An international airport is an airport that offers customs and immigration facilities for passengers travelling between countries. International airports are typically larger than domestic airports and often feature longer runways and facilities to accommodate the heavier aircraft commonly used for international and intercontinental travel. International airports often also host domestic flights. Some, such as Frankfurt Airport in Germany are very large; others such as Fa'a'ā International Airport in Tahiti, are quite small.
Buildings, operations and management have become increasingly sophisticated since the mid 20th century, when international airports began to provide infrastructure for international civilian flights. Detailed technical standards have been developed to ensure safety and common coding systems implemented to provide global consistency. The physical structures that serve millions of individual passengers and flights are among the most complex and interconnected in the world. By the second decade of the 21st century, there were over 1,200 international airports and almost two billion international passengers along with 50 million metric tonnes of cargo were passing through them annually.
Philadelphia International Airport (IATA: PHL, ICAO: KPHL, FAA LID: PHL), often referred to just by its IATA code PHL, is a major airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and is the largest airport in the Delaware Valley region and in the state. The airport is a major international hub for American Airlines and a regional cargo hub for UPS Airlines. The airport has service to destinations in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. Most of the airport property is located in Philadelphia proper. The international terminal and the western end of the airfield are located in Tinicum Township, Delaware County.
Starting in 1925 the Pennsylvania National Guard used the PHL site (known as Hog Island) as a training airfield. The site was dedicated as the "Philadelphia Municipal Airport" by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, but it had no proper terminal building until 1940; airlines used the airfield (at 39°55′48″N 75°04′41″W / 39.930°N 75.078°W / 39.930; -75.078) in nearby Camden, New Jersey. Once Philadelphia's terminal was completed (on the east side of the field) American, Eastern, TWA and United began flights.
Philadelphia International Records (PIR) is an American record label based in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1971 by the writer-producer duo, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, along with their long time collaborator Thom Bell. It was famous for showcasing the Philadelphia soul music genre (also known as Philly soul) that was founded on the gospel, doo-wop, and soul music of the time. This Philly Soul sound later became a prominent and distinct era within R&B itself. During the 1970s the label released a string of worldwide hits which emphasized lavish orchestral instrumentation, heavy bass, and driving percussion. Some of their most popular and best selling acts included The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, MFSB, Billy Paul, and Lou Rawls. Between 1971 and the early 80s, the label sold over 170 gold and platinum records. Philadelphia International Records has been mostly defunct since 1987, and finally shut down in 2001. As of 2007, Sony Music Entertainment owns all rights to the Philadelphia International Records music catalogue.
Philadelphia (/ˌfɪləˈdɛlfiə/) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the fifth-most-populous in the United States, with an estimated population in 2014 of 1,560,297. In the Northeastern United States, at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill River, Philadelphia is the economic and cultural anchor of the Delaware Valley, a metropolitan area home to 7.2 million people and the eighth-largest combined statistical area in the United States.
In 1682, William Penn founded the city to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony. Philadelphia played an instrumental role in the American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States, who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution in 1787. Philadelphia was one of the nation's capitals in the Revolutionary War, and served as temporary U.S. capital while Washington, D.C., was under construction. In the 19th century, Philadelphia became a major industrial center and railroad hub that grew from an influx of European immigrants. It became a prime destination for African-Americans in the Great Migration and surpassed two million occupants by 1950.
An airport is an aerodrome with facilities for flights to take off and land. Airports often have facilities to store and maintain aircraft, and a control tower. An airport consists of a landing area, which comprises an aerially accessible open space including at least one operationally active surface such as a runway for a plane to take off or a helipad, and often includes adjacent utility buildings such as control towers, hangars and terminals. Larger airports may have fixed base operator services, airport aprons, air traffic control centres, passenger facilities such as restaurants and lounges, and emergency services.
An airport with a helipad for rotorcraft but no runway is called a heliport. An airport for use by seaplanes and amphibious aircraft is called a seaplane base. Such a base typically includes a stretch of open water for takeoffs and landings, and seaplane docks for tying-up.
An international airport has additional facilities for customs and immigration.
