State parks or provincial parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" or "province" as a political subdivision. State parks are typically established by a state to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic interest, or recreational potential. There are state parks under the administration of the government of each U.S. state, and of some states of Mexico. The term is also used in Australia, though the distinction between state and national parks there is different. The Canadian equivalent term is provincial park. Similar systems of local government maintained parks exist in other countries, but the terminology varies.
State parks are thus similar to national parks, but under state rather than federal administration. Similarly, local government entities below state level may maintain parks, e.g., regional parks or county parks. In general, state parks are smaller than national parks, with a few exceptions such as the Adirondack Park in New York and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.
Kanopolis State Park contains a reservoir, desert plants such as yucca, a prairie dog town, and scenic sandstone canyons. It is located in the Smoky Hills region of the U.S. state of Kansas. The park is located southwest of the city of Salina, just south of I-70.
The park, completed in 1948, includes more than 22,000 acres (89 km²) of rolling hills, bluffs and woods and a 3000 acre (12 km²) lake, offering hunting, fishing, over 25 miles (40 km) of trails, and other recreational activities. Game includes pheasant, quail, prairie chickens, deer, beaver, wild turkey, squirrels, rabbits, coyotes and waterfowl; fishing for white bass and crappie is popular.

Highlights frommy March 11, 2011, hiking trip to Kanapolis State Park in Marquette, Kan.
A 3.5 mile hike through a portion of Horse Thief Canyon, Kanopolis State Park, Kansas. There are over 10 miles of trails available for foot, horse, and bicycle traffic. The day I was there they had a trail run and some of the people ran 50 + miles. I was happy to get in the 3.5 I got, I could not imagine running 50 miles.
On my way to Kanopolis State Park on March 11, 2011, I stopped off at Mushroom Rock State Park. It's the smallest state park in Kansas.

Earlier this winter Mountain Hardwear sent me one of their excellent jackets along with some other goodies, with the goal of going out and exploring in some winter conditions. Unfortunately, since I am in Kansas for graduate school right now it needed to be a quick adventure, and needed to be somewhere close. Kansas doesn't exactly have intense winter conditions, but we made do with what we could find and I was able to test how the jacket responded to intense wind at least. I shot these time-lapse videos while we were at our campsite, setting up, enjoying the fire, and breaking down camp. Music is "Dry Air" by Podington Bear (podingtonbear.com/)

Trout Fishing at Kanopolis Seep Stream. It was time to get out of the house and break away from winter boredom. I loaded up the 2 wt and ventured over to the Kanopolis seep stream for a little trout fishing. The seep stream is a 1 1/2 mile long stream that flows out of the bottom of the dam that holds back the waters of Kanopolis Lake in Central Kansas. The stream offers an unique experience for Kansas fishermen. This is the only stream in Kansas where fisherman can catch trout. Once a month during the winter KDWP stocks approximately 800 rainbows and browns throughout the various pools of the stream. The area is open to all types of fishing but offers a great experience for fly fishing without traveling hundreds of miles. If you're tired of being stuck in the house this winter, g...
Presented by Dr. Daniel Bowen, Professor Emeritus of Biology, Benedictine College, Atchison, KS. Since the 1970s, when Dr. Bowen became a professor at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, and began studying birds along the Missouri River, he's been restoring river habitat at Benedictine Bottoms. Today, all along the river, people working in restoration look to the work done by Bowen and his cohorts as a model for their efforts; and the Bottoms continues to be a laboratory for understanding how river habitat should work and for developing techniques to make that a reality. Dr. Bowen will tell the story of bringing Benedictine Bottoms back to life as a functioning river habitat -- what worked, what didn't, what changes have been made over those 35 years and what lives there now. Benedict...
