Chris Eubank Sr told his son to aim for body NOT head of injured opponent Nick Blackwell who is now in induced coma.
It is nearly 25 years since boxer Chris Eubank left a fellow fighter, desperately ill after a bout that led to calls for a ban on the sport. Yesterday he was hailed a hero for his intervention in a similarly brutal battle, in which his son Chris Eubank Jr injured an opponent so badly, he had to be put in an induced coma. Nick Blackwell, who suffered bleeding to the brain, was carried out of Wembley Arena on a stretcher, and taken to hospital, where he remained under observation yesterday. Eubank Sr had been at the ringside on Saturday and may have saved Blackwell’s life, by urging his son to punch his opponent’s body, rather than his face, over the last two rounds after telling him the referee should have ended the contest.
He also banged on the canvas floor of the ring, in an attempt to get referee Victor Loughlin to call off the fight. The contest was finally stopped in the tenth round, after the ringside doctor advised the referee, that defending champion Blackwell, was unable to see through his left eye, and Eubank Jr took the British middleweight title. Amid widespread concern about the potential dangers of boxing, there was also praise for Eubank Sr. One Twitter user said: ‘Chris Eubank Sr may well have saved Nick Blackwell’s life last night. Class act.’ The retired boxer’s later career was blighted by the memory of the night in Tottenham, North London, in 1991 when he left Michael Watson in a 40-day coma. Brain-damaged Watson survived but has been severely disabled ever since.
On Saturday night Eubank Jr was well ahead at the end of the eighth round, when his father climbed into the ring to offer advice. TV cameras caught him telling his son: ‘If the referee doesn’t stop it, then I don’t know what to tell you, but I will tell you this: one, if he doesn’t stop it and we keep on beating him like this, he is getting hurt; two, if it goes to a decision, why didn’t the referee stop the fight? I don’t get why. So maybe you shouldn’t leave it to the referee. So you’re not going to take him out to the face, you’re going to take him out to the body.’
Eubank’s punches became less frequent in the last two rounds, and many boxing fans on Twitter suggested Eubank Sr’s advice to his son saved Blackwell’s life. Soon after the fight was stopped, Blackwell, from Wiltshire, who had a nose bleed, suddenly fell to the ring floor. He received medical attention immediately. British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith said yesterday: ‘He’s in intensive care, he’s in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after. ‘It’s a very normal procedure. They put you in a coma to get the swelling to go down. There’s no time scale. Now it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing.’ Eubank Jr, from Brighton, said after the fight: ‘I hit him with some big shots, maybe the referee should have stopped the fight earlier. I have respect for anyone who steps in the ring. It’s sad that he had to leave on a stretcher.’

Chris Eubank Jnr press conference following controversial Nick Blackwell fight. Chris Eubank Sr says he would have stopped fight.
Chris Eubank Senior insists that he was trying to protect Nick Blackwell, because Eubank Junior's punching is "powerful and dangerous". Blackwell remains in an induced coma, after suffering a bleed to the brain, during his British title defence against Eubank Junior at the weekend. The doctor ordered the fight to be ended in the 10th round, after becoming concerned with the severe swelling on Blackwell's eye, but the damage was in fact much more serious.
Eubank Senior was heard telling his son to stop punching Blackwell in the face, in the latter stages of the fight. Speaking during Tuesday's post-fight press conference, Eubank Senior confirmed his intentions were to protect Blackwell. "Even in sparring, I tell Junior to stay away from the head because his punching is fast, powerful and dangerous, so most certainly I was saying this to protect the fighter," he said. "He had the fight won. This is a dangerous sport and we are real." Despite Blackwell's injury, Eubank Senior claims he supports the safety measures put in place by the British Boxing Board of Control.
"We are very supportive of what the British Boxing Board has done to aid fighters," he said. "All fighters who have injuries now are able to have normal lives, because of the safety measures put in place since the fight, against Michael Watson in 1991." Eubank Senior says Nick Blackwell did not have the ability to protect himself, against his son's shots. Nick Blackwell's performance was magnificent in terms of his heart, but he didn't have the ability to protect his heart," he said.
However, Eubank Senior shied away from claims, that he saved Blackwell's life by telling his son to stay away from his head. "No I would not say that," he said. "That's a conclusion I can't draw. This is what I do. I do it in the gym. This is the rule for me. What happened on Saturday night was not the exception. It's a rule for me. I've always been this way, because I've been in there. I've tasted the bitter beatings."
Eubank Junior has revealed his torment when he heard, that Blackwell had been taken to hospital following the fight. "When I heard the news, it was tough to hear," he said. "No fighter goes in there to cause that type of damage to an opponent. There's nothing personal. Things may be said in the lead up to the fight, two men going in there, putting their pride on the line. It was upsetting and the first thing I had when I heard was to say no Twitter that he is a true warrior and to wish him a speedy recovery. You play rugby, football and cricket, but you don't play boxing. It's two men giving their all in there. We put our lives on the line and we are fighting for our livelihoods. I've tunnel vision when I'm in there and my dad could see he had nothing left and so he said 'body'."
However, Eubank Junior claims he has not thought about quitting, since Saturday night's events. "Not all all, this is boxing," he said. "As fighters, we know the risks. We know that we are risking our health every time we stop in the line. But it's a risk we're willing to take because, with that risk comes great reward. "I will continue my career. I have the British belt and now I want to go for a world title." Eubank Senior claims his family have not celebrated his son's win, because of Blackwell's condition. The Eubanks held a press conference in London today, to speak about Saturday's sad events, and Eubank Senior says their thoughts are with B lack well and his family.