In warfare, airports can become the focus of intense fighting, for example the Battle of Tripoli Airport or the Battle for Donetsk Airport, both taking place in 2014. An airport primarily for military use is called an airbase or air station.

Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday July 23, 2016 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers only one part of a nearly eight hour visit to Philadelphia International Airport, with traffic utilizing the 27s and 35. Departures from 27L are featured here (though a few 27R arrivals are seen in the beginning), with video shot between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. The goal of this trip was to get a feel for a new video camera that was purchased to replace the previous one that finally failed at an airshow in June. There isn't too much in this video that is out of the ordinary other than the PSA retrojet and several business jets that departed PHL in that time frame. After a 10 1/2 hour flight from Athens International Airport, I was finally able to record the final approach on PHL. In my opinion, this video provides a great view of Philadelphia and a few of its notable areas such as the Naval Shipyard and the Sports Complex. I hope you enjoy! Additional Info: -Airline: US Airways -Aircraft: Airbus A330-200 -Time of Arrival: ~3:00 PM (15:00)
For a full list of my airport tour and visit videos, visit https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYtyZPMUWeI9041CFmsThscnubE7A1rNE . (Airport Tour #3) Here's a brief three-minute tour of Philadelphia International Airport. You'll definitely see the presence of U.S. Airways, which has Philadelphia as its third-largest hub. (Presumably it would remain a hub after U.S. Airways and American Airlines merge.) I honestly didn't think videos like this would be pretty popular, but people seemed to enjoy my Dulles and Denver airport vids, so I thought I would put this up also. Hopefully I'll also upload video of Washington National Airport and Burlington International Airport soon, which I've traveled through quite a lot.

Landing on KPHL Runway 35 in a Diamond DA42-VI twin-engined diesel aircraft on November 27, 2015. Scenic view coming over the Delaware River from New Jersey while on short final; Philadelphia skyline can be seen briefly on the right. Reported winds were 11 knot direct crosswind from the left. Runway 35 has no PAPI/VASI lights for guidance. iPhone 6 video from back seat.
Unlike my previous video, this one follows a full and complete tour of Philly International Airport; including the long and complex ramps between Interstate 95 and the main terminals of Philadelphia International Airport in South Philadelphia. This also includes the roads you'd use to get to the cell phone waiting lot as well as where you'd go if you're picking someone up from the airport
Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Wednesday December 9, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers the first part of a six and a half hour visit to Philadelphia International Airport, with traffic utilizing Runways 8, 9L, 9R, and 17, switching over to using the 27s. Most of the video seen here covers departures from Runway 9L followed by Runway 27R arrivals and 27L departures. The goal of the trip was to catch the additional UPS traffic that is the norm for between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day due to what the local spotters call the "Christmas cargo rush". UPS also, from time to time, leases additional aircraft from other cargo airlines to assist with their airlift; unfortunately, none came in du...

Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Friday July 3, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers the third part of a very long visit to Philadelphia International Airport. All of the movements here feature arrivals to Runway 9R and includes only one special aircraft from American but also a variety of aircraft from Southwest Airlines' fleet. The majority of the European arrivals are seen here as well as well and this video covers approximately 90% of the movements shot in the five hours of being at this spot. Video featured here covers 12:39 PM to 5:25 PM. Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Wednesday July 22, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers the first part of a very long visit to Philadelphia International Airport. All movements featured here are arrivals to Runway 27R and departures from Runway 27L. While there weren't many specials in this video, the focus of the Wednesday trip to PHL was to catch as many cargo movements as possible. Several MD-11s, A300s, 767s, and a DC-10 can be seen in this video along with many other American (and US Airways), Delta, Southwest, and United aircraft. Video featured here covers 7:35 AM to 11:40 AM. You can find thousands of additional videos and so much more aviation- and airshow-related content at ZINGER A...

Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday December 28, 2013 http://www.zingeraviation.com On a somewhat warm (but becoming colder), winter afternoon, Philadelphia International Airport was running operations on Runways 26, 27L, 27R, and 35. Included in this video are about 95% of all operations utilizing arrivals onto Runway 27R shot between 3:45 PM and 5:10 PM. This was a last-minute decision as there was a special arrival that was slated to come in that day, and this video does show that arrival (I won't say where!) - it is the first time I have ever seen one of these planes and it is something rarely seen around this part of the country. Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday April 4, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers a spotting trip to Philadelphia International Airport, when PHL was utilizing operations on the 27s. This was a trip that features two Southwest Airlines specials, which can be seen in this video and were the highlight of the day. It was a cold and windy day at PHL and I was surprised that even though the winds were as high as they were, not as much traffic went onto Runway 35 as I had thought. All video seen here was shot between 9:50 AM and 4:25 PM. I apologize for the very short black or white blips that may or may not appear in the video, as they are caused by dropped frames. Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday January 2, 2016 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers a nearly eight hour visit to Philadelphia International Airport, with traffic utilizing the 27s and 26 and 35. Departures from 27L and arrivals to 27R are featured here, with video shot between 7:55 AM and 11:48 AM. Normally I would not venture out to PHL early, but the day after New Year's Day 2016 was clearly an exception, as Qatar Airways had previously announced they would fly the Airbus A350-900XWB daily on flight 727/728 beginning on January 1, and this would be the second day of revenue passenger flight to North America utilizing the A350, which is Airbus' response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday January 17, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers an entire day of a spotting trip to Philadelphia International Airport, when PHL was utilizing operations on the 9s for my first spotting trip in 2015. This was a trip with the goal to get as much Boeing 767-200 operations as possible, seeing as of the date of the video, the 767 would be gone from the US Airways fleet four weeks later. The first two hours of my visit to PHL featured arrivals to 9R and 35 and departures from 9L and 8, with the airport switching to the 27s for the remainder of the day. Several specials were observed arriving and departing that day, and each one that was seen is caught in thi...
Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday August 1, 2015 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers almost a four and a half hour visit to Philadelphia International Airport. The majority of the video covers arrivals to 27R with the last part covering departures from 27L. The primary purpose of this trip was to catch the first day of operations for Lufthansa's 747-400, which is the first time in YEARS since Lufthansa brought in a 747 for regular service on flight 426/427. For about two weeks in August 2015, Lufthansa will be sending the 747-400 on this flight, which normally sees any of the A330-300, A340-300, or A340-600. Not all arrivals are seen in this time frame, as I did spend use a bunch of arrival...
Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday March 26, 2016 http://www.zingeraviation.com This video covers only one part of a nearly eight hour visit to Philadelphia International Airport, with traffic utilizing the 9s and 8 and 35. Departures from 9L are featured here, with video shot between 8:55 AM and 11:55 AM. The goal of this trip was to film an hour or so of video and then photograph the rest of the day, and that was accomplished easily. With winds forecasted out of the NE, PHL was utilizing east operations, and it is rare to have easterly winds of any kind AND have clear skies, so this was a real treat. This video doesn't have too many specials in it (the America West retro was in and out of PHL, and d...
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Fly away
From the weight of the world
On the ground
I'm international
But I don't know where to go
Hopefully where summer days
Can melt these winter bones
I'm international
And you're orbiting my brain
I'm reduced to writing nothing
All over napkins on the plane
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
Early warning all across the sky
Clouds are rolling in on your light
Any change from here would be
The wisest change of all
Any place from here up here
Would be the finest place to fall
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
I'm losing track of myself
On all the time zone lines
And if I daylight save
Do I jump ahead or fall behind?
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
It's easy to see
Clouds were built for dreams
Because nothing up there
Is as easy as it seems
I step out
And try to walk around
As I fall, I look up
And wonder why it let me down
I'm international
That's twice the speed of sound
I just hope I take off from here
Before I hit the ground
If I could get to heaven
By an airplane in the sky
We would always be in love
And we would always love to fly
Wide awake
I'm on a plane out of town
Taking pictures of myself
In the mirror on wall
Trying hard not to make my space
The loneliest place of all
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
You know, I know
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
And I'm fine 'cause I know
Any plane I ride
Can fly me home
You know, I know
