DeMille's film Union Pacific, which took place in Omaha on April 28, 1939, a four-day celebration known as "Golden Spike Days" was held. The event in Omaha, location of Union Pacific headquarters, involved many parades and a variety of celebrations, as well as the movie premiere. Citizens of Omaha dressed in period costumes for events. Many Omaha men grew a beard and mustache to lend realism to their event costumes.

Lionel Legacy Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 steam locomotive. 6-11131.
Lionel did an excellent job with this locomotive and it operates as well as it both looks and sounds. Words really can't describe how nice this locomotive is without seeing and hearing it in person. It really is a very beautiful locomotive.
This locomotive features Legacy, Railsounds, an electro coupler on the rear of the tender, a fan driven smoke unit, a wireless tether, and Odyssey speed control.
The train is made up of reefer cars from Atlas O, Lionel, MTH Electric Trains, and Weaver Models. Behind the reefer cars are two Lionel 40 foot flat cars with Allis Chalmers construction equipment. The first flat car has a model 45 motor grader and the second is carrying a model TS-300 motor scraper. Both of those models were made for the National Toy Truck'n and Construction toy show that Toy Trucker and Contractor magazine has each year in Indianapolis. Following the flat cars are three Lionel tank cars and behind them is a K-Line boxcar. And bringing up the rear is a Lionel Union Pacific Ca-4 caboose.
The train is being operated with Lionel Legacy. The track is K-Line tubular with O-96 radius curves.
The 844 was the last of 45 4-8-4 northern type steam locomotives the Union Pacific owned. The name FEF came from the wheel arrangement of these locomotives, Four Eight Four.
All 45 FEFs were built by the American Locomotive Company, otherwise known as ALCo. The first 20 locomotives, #800-819, were delivered to the Union Pacific in 1937. This group of locomotives were to become class FEF-1 on the Union Pacific.
A second group, #820-834, class FEF-2, were delivered in 1939. The second group featured larger cylinders, larger drive wheels, smoke deflectors, and a centipede tender.
The final group, #835-844, class FEF-3,were delivered in 1944 and were the last steam locomotives delivered to the UP.
The 844 holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operated steam locomotive in the world. It is also the only steam locomotive to have never been retired by a Class 1 railroad. Today the 844 is part of the steam program the Union Pacific operates.
Besides the 844,there are three other surviving FEFs. FEF-1 814 is in Council Bluffs, Iowa. FEF-2 833 is in Ogden, Utah, and FEF-3 838 is also owned by the UP and is used as a parts locomotive for the 844.

A video showing the Overland models in HO of the UP's Steam turbines.
These machines were the only condensing steam locomotives built and operated in the USA and were in many ways engineering triumphs but eventually proved practical failures, like almost all the turbine experiments in both the USA and Britain. The locomotives were complete electric power-stations on wheels, and correspondingly complex. A large air-cooled condenser recycled most of the water and provided (in theory, at least) a vacuum that improved turbine efficiency.
Two were built by General Electric and rolled out in December 1938.

Returned to GE in June 1939, following unsatisfactory results
Saw extensive use on the GNR in a motive power shortage in 1943

A tribute to the "Big Boy" locomotives produced by Union Pacific, "Last of the Giants" shows the end of a memorable era in Western Railroading. The "Big Boy" is the popular name of the American Locomotive Company 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated, coal-fired, steam locomotives manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959.
In "Last of the Giants" you'll see the development of steam power on the Union Pacific from 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s, and 2-8-2s up to 2-10-2s and even 4-12-2s, shown through film, photos and animated diagrams. This is followed by the development of compound articulated Mallets and simple articulateds such as the Challengers.
The Big Boy fleet of twenty five locomotives were used primarily in the Wyoming Division to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. They were the only locomotives to use a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement consisting of a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves, two sets of eight driving wheels, and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
According to Union Pacific senior manager of Heritage Operations Ed Dickens Jr., the 4-8-8-4 series originally was to have been called "Wasatch". One day while one of the engines was being built an unknown worker scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on its front. With that, the legendary name was born, and has stuck ever since.
Measuring 132 feet long and weighing one and one-quarter million pounds, the Big Boys were appropriately named. These were the largest and heaviest of their type and could pull a loaded 5-1/2 mile long train on level track. Their tenders carried a massive 28 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons of water; and with a heavy train a Big Boy could use all of this up in the first half of a 57-mile rum. Although there were only 25 Big Boys ever built, they ran up a total of nearly 26 million miles in 18 years, hauling billions of tons.

