High Court

High Court usually refers to the superior court (or supreme court) of a country or state. In some countries, it is the highest court (e.g. Australia). In others, it is positioned lower in the hierarchy of courts (e.g. in England & Wales).

Punjab and Haryana High Court

Punjab and Haryana High Court is a common High Court for both the states of Punjab and Haryana and Union territory of Chandigarh. It is situated at Chandigarh, the capital of the States of Punjab and Haryana. As of 21 March 2015, there is a sitting strength of 55 judges in the High Court, including 45 permanent and 10 additional judges. Another five permanent and three additional judges from this court have been transferred to different High Courts, one of whom (Hon'ble Mr. Justice Virender Singh) is serving as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

Earlier it was known as Lahore High Court, which was established on 21 March 1919. Jurisdiction of Lahore High Court covered undivided Punjab and Delhi having its seat at Lahore. After independence on 15 August 1947, a separate High Court of Punjab was created with its seat at Shimla under the Indian Independence Act 1947 which had jurisdiction over Punjab, Delhi and present Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. In 1966, after the reorganisation of the State of Punjab, the High Court was designated as the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, having its jurisdiction over Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh. The area of Delhi has been put under the Delhi High Court with its seat at New Delhi and Himachal Pradesh has its independent High Court at Shimla.

Haryana

Haryana is a state in North India, forming part of the larger Punjab region. It was carved out of the former state of East Punjab on 1 November 1966 on the basis of language distribution. The name Haryana is found in the works of the 12th century AD Apabhramsha writer Vibudh Shridhar (VS 1189–1230). It is bordered by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the north, and by Rajasthan to the west and south. The river Yamuna defines its eastern border with Uttar Pradesh. Haryana surrounds the country's capital Delhi on three sides, forming the northern, western and southern borders of Delhi. Consequently, a large area of south Haryana is included in the National Capital Region for purposes of planning for development.

Haryana is one of the wealthier states of India and had the second highest per capita income in the country at ₹119158 (US$1,800) in the year 2012–13 (See List of Indian states by GDP) and ₹132089 (US$1,900) in the year 2013–14 including the largest number of rural crorepatis in India. Haryana is also one of the most economically developed regions in South Asia and its agricultural and manufacturing industry has experienced sustained growth since the 1970s.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan is an Indian preacher, spiritual leader, and actor. He has been the head of the India-based socio-spiritual organisation Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) since 23 September 1990. DSS oversees several social programmes, such as a cleanliness campaigns, blood donation drives, tree planting, disaster relief, and support for transgender people, tribal communities, orphans, and rehabilitation of sex workers.

Early life

Ram Rahim was born to Naseeb Kaur and Maghar Singh on 15 August 1967, at Gurusar Modia village in Ganganagar district of Rajasthan. He was born in a Jat Sikh family.

On 23 September 1990, Shah Satnam held a satsang where he publicly conferred sainthood and succession of the spiritual leadership upon Gurmeet Ram Rahim. He is married and has three children. His son is married to the daughter of Harminder Singh Jassi, a former Indian National Congress MLA from Bathinda.

Education

Ram Rahim was educated in a school in his village of Sri Gurusar Modia. In early 2016, Ram Rahim received an honorary doctorate from World Records University in London for over 50 records of different kinds.

Punjab (region)

The Punjab (ⁱ/ˈpʌndʒɑːb/ or /ˈpʌndʒæb/), also spelled Panjab, panj-āb, "five rivers" (Punjabi: پنجاب (Shahmukhi), ਪੰਜਾਬ (Gurumukhi), Hindi: पंजाब (Devanagari)), is a geographical region in one of the northernmost parts of the Indian subcontinent or South Asia, comprising areas of eastern Pakistan and northern India.

It has been inhabited by Indus Valley Civilisation, Indo-Aryan peoples and has seen numerous invasions by the Achaemenid Empire, Greeks, Kushan Empire, Ghaznavids, Timurids, Mughals, Afghans, British and others. The people of the Punjab today are called Punjabis and their principal language is called Punjabi. The main religions of the Punjab region are Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism. Other religious groups are Christianity, Jainism and Buddhism.

In 1947, with the dissolution of British India, the region was partitioned between India and Pakistan.
In Pakistan, it includes the Punjab province, Islamabad, parts of Azad Kashmir (namely Bhimber and Mirpur) and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (namely Peshawar known in the Punjab region as Pishore).
