For nearly five decades, Gene Hackman was a staple of American cinema. During that time, the San Bernardino-born actor won four Golden Globes, two BAFTAs, and two Academy Awards while starring in classic films like Hoosiers, Unforgiven, and Get Shorty, to name just a very few. Since the early 2000s, however, we haven't seen or heard much from the accomplished actor and all-American tough guy. So what's Hackman been up to?

Gene Hackman made quite the name for himself starring in popular action, thriller, adventure, and drama films that are still considered to be classics today. It seemed like for the longest while, every film that he was a part of turned into gold. During the peak of his career, Hackman was one of the most in-demand actors in show business. And even though his acting career eventually started to slow down a bit, he still was almost exclusively given roles in substantial, well-written films. Whereas some actors eventually are downgraded to B-movie status, he never was. Filmmakers knew that if they were going to cast Hackman then it sure ought to be a decent project that they are working on. Perhaps the only exception to this rule was Hackman's final film credit.
Since shortly after the turn of the century, however, we haven't seen Hackman in pretty much anything. His last feature film was 2004's Welcome to Mooseport, but all of these years of retirement haven't dimmed his cultural presence. Hackman is still the all-American tough guy we all know and love. Watch this facts-filled video to see what he's been up to in recent years and discover what made him decide to retire from the film in the first place.
