These old boats contain asbestos which hastens the proliferation of the water hyacinth. The latter constitutes a major obstacle for fishermen.
The water hyacinth also causes floods as it forms a kind of barrier on the river. Many associations call for the boycott of fish from Wouri river. Laywer Alice Nkom has founded a national movement aiming to save that threatened river.
Nkom intends to organize series of demonstrations through the country to bring authorities, the civil society and the users to join her combat.
The Wouri river is the principal sea route and a door into the whole central Africa region.

The Wouri (also Vouri or Vuri) is a river in Cameroon. The river is formed at the confluence of the rivers Nkam and Makombé, 32 km (20 mi) northeast of the city of Yabassi. The Wouri then flows about 160 km (99 mi) southeast to the Wouri estuary at Douala, the chief port and industrial city in the southwestern part of Cameroon on the Gulf of Guinea. The river is navigable about 64 km (40 mi) upriver from Douala.
The Portuguese navigator and explorer Fernão do Pó or Fernando Poo, is believed to be the first European to explore the estuary of the Wouri, around the year 1472. The explorers noted an abundance of the mud lobster Lepidophthalmus turneranus in the Wouri River and named it Rio dos Camarões, Portuguese for River of Prawns, and the phrase from which Cameroon is derived.
In the 1950s, during the colonial period, the French built a bridge across the river, which connects Douala with the city of Bonabéri across the river. The bridge is now of great economic importance to western Cameroon, carrying auto, truck, and train traffic. Since 2004 the bridge has been undergoing a major rehabilitation.

Paul Biya (born Paul Barthélemy Biya'a bi Mvondo, 13 February 1933) is a Cameroonian politician who has been the President of Cameroon since 6 November 1982. A native of Cameroon's south, Biya rose rapidly as a bureaucrat under President Ahmadou Ahidjo in the 1960s, serving as Secretary-General of the Presidency from 1968 to 1975 and then as Prime Minister of Cameroon from 1975 to 1982. He succeeded Ahidjo as President upon the latter's surprise resignation in 1982 and consolidated power in a 1983–1984 power struggle with his predecessor.
Biya introduced political reforms within the context of a single-party system in the 1980s. Under pressure, he accepted the introduction of multiparty politics in the early 1990s. He narrowly won the 1992 presidential election with 40% of the plural, single-ballot vote and was re-elected by large margins in 1997, 2004, and 2011. Opposition politicians and Western governments have alleged voting irregularities and fraud on each of these occasions.
Biya has maintained Cameroon's close relationship with France, Cameroon's former colonial ruler.

Today I travelled from Buey, Cameroon to Douala, Cameroon which is the industrial power in Cameroon. I hadn't exactly heard too many pleasant things about Douala so I really wasn't expecting much. However, I ended up really enjoying Douala, especially the food or the city. There is a massive expat community in Douala, and I think maybe I just needed a few of those comforts from home at this point in my travels after the crash, Nigeria, and malaria of late... it's been a tough couple weeks. Anyways, after ice cream and a couple meals in Douala, I decide to only spend one night, and tomorrow I'll head off to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon. Stay tuned. Dominique Bela, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Douala, Cameroon (22 October 2008) Due to the rising of price of drinks, consumers are turning to traditional drinks, especially the "Matango" palm wine. Hundreds of gallons of this precious juice are collected every day and sold on the market. The palm wine is a speciality of the central provinces and those in the South and Littoral areas. The reality today is that the consumers are increasingly fond of delicacies of this beverage. In Douala, Matango pubs mushroom and compete in all the corners of the city. The phenomenon also is noted in the capital Yaounde. Matango is well appreciated for its savour, and its affordable price: 100f CFA the litre. This video shows how the Matango comes out of the Palm Tree. -

Hundreds of gallons of this precious juice are collected every day and sold on the market. The palm wine is a speciality of the central provinces and those in the South and Littoral areas.
The reality today is that the consumers are increasingly fond of delicacies of this beverage. In Douala, Matango pubs mushroom and compete in all the corners of the city. The phenomenon also is noted in the capital Yaounde. Matango is well appreciated for its savour, and its affordable price: 100f CFA the litre.
