Northwind March - Ed. John R. Bourgeois This classic march introduces its audiences to the "proud musical heritage" of America's circus bands. As brisk and swift as the north wind, this edition is performed with contemporary concert march instrumentation, and although originally written in the 1890s, it is as exciting today as it was when it was new. European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) The nineteenth century in Europe is, in many ways, synonymous with the rise of the bourgeoisie. It is misleading, however, to consider this newly dominant middle class as a homogenous group; rather, the century may be more accurately described in terms of the rise of plural middle classes. While the classes comprising this group were united by their search for power based on property rights rather than hereditary privilege, they were otherwise strikingly diverse. Contemporary stereotypes of the bourgeois as a grasping philistine ought to therefore be nuanced. Along with the real, undeniable cruelty of many capitalists with respect to their workers, the middle classes also pioneered the first philanthropic voluntary associations, broadened the re...

In “Bourgeois Equality” (University of Chicago Press, 2016), the third volume of her trilogy extolling the virtues of the bourgeoisie, well-known economic historian Deirdre McCloskey explains, “Our riches were made not by piling brick on brick, bank balance on bank balance, but by piling idea on idea.” This book argues that ideas, rather than capital or institutions, have driven prosperity. Specifically, she points to equal liberty and dignity for ordinary people — ideas that upended ancient hierarchies and empowered commoners. In anticipation of comments suggesting Leninists and anarchists should 'unite against the capitalists': http://greatmomentsinleftism.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/left-unity.html Notions of anarchists and statists 'uniting' against the capitalists have a pretty clear conclusion every time - the statists get their way and the anarchists get thrown under the bus. In anticipation of Leninists calling me an anti-communist, let me reiterate that I am criticising authoritarian socialism for advocating means which are ineffective in establishing communist ends. I think it is true that the system created in the USSR and so on was merely replacing one hierarchy with another, however unlike anti-communists I do not believe it follows from this that hierarchy is somehow inevitable or written into our gene...
Organizacija: Centar za radničke studije (CRS) / Organized by: Centre for labour studies (radnickistudiji.org) 13.3.2014., 20h, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb, Croatia Moderated by: Stipe Ćurković talk at [01:45 - 52:54] discussion at [52:55 - 01:44:27] Citizens in modern bourgeois societies are free and more often than not in the position to elect their own governments. Despite this, state rule is class rule. This however is not due to corrupt politicians. Rather, class domination is already inscribed in the freedom and equality of commodity owners. Nor is this contradicted by the fact that state-mediated class domination often goes hand in hand with imposing limits on capitalist exploitation. https://www.facebook.com/events/294777284004908/
For most of human history, most people lived in abject poverty and cultural and technological stagnation. Only in the past 200 years or so has humankind seen a flourishing of new ideas that has led to our current state of relative health, wealth, safety, and happiness. Deirdre McCloskey says the difference lies in the power of market institutions and a burgeoning respect for those that participate in them. Celebrating innovation—not running from it—is the key to explaining this exponential growth. "You have to understand that all revolutionaries understand today that there is no way of overthrowing modern society except by violence, for the very good reason that this society defends itself by repression and violence. I am defending a revolutionary cause because my personal goal, which is that of all those here, is to overthrow bourgeois society."