Union Pacific is a 1939 American dramatic western film directed by Cecil B. DeMille, and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea. Based on the novel Trouble Shooter by Western fiction author Ernest Haycox, the film is about the building of the railroad across the American West.
The 1862 Pacific Railroad Act signed by President Lincoln authorizes pushing the Union Pacific Railroad westward across the wilderness toward California, but financial opportunist Asa Barrows hopes to profit from obstructing it. Chief troubleshooter Jeff Butler has his hands full fighting Barrows' agent, gambler Sid Campeau. Campeau's partner Dick Allen is Jeff's war buddy and rival suitor for engineer's daughter Molly Monahan. Who will survive the effort to push the railroad through at any cost?
Union Pacific was released in 1939 two months after John Ford's Stagecoach, which film historians consider responsible for transforming the Hollywood Western from "a mostly low budget, B film affair." Wheeler M. Dixon, for example, notes that after the appearance of these two films (Union Pacific and Stagecoach), the western was “something worthy of adult attention and serious criticism, and therefore a yardstick against which all westerns have been subsequently measured”.

Filmed by my grandfather in color. From historicomaha.com: In celebration of the world premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's film Union Pacific, which took place in Omaha on April 28, 1939, a four-day celebration known as "Golden Spike Days" was held. The event in Omaha, location of Union Pacific headquarters, involved many parades and a variety of celebrations, as well as the movie premiere. Citizens of Omaha dressed in period costumes for events. Many Omaha men grew a beard and mustache to lend realism to their event costumes. -
Lionel Union Pacific FEF
Lionel Legacy Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 steam locomotive. 6-11131. Lionel did an excellent job with this locomotive and it operates as well as it both looks and sounds. Words really can't describe how nice this locomotive is without seeing and hearing it in person. It really is a very beautiful locomotive. This locomotive features Legacy, Railsounds, an electro coupler on the rear of the tender, a fan driven smoke unit, a wireless tether, and Odyssey speed control. The train is made up of reefer cars from Atlas O, Lionel, MTH Electric Trains, and Weaver Models. Behind the reefer cars are two Lionel 40 foot flat cars with Allis Chalmers construction equipment. The first flat car has a model 45 motor grader and the second is carrying a model TS-300 motor scraper. Both of those models... -

A video showing the Overland models in HO of the UP's Steam turbines. These machines were the only condensing steam locomotives built and operated in the USA and were in many ways engineering triumphs but eventually proved practical failures, like almost all the turbine experiments in both the USA and Britain. The locomotives were complete electric power-stations on wheels, and correspondingly complex. A large air-cooled condenser recycled most of the water and provided (in theory, at least) a vacuum that improved turbine efficiency. Two were built by General Electric and rolled out in December 1938. A tribute to the "Big Boy" locomotives produced by Union Pacific, "Last of the Giants" shows the end of a memorable era in Western Railroading. The "Big Boy" is the popular name of the American Locomotive Company 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated, coal-fired, steam locomotives manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959. The train is made up of reefer cars from Atlas O, Lionel, MTH Electric Trains, and Weaver Models. Behind the reefer cars are two Lionel 40 foot flat cars with Allis Chalmers construction equipment. Both of those models were made for the National Toy Truck'n and Construction toy show that Toy Trucker and Contractor magazine has each year in Indianapolis. Following the flat cars are three Lionel tank cars and behind them is a K-Line boxcar. And bringing up the rear is a Lionel Union Pacific Ca-4 caboose.
The train is being operated with Lionel Legacy. The track is K-Line tubular with O-96 radius curves.
The 844 was the last of 45 4-8-4 northern type steam locomotives the Union Pacific owned. The name FEF came from the wheel arrangement of these locomotives, Four Eight Four.
All 45 FEFs were built by the American Locomotive Company, otherwise known as ALCo. The first 20 locomotives, #800-819, were delivered to the Union Pacific in 1937. This group of locomotives were to become class FEF-1 on the Union Pacific.
A second group, #820-834, class FEF-2, were delivered in 1939. The second group featured larger cylinders, larger drive wheels, smoke deflectors, and a centipede tender.
The final group, #835-844, class FEF-3,were delivered in 1944 and were the last steam locomotives delivered to the UP.
The 844 holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operated steam locomotive in the world. It is also the only steam locomotive to have never been retired by a Class 1 railroad. Today the 844 is part of the steam program the Union Pacific operates.
Besides the 844,there are three other surviving FEFs. FEF-1 814 is in Council Bluffs, Iowa. FEF-2 833 is in Ogden, Utah, and FEF-3 838 is also owned by the UP and is used as a parts locomotive for the 844.