These are old wounds bubbling back to the surface. It's far from anything new, and worse fights have probably happened over the years when cameras weren't rolling. Floyd Jr and Floyd Sr were estranged and not on speaking terms for many years, and there seems to be a legitimate jealousy that Sr has toward his brother, Roger, as far as Jr claiming that Roger made him the fighter he is today.

Nick Blackwell, who suffered bleeding to the brain, was carried out of Wembley Arena on a stretcher, and taken to hospital, where he remained under observation yesterday. Eubank Sr had been at the ringside on Saturday and may have saved Blackwell’s life, by urging his son to punch his opponent’s body, rather than his face, over the last two rounds after telling him the referee should have ended the contest.
He also banged on the canvas floor of the ring, in an attempt to get referee Victor Loughlin to call off the fight. Chris Eubank Senior insists that he was trying to protect Nick Blackwell, because Eubank Junior's punching is "powerful and dangerous". Blackwell remains in an induced coma, after suffering a bleed to the brain, during his British title defence against Eubank Junior at the weekend. The doctor ordered the fight to be ended in the 10th round, after becoming concerned with the severe swelling on Blackwell's eye, but the damage was in fact much more serious.
Eubank Senior was heard telling his son to stop punching Blackwell in the face, in the latter stages of the fight. Speaking during Tuesday's post-fight press conference, Eubank Senior confirmed his intentions were to protect Blackwell. "Even in sparring, I tell Junior to stay away from the head because his punching is fast, powerful and dangerous, so most certainly I was saying this to protect the fighter," he said. "He had the fight won. This is a dangerous sport and we are real." Despite Blackwell's injury, Eubank Senior claims he supports the safety measures put in place by the British Boxing Board of Control.
"We are very supportive of what the British Boxing Board has done to aid fighters," he said. "All fighters who have injuries now are able to have normal lives, because of the safety measures put in place since the fight, against Michael Watson in 1991." Eubank Senior says Nick Blackwell did not have the ability to protect himself, against his son's shots. Nick Blackwell's performance was magnificent in terms of his heart, but he didn't have the ability to protect his heart," he said.
However, Eubank Senior shied away from claims, that he saved Blackwell's life by telling his son to stay away from his head. "No I would not say that," he said. "That's a conclusion I can't draw. This is what I do. I do it in the gym. This is the rule for me. What happened on Saturday night was not the exception. It's a rule for me. I've always been this way, because I've been in there. I've tasted the bitter beatings."
Eubank Junior has revealed his torment when he heard, that Blackwell had been taken to hospital following the fight. "When I heard the news, it was tough to hear," he said. "No fighter goes in there to cause that type of damage to an opponent. There's nothing personal. Things may be said in the lead up to the fight, two men going in there, putting their pride on the line. It was upsetting and the first thing I had when I heard was to say no Twitter that he is a true warrior and to wish him a speedy recovery. You play rugby, football and cricket, but you don't play boxing. It's two men giving their all in there. We put our lives on the line and we are fighting for our livelihoods. I've tunnel vision when I'm in there and my dad could see he had nothing left and so he said 'body'."
However, Eubank Junior claims he has not thought about quitting, since Saturday night's events. "Not all all, this is boxing," he said. "As fighters, we know the risks. We know that we are risking our health every time we stop in the line. But it's a risk we're willing to take because, with that risk comes great reward. "I will continue my career. DENVER (AP) - Summoned by the sound of screams, a Colorado woman raced to her front yard to find a terrifying sight. A mountain lion was hunched over her 5-year-old son, biting him. The woman charged the animal, yanked away one of its paws and discovered her son's whole head was in its mouth. She didn't back down.
