Tristan da Cunha /ˈtrɪstən də ˈkuːnjə/, colloquially Tristan, is both a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) from the nearest inhabited land, Saint Helena,2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) from the nearest continental land, South Africa, and 3,360 kilometres (2,090 mi) from South America. The territory consists of the main island, also named Tristan da Cunha, which has a north–south length of 11.27 kilometres (7.00 mi) and has an area of 98 square kilometres (38 sq mi), along with the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible and Gough Islands.
Tristan da Cunha is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. This includes Saint Helena and equatorial Ascension Island some 3,730 kilometres (2,318 mi) to the north of Tristan. The island has a population of 267 as of January 2016.
Tristan (Latin & Brythonic: Drustanus; Welsh: Trystan), also known as Tristram, is the male hero of the Arthurian Tristan and Iseult story. He was a Cornish knight of the Round Table. He is the son of Blancheflor and Rivalen (in later versions Isabelle and Meliodas), and the nephew of King Mark of Cornwall, sent to fetch Iseult back from Ireland to wed the king. However, he and Iseult accidentally consume a love potion while en route and fall helplessly in love. The pair undergo numerous trials that test their secret affair.
Tristan made his first medieval appearance in the twelfth century in Celtic mythology circulating in the north of France and the Kingdom of Brittany, which had close ancestral and cultural links with Cornwall by way of the ancient British kingdom of Dumnonia, as made clear in the story itself, and the closely related Cornish and Breton languages. Although the oldest stories concerning Tristan are lost, some of the derivatives still exist. Most early versions fall into one of two branches, the "courtly" branch represented in the retellings of the Anglo-Norman poet Thomas of Britain and his German successor Gottfried von Strassburg, and in the Folie Tristan d'Oxford; and the "common" branch, including the works of the French. The name Tristan is also known as "Trischin" in the Maltese culture.

I was lucky enough to spend one full day on the remotest island in the world. Tristan Da Cunha is remarkably beautiful--a giant green and black volcano in the very middle of the South Atlantic. The people, one of the most isolated populations on earth, are so hospitable and friendly--I was honored to be able to meet so many of them.
Documentary about Tristan Da Cunha, one of the world's most isolated islands, with a population of only 300 people. Its only contact with the outside world at the time was a once a year mail boat. American producer, John Heminway travelled to the island on that boat and spent two weeks on the island. The film is a record of his journey and his experiences during his stay.

Our last stop on the class afloat 2015-2016 itinerary was the worlds most remote human inhabited island. We only had one day on this amazing island but we made the most of it and explored through the town and went on a little hike. The people were very nice and welcoming to us.
I thought I was extremely fortunate to visit Tristan Da Cunha the first time. Returning after one year was extra special, and I was so grateful for the chance to revisit this magical and little-known island in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. I ran into some familiar faces and can only pray that one day, I get to return.

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00). This mini-documentary follows a rare visit to Gough Island - an extremely remote isle in the middle of the South Atlantic. Gough is widely regarded as one of the most important temperate seabird nesting sites in the world, with tens of millions of birds depending upon the island for nesting. Gough is part of the Tristan da Cunha group, and is uninhabited except for a small weather station. But the island has a dark secret... humble house mice that were introduced in the 19th century found abundant food in the form of the nesting seabirds, and few predators. They have bred unchecked and evolved into 27cm long (including tail) monster mice that k...

The islands are the last British colony in the South Pacific and the most isolated British dependency, apart from Tristan da Cunha. The rugged main island was settled by the infamous mutineers of the HMS Bounty and their Polynesian companions, and most of Pitcairn's mere four dozen current inhabitants are their descendants. They are one of the least-populated entities given an ISO country code (PN). See Pitcairn Islands =============...
