Around one billion people struggle with stress-related illness globally - and that figure is rising. What protects those with good mental health? Is their resilience innate? Or is the ability to withstand chronic stress and crisis something that can be learned?
In the search for answers, the film visits some of the leading figures in resilience research. The filmmakers also interview epigeneticists and neuroscientists. In the largest European resilience center in Mainz, Germany, researchers conduct a long-term study to explore the mechanisms deployed by people who enjoy good mental health despite stress and crisis. In southern France, the film meets Boris Cyrulnik, a pioneer of resilience research. His credo: when it comes to resilient behavior, it’s not just down to us - society and politics also have a responsibility to create appropriate conditions for stable psychological health. And the film tells the moving story of two families united by tragedy: following the violent death of their two sons, who were friends, they struggle to find their way back to some semblance of normal life.
Our experiences, our environment and our genes - all influence our powers of mental resilience. Resilience isn’t a magic word or a promise of happiness, but a life-long learning process.

This is episode 2 of a 4-part special series on mental health with Dr. Paul Conti, M.D., a Stanford and Harvard-trained psychiatrist currently running a clinical practice, the Pacific Premiere Group. Dr. Conti explains specific tools for how to overcome life’s challenges using a framework of self-inquiry that explores all the key elements of self, including defense mechanisms, behaviors, self-awareness and attention. We also discuss our internal driving forces, how to align them and ultimately, how to cultivate a powerful “generative drive” of positive, aspirational pursuits. Dr. Conti also explains how to adjust your internal narratives, reduce self-limiting concepts, overcome intrusive thoughts, and how certain defense mechanisms, such as “acting out” or narcissism, show up in ourselves and others. The next episode in this special series explores how to build healthy relationships with others.

[Singapore Parliament] Strengthening Mental Health Support (Nadia Ahmad Samdin)
I am very passionate about mental health in Singapore, and firmly believe that Singapore should take more proactive measures to become a society that is better equipped to address mental health concerns.
During this parliament sitting, I emphasised the pressing nature of this mission. I called for improved access to and affordability of mental health services, and I suggested a collaboration between the government and the private sector to encourage the development of more affordable mental health insurance options.
I also stressed upon the importance of creating a more inclusive society that embraces individuals dealing with mental health challenges, especially with regards to equal opportunities for jobs. I also raised the question of how we can redesign social support programs to off...

Shocking Video: Sparks Fly as Officers Enter HDB Flat in Singapore
Recently, a video surfaced on TikTok capturing a rather intense moment involving law enforcement in Singapore. The footage shows officers sawing through a metal gate to gain entry into a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat located at Block 57 Lengkok Bahru. Sparks fly as they work to breach the gate, eventually gaining access to the unit.
Now, this incident took place on April 17th, around 8 a.m. at Block 57 Lengkok Bahru. It all started when the Singapore Police Force received a call for assistance at 7:50 a.m. on the same day. Upon arrival, officers were met with a concerning situation: a 59-year-old man had barricaded himself inside his residential unit.
Recognizing the potential danger posed by the situation, the police quickly mobilized resources to address it. Teams from the S...

Today, we delve into the recent debates surrounding proposed amendments to Singapore's Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act (MHCTA). Ms. He Ting Ru, a Member of Parliament for Sengkang GRC, expressed reservations regarding the potential consequences of these amendments. Her concerns were met with reassurances from Ms. Josephine Teo, the Second Minister for Home Affairs (MHA), who emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding the rights of individuals with mental health conditions while ensuring public safety.
The proposed amendments to the MHCTA aim to empower the police to apprehend individuals with mental health conditions deemed hazardous to themselves or others. This amendment grants the police the authority to facilitate the transfer of these individuals for medical treatment, rather than arresting them, thus avoiding unnecessary incarceration.
Ms. He raised valid concerns during the parliamentary debate, particularly regarding the threshold for apprehension under the amended MHCTA. She highlighted the shift from a condition of "reasonably imminent risk" to one of "reasonable likelihood," expressing worries about the potential stigma against individuals with mental health conditions.
She also sought clarification on the recourse available to individuals who believe they have been wrongly detained or subjected to excessive force or trauma. Her concerns were rooted in a recent High Court judgment, notably the Mah Kiat Seng case, where discrepancies were found between police statements, evidence, and medical reports.
In response to Ms. He's concerns, Ms. Teo reiterated the government's commitment to destigmatizing mental health conditions and ensuring the well-being of individuals with mental health issues. She clarified that police involvement under the MHCTA is aimed at preventing harm and facilitating medical assessment, rather than punitive measures.
Ms. Teo also addressed concerns about police conduct, emphasizing accountability measures such as the use of body-worn cameras by ground response force officers. She assured that any misconduct or abuse of power would be met with appropriate disciplinary action, including criminal prosecution if warranted.
The debate underscores the delicate balance between public safety and the rights of individuals with mental health conditions. While the amendments aim to enhance public safety, it's crucial to ensure that safeguards are in place to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, including those with mental health issues.

