Due to a growing trend of users using linux, using open source software and then spitting in the faces of the developers, the community as a whole, the open source ecosystem, how it works and what this side of the fence stands for in comparison to the proprietary Microsoft windows operating system and proprietary software world.... I think we need to take a step back, get educated, acknowledge and appreciate how this wonderful operating system and open source ecosystem came into existence. Many of us take the history for granted and make uninformed criticisms with the mind set of a paying Microsoft Windows customer wanting the SAME experience, SAME technical direction and vision with an ideology that is thankfully completely and utterly incompatible with this view. If you don't like it or appreciate the diversity within the open source world then ask for a fucking refund and go back to using Windows, proprietary and adaware infected free software you whiny pathetic cunts. Enjoy

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.
A report by the Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.
The free software movement was launched in 1983. In 1998, a group of individuals advocated that the term free software should be replaced by open source software (OSS) as an expression which is less ambiguous and more comfortable for the corporate world. Software developers may want to publish their software with an open source license, so that anybody may also develop the same software or understand its internal functioning. With open source software, generally anyone is allowed to create modifications of it, port it to new operating systems and processor architectures, share it with others or, in some cases, market it. Scholars Casson and Ryan have pointed out several policy-based reasons for adoption of open source, in particular, the heightened value proposition from open source (when compared to most proprietary formats) in the following categories:

Abstract: Inselect is an open-source application for Mac and Windows that can greatly simplify the challenges of dealing with images generated by museum digitization programmes.
The software combines image processing, barcode reading, batch processing and validation of user-defined metadata to offer a high level of automation. Inselect has been used by curators and digitizers within the Natural History Museum, London, to process in excess of 100,000 specimens so far and is presently being used by several institutions on pinned insects, microscope slides, paleontological specimens, dried sponges and other specimen types.
This webinar will give an overview of the software, how it can be integrated into existing workflows and a discussion of areas for development and possible future applications. The talk will be of interest to curators, digitizers and IT staff. Inselect is under active development - we are very excited to engage with the community and receive feedback and ideas.

"The internet has become an integral part of our lives because it is interactive. That means people are senders of information, rather than simply passive receivers of 'old' media. Most importantly of all, we can talk to each other without gatekeepers or editors. This offers exciting possibilities for new social networks, which are enabled - but not determined - by digital technology.
In the software industry, the open source movement emphasises collective cooperation over private ownership. This radical idea may provide the biggest challenge to the dominance of Microsoft. Open source enthusiasts have found a more efficient way of working by pooling their knowledge to encourage innovation.
All this is happening at a time when participation in mainstream electoral politics is declining in many Western countries, including the US and Britain. Our democracies are increasingly resembling old media, with fewer real opportunities for interaction.
What, asks Douglas Rushkoff in this original essay for Demos, would happen if the 'source code' of our democratic systems was opened up to the people they are meant to serve? 'An open source model for participatory, bottom-up and emergent policy will force us to confront the issues of our time,' he answers.
That's a profound thought at a time when governments are recognising the limits of centralised political institutions. The open source community recognises that solutions to problems emerge from the interaction and participation of lots of people, not by central planning.
Rushkoff challenges us all to participate in the redesign of political institutions in a way which enables new solutions to social problems to emerge as the result of millions interactions. In this way, online communication may indeed be able to change offline politics."

Everyday objects are becoming smarter. In ten years’ time, every piece of clothing you own, every piece of jewellery you wear, and every thing you carry with you will be measuring, weighing and calculating your life. In ten years, the world — your world — will be full of sensors.
The problem? The things are becoming smarter, but they’re also becoming selfish. Your lightbulbs aren’t talking to your media centre, your media centre isn’t talking to your blinds, and nobody is talking to the thermostat. Instead of talking to each other, everything is talking to you—you’ve ended up as a mechanical turk inside someone else’s software.
That situation can’t continue, we need to fix the Internet of Things. As our computing continues its diffusion out into the environment we need our things to work together. The things have to become not just smarter, but more co-operative, they need to become anticipatory rather than reactive.

This week’s featured interview is with Rift.io where we discuss the use of open-source NFV for management and network orchestration. But first let’s take a look at some top headlines from across the space over the past week.
AT&T; continues to tout the abilities of its enhanced control, orchestration, management and policy project, with the latest link connected to policy management. Jen Yates, assistant VP at AT&T; Labs, explained in a recent blog post that one of the goals for ECOMP is to provide for the “design, creation and lifecycle management of virtualized network functions” in a “flexible, dynamic, policy driven manner” allowing users to “dynamically control ECOMP’s behavior without changing the system software.”
A more specific goal of the platform is automating the lifecycle of network-based services using control loops, which are designed to define how virtual machine, VNF and service impairments are controlled. AT&T; also noted policies are set to control aspects of ECOMP behavior, including service design, VNF change management and management of the behavior of ECOMP components; with the ECOMP policy framework including creation, evaluation, decision distribution and validation.
AT&T; unveiled the ECOMP initiative earlier this year, which it said was designed to automate network services and infrastructure running in a cloud environment. The carrier explained it had been working on ECOMP for nearly two years, tackling the project due to a lack of guidance for NFV and SDN deployments in a wide area network environment.
A recent report from Technology Business Research predicts global enterprises are on pace to spend $12 billion on SDN by 2020. Despite claims enterprises are still in the early phases of trialing SDN equipment, the report forecasts a 70.2% compound annual growth rate in enterprise-related SDN revenues between 2015 and 2020, with a majority of spend on infrastructure and “displacing legacy technologies.”
However, to reach this growth, TBR states vendors will need to be more proactive in helping enterprises move beyond legacy business practices. TBR sees further challenges for hardware-centric vendors still grappling with new business and operational models.
The research firm noted vendors like Cisco will likely see increased competition from vendors moving aggressively towards software-infused white boxes, opening up the opportunity for strategic alliances as SDN vendors look to bring new products to market. Those alliances are expected in “strategic areas” including hyperconverged platforms and security, with SDN partnerships also set to open up new revenue streams for vendors able to serve broader user cases.
Of course, vendor mindsets will also need to change in terms of working with rivals to further the SDN market. TBR noted progress has been made by various standards bodies to lessen the barriers to these partnerships based on the use of open source platforms, but vendors will need to be open to such initiatives if they want to benefit from the market.
For this week’s featured interview, we speak with Vin Spinelli, SVP global sales, marketing and business development at Rift.io, to discuss the use of open source NFV for management and network orchestration. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute recently tapped code base from Rift.io for the first release of its open source MANO specifications.
Before diving into the topic, Spinelli provided a brief overview of the company as well as its view on the current development and deployment pace of NFV platforms.