These machines were the only condensing steam locomotives built and operated in the USA and were in many ways engineering triumphs but eventually proved practical failures, like almost all the turbine experiments in both the USA and Britain. The locomotives were complete electric power-stations on wheels, and correspondingly complex. A large air-cooled condenser recycled most of the water and provided (in theory, at least) a vacuum that improved turbine efficiency.
Two were built by General Electric and rolled out in December 1938.
Delivered to UP in April 1939
Returned to GE in June 1939, following unsatisfactory results

A tribute to the "Big Boy" locomotives produced by Union Pacific, "Last of the Giants" shows the end of a memorable era in Western Railroading. The "Big Boy" is the popular name of the American Locomotive Company 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated, coal-fired, steam locomotives manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959.
In "Last of the Giants" you'll see the development of steam power on the Union Pacific from 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s, and 2-8-2s up to 2-10-2s and even 4-12-2s, shown through film, photos and animated diagrams. This is followed by the development of compound articulated Mallets and simple articulateds such as the Challengers.
The Big Boy fleet of twenty five locomotives were used primarily in the Wyoming Division to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. They were the only locomotives to use a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement consisting of a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves, two sets of eight driving wheels, and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
According to Union Pacific senior manager of Heritage Operations Ed Dickens Jr., the 4-8-8-4 series originally was to have been called "Wasatch". One day while one of the engines was being built an unknown worker scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on its front. With that, the legendary name was born, and has stuck ever since.
Measuring 132 feet long and weighing one and one-quarter million pounds, the Big Boys were appropriately named. These were the largest and heaviest of their type and could pull a loaded 5-1/2 mile long train on level track. Their tenders carried a massive 28 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons of water; and with a heavy train a Big Boy could use all of this up in the first half of a 57-mile rum. Although there were only 25 Big Boys ever built, they ran up a total of nearly 26 million miles in 18 years, hauling billions of tons.

Come along with Penn Rail Videos as we give you a sample of mountain railroading in the state of Oregon. We visit the Blue Mountains, home to Union Pacific's La Grande Subdivision. In this video, we cover from Pendleton, Oregon to La Grande, Oregon. We'll see trains climbing up the mountain using helper locomotives, known as "DPUs", or "distributed power units". These helpers are remote controlled from the lead locomotive. We'll see a train that has a mid-train DPU, and then another on the rear! Stack trains are very common in this clip, however we do catch a manifest tackling the eastern portion of the hill. The top of the hill, Kamela, OR is featured as well. This engaging Kodachrome drama (formatted for television broadcast) from the Union Pacific ostensibly deals with safety at railroad grade crossings, but it's also about much more: youth's feeling of invulnerability; the highway patrolman as an authority figure; the look of the rural and urban West in the late 1950s; the urge to speed through a sparsely populated agricultural landscape; and the train's role as farmer's servant and potential killer. This film was made just five years after The Days of Our Years but belongs to a different world. This is not the close environment of urban railroad workers, but the wide-open spaces of the agricultural West. To be honest, It was not easy to go there even I live in Los Angeles. I don't drive and chasing trains by bus or walk is not easy for anyone. I really wish I could have friends like everybody else but it's hard to find someone close to me. They are usually younger(under age) than me or older generations. Union Pacific Breaks Down Norfolk Southern Passes
This is a video I made in Mableton Georgia of a Union Pacific train breaking down due to sticking breaks on one of its cars and a Norfolk Sothern stopping next to it for a short time so they can clear the track ahead for the Norfolk Southern to pass him. The Union Pacific was fixed and cleared to go about an hour after the Norfolk Southern passed and caused a big back up of trains which will air next on my video list on youtube. Stay tuned. -

Construction projects of this type have always involved contention between railroads and local governments, and the differing interests of railroads and government fill our history books. Suffice it to say that there's a great deal of background that isn't practical to include in the movie. Interestingly enough, the victims drive through a crossing with gates, lights and bells, so no one can pin the responsibility for this accident on corporate greed.
The most quotable line: as two railroad crewmen stand by the wrecked automobile, one says: ""Why don't they look, Frank?"" Frank responds: ""I don't know. Why don't they look?"" This short dialogue fragment, and in fact the whole movie, has become a big hit on the TV show Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Charged with a didactic agenda, The Last Clear Chance somehow always manages to look interesting even when it gets intensely instructional. It had the benefits of an excellent cinematographer, Bert Spielvogel, who also shot two other visually distinguished films, Design for Dreaming and In the Suburbs and The Relaxed Wife.

This video included UP4014 at LA County Fair, UP 3105, SD40-2 locomotive's one of very last main line action at Metrolink Covina station, UP 1996, Union Pacific steam locomotive 4014 and many more. Thanks for watching my videos and you all are everything to me.
UPDATE: Thank you for kind words & glad you all enjoyed my video. I didn't think it was a big deal simply because "Big Boy" was not under steam. It was rather "rare" event for me to see it on Metrolink line(ex-PE) with Union Pacific trains. I'm glad I saw the last movement of UP3105 at Covina station. I'm glad everything went to well and many thanks to UP, Metrolink, Rail Giant, & Maintenance crew.
