1798 - TG4
This is a presentation by
TG4,
Ireland's
Irish language television service, in the series '
Ceol ón gCroí' ('
Music from the
Heart'). During each broadcast of this series, a singer is invited to revisit some iconic event in the history of Ireland. Arising from this the singer is invited to compose and to sing a new song in
Irish.
The singer this time is the Belfast-born Áine Uí Cheallaigh, who lives in
Ring ('
An Rinn' or 'Rinn Ó gCuanach'), a small Gaeltacht (Irish speaking district, near
Dungarvan in
County Waterford. Her visit is to the great rebellion of 1798, famously described by
Thomas Pakenham in his book, '
The Year of the French'.
