A historic church in Golden Square is expected to sell for more than half-a-million dollars when it goes under the hammer this weekend.

The Uniting Church building has twice been given last-minute reprieves from aborted auctions, the most recent last September amid concerns about the removal of heritage-listed pews.

Tweed Sutherland real estate agent Matt Leonard said the Uniting Church owners were quoting between $500,000 and $550,000 for the Gothic-style church built in 1870.

“There’s certainly a lot of bricks and mortar there – and granite foundations – for that price, but I’d say the vendors have opted for a sensibly-priced quote range,” Mr Leonard said.

At last September’s sale Tweed Sutherland was expecting up to $1 million for the combined sale of the church and its adjoining manse. The manse sold for $400,000.

The auction will be held on the Panton Street site at 11am this Saturday.

More to come.
