Television pictures showed
F16 fighter jets flying close to the border of Turkey and Northern Iraq on Tuesday, as tensions in the region continues to mount.
Residents in the town of Yuksekova stared into the sky as the F16s roared overhead.
Yuksekova is located in the far reaches of Turkey - straddling
Iran and Northern Iraq - some twenty kilometres (12 miles) from the Iraqi border.
Military activity has been ongoing for the past week along the border as Turkey remains determined to root out Kurdish militants that have attacked and ambushed its forces in recent weeks.
Elsewhere, Turkish soldiers detected a landmine on a main highway in the south-eastern province of
Hakkari, the military said on Wednesday.
The soldiers were conducting a routine de-mining operation in the area, when they found the mine on the busy highway linking the towns of Yuksekova and Van.
The military said they believe the mine was placed by Kurdish
Worker's Party, also known as PKK, separatists.
Soldiers sealed off the area and called in de-mining experts who promptly detonated the mine.
Turkish soldiers perform routine sweeps for mines in the sensitive border areas - particularly amid heightened tensions between the
Turkish military and Kurdish rebels.
Skorsky helicopters could be seen taking off and landing from Diyarbakir military base.
On the political level,
Iraq's foreign minister said on Wednesday that his government "is ready to actively cooperate with Turkey and to seek practical measures" to prevent Kurdish rebels from working from Iraqi territories to hurt Turkey and its interests.
Hoshyar Zebari made the comment at a joint news conference in
Baghdad after meeting with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki.
