free or slave state. Many settlers came in to sway the vote. Tensions rose.
In 1861 KS was admitted as the 34th state. It came into the U.S. as a free state.
After the Civil War there was increased settlement in KS from war veterans, free blacks leaving the south, and Europeans.

From the mid 1850s, until the Civil War, Kansas was "bleeding." Due to all the settlers coming into to the state to sway the free/slave vote, violence broke out over the issue. This time period was called "Bleeding Kansas" by a New York writer named Horace Greeley and is considered by many to be the first battlefield of the Civil War...years before the war started.
Jayhawks were the nicknames given to the settlers in KS that were fighting to make sure that it was admitted as a free state. KS is also referred to as the Jayhawk State.
Ad astra per aspera is Latin for "to the stars through difficulties." The people of KS have overcome many great struggles including war, weather and outlaws.
After the Civil War the Chisholm Trail was established from Texas, through KS, to the railroads in Kansas City so that cattle ranchers could get their product to markets out east. A number of small & famous towns were established along the trail including Dodge City. These towns hosted many famous lawmen and gunfighters like Wild Bill Hickok and Wyatt Earp. The Chisholm Trail created the wild west era (the old west).

A geographic center of the contiguous
Rolling plains and our golden waves are continuous
Kansas City and Topeka in the north east
With high bluffs and our rivers dissecting and deep
The gentle Flint Hills and the Osage Plains
Rolling south southeast, yeah Oklahoma way

Up to the border where our flower's mountain sits ready

The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean "people of the wind" or "people of the south wind," although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called "Kansans." For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the Eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the Western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue.
When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually prevailed and on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state. After the Civil War, the population of Kansas grew rapidly when waves of immigrants turned the prairie into farmland. Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing high yields of wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers. Kansas is the 15th most extensive and the 34th most populous of the 50 United States.