In 2020, the incidence of suicide among those aged 10 to 19 jumped 37.5% from the year before, as Singapore recorded its highest number of deaths by suicide since 2012. A study published in the ASEAN Journal of Psychiatry also revealed that between 2013 and 2018, the number of youths aged 10-24 diagnosed with depression increased four fold - a more rapid increase than other age groups.
Is Generation Z really less resilient than baby boomers, Gen Xers or millennials? How does growing up with social media affect their self-worth and self-image? What makes the teenage brain more susceptible to irrational thoughts and decisions?
CNA Insider reaches out to youths grappling with mental health who share candidly about their struggles with anxiety, depression, self-harm and trauma.
This two-part documentary special explores why mental health problems commonly occur in young people, and why the journey of finding help and healing may not be easy.

Joined by our partner - HealthTEC Consortium, we will bring together notable industry leaders to discuss the state of mental health in Singapore and the technological innovations and efforts to raise mental health awareness. The speakers will also share their insights on how to increase access to quality mental health care and effective treatments, taking into account the pre and post COVID-19 mental health landscape.

I also raised the question of how we can redesign social support programs to offer more tailored assistance to those facing mental health issues.
Additionally, I expressed my concerns about gig workers in the entertainment industry, questioning when they can safely return to work as COVID-19 transitions into an endemic phase.
These issues are of utmost importance, and I am fully committed to working towards a more mentally healthy and inclusive society for all Singaporean citizens.
Sitting: March 2022

Teams from the Special Operations Command, Crisis Negotiation Unit, and Singapore Civil Defence Force were deployed to the scene, highlighting the coordinated response to such incidents in Singapore.
After hours of careful assessment and negotiation, the authorities managed to breach the unit and gain entry at approximately 10:50 a.m. Importantly, no injuries were reported during the operation, which is a testament to the professionalism and restraint exercised by the law enforcement personnel involved.
Following the successful intervention, the focus shifted to addressing the underlying issues at hand. The 59-year-old man was apprehended under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008, underscoring the importance of mental health considerations in such cases. It's crucial to approach situations involving individuals in distress with empathy and understanding, prioritizing their well-being and safety.
But that's not all. In a concerning development, it was revealed that the man is currently under investigation by the Central Narcotics Bureau for a drug-related offense. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation, highlighting the interconnected nature of social issues such as mental health and substance abuse.
Now, let's take a moment to reflect on what we've discussed. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement when dealing with mental health crises. It also underscores the importance of community support and resources in addressing such issues proactively.

Deadliest Roads | Cameroon | Free Documentary
World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Cameroon 2015
Deadliest Roads - Suriname: https://youtu.be/Y-xc4S6l3z0
The bravest drivers in Cameroon are named the “Clandos”; the name comes from the word clandestine or illegal. They drive illegal taxis and are the only ones who are brave enough to navigate the country’s dangerous road networks, some of the worst on the African continent. Only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country’s inhabitants rely on the Clandos’ taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.

Cameroon: Anatomy of a Killing - BBC Africa Eye Documentary
In July 2018 a horrifying video began to circulate on social media. It shows two women and two young children being led away at gunpoint by a group of Cameroonian soldiers. The captives are blindfolded, forced to the ground, and shot 22 times.
The government of Cameroon initially dismissed the video as “fake news.” But #BBCAfricaEye, through forensic analysis of the footage, can prove exactly where this happened, when it happened, and who is responsible for the killings.
Warning: this video contains disturbing content.

I saw Cameroon for the first time...AND I HATED IT?
This is the last episode of the mini series about going to Cameroon. I know that a lot of you thought that I was overwhelmingly negative in my previous videos on Cameroon and that maybe I had malicious intent, that I wanted to misrepresent Cameroon, that I was biased or even brainwashed, so I want to take some time to reflect on some of the things I've said and maybe add a little bit of nuance where I was perhaps too harsh in my criticism. I also want to add a little bit about the perspective I've gained from this trip.
Check out the first two episode of the series:

One GoPro, one Land Cruiser and one Canadian, that sounds like the perfect mix. I started by going on top of the highest mountain in Yaoundé called Mont Fébé from where you get a beautiful view of the city.
From there, a quick stop at the first ever mall in Yaoundé which was very nice I have to say.
And this is where the adventure starts! I made my way to Parc de la Méfou which is a primate sanctuary about 90 minutes from Yaoundé city centre... DO NOT use Google Map to go there! It made me take the weirdest route but I have no regrets because I met some... interesting people to say the least. Once there I have the opportunity to see many apes, gorillas and so much more.
After a quick stop at the Reunification Monument I decided to go the the Hilton Hotel Yaounde for dinner because I heard that there is bats there at night!
Overall a great day of discovering Yaounde. I really hope to go back and visit the western part of Cameroon!
