Quick (restaurant)

Quick Restaurants NV/Quick Restaurants SA was an original Belgian chain of hamburger fast food restaurants headquartered in Berchem, Antwerp, Belgium. Founded in 1971 by Belgian Baron François Vaxelaire, it is Europe's first and leading hamburger restaurant chain.

In recent years, its worldwide expansion has accelerated. Quick is similar in theme to McDonald's and Burger King. In 2007, it was taken over by the French government's investment holding company, CDC, which controls 94% of the shares as of November 2013 and was purchased by Burger King in February 2016.

History

The chain was first established in 1971 with two restaurants, by the Belgian Baron Vaxelaire (Chairman of GIB Group) one in Schoten, on the outskirts of Antwerp and another in Waterloo just south of Brussels. The first Quick opened in France was in Aix-en-Provence on July 19, 1980. By December 31, 2010, it operated over 400 restaurants in Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the French overseas departments or territories of Réunion, New Caledonia Guadeloupe and Martinique. 72% of these restaurants are operated as franchises.

Quick (German magazine)

Quick was a German-language weekly illustrated news magazine published from 25 April 1948 to 27 August 1992 in Hamburg, Germany.

History and profile

Quick was the first magazine published in Germany after the Second World War. The magazine was first published on 25 April 1948 and had an initial print run of 110,000 copies. It had its headquarters in Hamburg. The magazine was launched by the Bauer Media Group and was published on a weekly basis.

Traudl Junge, Adolf Hitler's secretary, for many years worked as a secretary for the chief editorial staff of Quick.

At one time one of the most important magazines in its class, it reached a peak circulation of 1.7 million copies in 1960. As attitudes towards sex changed, the magazine tried to adapt, including more coverage of sex and crime in the 1980s. This was not a success; advertising revenue fell by 50% and circulation to 700,000 between 1990 and the closing of the magazine in 1992. It ceased publication on 27 August 1992.

Simplified Cangjie

Simplified Cangjie, known as Quick (Chinese: 簡易) or Sucheng (Chinese: 速成) is a stroke based keyboard input method based on the Cangjie IME (倉頡輸入法) but simplfied with select lists. Unlike full Cangjie, the user enters only the first and last keystrokes used in the Cangjie system, and then chooses the desired character from a list of candidate Chinese characters that pops up. This method is popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Simplified Cangjie is one of the few input methods which has an IME pre-installed on Chinese-capable personal computers.

Performance and learning

Although described as having an easier learning curve with less errors, Simplified Cangjie users have slower typing speed compared to full Cangjie. The user must choose from a list of candidate characters, which can be compared to "hunt and peck" vs. ordinary touch typing. Because Simplified Cangjie does not promote the full sequence of keystrokes of standard Cangjie, it could leave simplified Cangjie users without knowledge of how to code a character without the disambiguation lists.

Maurice (emperor)

Maurice (Latin: Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus; Greek: Φλάβιος Μαυρίκιος Τιβέριος Αὔγουστος) (539 – 27 November 602) was Byzantine Emperor from 582 to 602.

A prominent general in his youth, Maurice fought with success against the Sassanid Persians. Once he became Emperor, he brought the war with Persia to a victorious conclusion: the Empire's eastern border in the Caucasus was vastly expanded and for the first time in nearly two centuries the Byzantines were no longer obliged to pay the Persians thousands of pounds of gold annually for peace.

Maurice campaigned extensively in the Balkans against the Avars – pushing them back across the Danube by 599. He also conducted campaigns across the Danube, the first Emperor to do so in over two hundred years. In the West, he established two large semi-autonomous provinces called exarchates, ruled by exarchs, or viceroys, of the emperor.

In Italy, Maurice established the Exarchate of Ravenna in 584, the first real effort by the Empire to halt the advance of the Lombards. With the creation of the Exarchate of Africa in 590, he further solidified the empire's hold on the western Mediterranean.

Maurice (novel)

Maurice is a novel by E. M. Forster. A tale of same-sex love in early 20th-century England, it follows Maurice Hall from his schooldays, through university and beyond. It was written in 1913–1914, and revised in 1932 and 1959–1960. Although it was shown to selected friends, such as Christopher Isherwood, it was only published in 1971 after Forster's death. Forster did not seek to publish it during his lifetime, believing it unpublishable during that period.

Forster was close friends with the poet Edward Carpenter, and upon visiting his Derbyshire home in 1912, was motivated to write Maurice. The relationship between Carpenter and his partner, George Merrill, was the inspiration for that between Maurice and Alec Scudder.

Forster resisted publication because of public and legal attitudes to same-sex love – a note found on the manuscript read: "Publishable, but worth it?". Forster was particularly keen that his novel should have a happy ending, but knew that this would make the book too controversial. However, by the time he died, British attitudes, and law, had changed.

Maurice (given name)

Maurice is a traditionally masculine given name. It originates as a French name derived from the Latin Mauritius or Mauricius and was subsequently used in other languages. Its popularity is due to Mauritius, a saint of the Theban Legion (died 287). Mauritius is otherwise attested as a given name of the Roman Empire period, in origin meaning "one from Mauritania", i.e. "the Moor".
