Andrew Sarris (October 31, 1928 – June 20, 2012) was an American film critic, a leading proponent of the auteur theory of criticism.
Sarris was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Greek immigrant parents, Themis (née Katavolos) and George Andrew Sarris, and grew up in Ozone Park, Queens. After attending John Adams High School in South Ozone Park (where he overlapped with Jimmy Breslin), he graduated from Columbia University in 1951 and subsequently served for three years in the Army Signal Corps before moving to Paris for a year, where he befriended Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. Upon returning to New York's Lower East Side, Sarris briefly pursued graduate studies at his alma mater and Teachers College before turning to film criticism as a vocation. After initially writing for Film Culture, his first review for The Village Voice—a laudatory review of Psycho—was published in 1960. He is generally credited with popularizing the auteur theory in the United States of America and coining the term in his 1962 essay, "Notes on the Auteur Theory," which critics writing in Cahiers du Cinéma had inspired.
Joseph Frank "Buster" Keaton (October 4, 1895 – February 1, 1966) was an American actor, director, producer, writer, and stunt performer. He was best known for his silent films, in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic, deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face". Keaton was recognized as the seventh-greatest film director by Entertainment Weekly. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Keaton the 21st greatest male star of Classic Hollywood Cinema. Critic Roger Ebert wrote of Keaton's "extraordinary period from 1920 to 1929, [when] he worked without interruption on a series of films that make him, arguably, the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies". His career declined afterward with a dispiriting loss of his artistic independence when he was hired by MGM, which resulted in a crippling alcoholism that ruined his family life. He recovered in the 1940s, remarried, and revived his career to a degree as an honored comic performer for the rest of his life, earning an Academy Honorary Award in 1959.

The actors hold absolutely nothing back from the camera. Plot: Welcome to the crossroads... Wasteland is a mosaic of American college life seen through those that live it. Each of these characters, twenty-something, confused, insecure, and faceless they share the fate of an uncertain future. They are a cross-section of their generation, children of indifference manipulated by society to drive toward success, obsessed with self-image; they all search for acceptance and most importantly...love. Christina enters an empty office, waiting alone as time passes. She has been called to a meeting with a special counselor for an unspecified college to discuss the loss of a student at the hands of suicide. So begins the story of the four months prior, which concludes in tragedy. The story follows Vincent and his quest for answers. He goes to a campus preacher known only as The Poet and asks of him... "What do you know about love Poet?" Vincent begins to tell his story, his own version of these months, and we meet our characters; lives interwoven in a cycle of friendship, love, and betrayal. We have Amanda, the object of Vincent's love, and the subject of the memory of the one extraordinary night they share together. However, Vincent awakens alone, without a note or an explanation. Confused, he goes to his friend Lawrence, who advises him to simply "walk away." Torn, and left without answers Vincent becomes cynical, disillusioned and depressed. However, just when he's at his worst, he meets Christina and as they begin to learn about each other, it seems as though everything is about to turn around. But the ghosts of Vincent's past haunt him one last time in the form of Amanda who reappears in Vincent's life again. Tugging at his heart and memory from a world nearly left behind, she forces him once again turn to his past. Torn between the two, Vincent will question everything he's always held sacred in order to find the truth that lays within himself. In the process, friendships will be shattered, dark pasts revealed, and the life of one taken by suicide.
