Cheshire, Connecticut

Cheshire is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 29,261 at the 2010 census. The center of population of Connecticut is located in Cheshire. In 2009, Cheshire was ranked #72 in Money magazine's "100 Best Places to Live". Likewise, in 2011 Cheshire was ranked #73 in Money's "100 Best Places to Live".

History

Cheshire was incorporated in May 1780 and named after the county of Cheshire, United Kingdom.

Connecticut's second worst air disaster took place over Cheshire on January 18, 1946, when an Eastern Air Lines DC-3 crashed in town. The crash occurred near Wolf Hill Road and Copper Valley Court, on land that was occupied by a country club. All seventeen people aboard the aircraft lost their lives.

During a July 23, 2007 home invasion (see Cheshire, Connecticut, home invasion murders), mother Jennifer and daughters Hayley and Michaela Petit were murdered, leaving behind sole survivor Dr. William Petit. The murder and the aftermath was featured in a segment that aired on the NBC-TV newsmagazine show Dateline NBC on October 5, 2010. In 2010, Steven Hayes was convicted of the murders and other crimes during the home invasion and was sentenced to death; his accomplice Joshua Komisarjevsky was convicted of the murders and other crimes in October 2011.

Carmel, Indiana

Carmel /ˈkɑːrməl/ is a suburban city in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States located immediately north of Indianapolis. It has been one of the fastest-growing communities in the country. In 2012, Carmel was selected the Best Place to Live in United States by CNN Money magazine. The population was 85,927 at the 2013 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Indiana.

History

Carmel was originally called Bethlehem and, under the latter name, was laid out and platted in 1837. The original settlers were predominantly Quakers. Today, the plot first established in Bethlehem, located at the intersection of Rangeline Road and Main Street, is marked by a clock tower, donated by the local Rotary Club in 2002. A post office was established as Carmel in 1846. The town of Bethlehem was renamed Carmel in 1874, at which time it was incorporated.

In 1924, one of the first automatic traffic signals in the U.S. was installed at the intersection of Main Street and Rangeline Road. The signal was the invention of Leslie Haines and is currently in the old train station on the Monon Trail.

Thomas "Tom T." Hall (born May 25, 1936 in Olive Hill, Kentucky) is an American country music songwriter, singer, novelist, and short-story writer. He has written 11 No. 1 hit songs, with 26 more that reached the Top 10, including the No. 1 international pop crossover smash "Harper Valley PTA" and the hit "I Love", which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. He became known to fans as "The Storyteller," thanks to his storytelling skills in his songwriting.

Biography

As a teenager, Hall organized a band called the Kentucky Travelers that performed before movies for a traveling theater. During a stint in the Army, Hall performed over the Armed Forces Radio Network and wrote comic songs about Army experiences. His early career included being a radio announcer at WRON, a local radio station in Ronceverte, West Virginia. Hall was also an announcer at WSPZ, which later became WVRC Radio in Spencer, West Virginia in the 1960s.

Hall's big songwriting break came in 1963, when country singer Jimmy C. Newman recorded his song, "DJ For a Day." Soon, Hall moved to Nashville, arriving in 1964 with $46 and a guitar; within months he had songs climbing the charts. Hall has been nicknamed "The Storyteller," and he has written songs for dozens of country stars, including Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, and Bobby Bare.
