Torphin is an almost entirely residential area in the south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland, with its name deriving from the nearby Torphin Hill. It lies just south of Juniper Green, on the opposite side of the Water of Leith, and sits both east and west of the Edinburgh City Bypass: the east side mostly comprises new-build houses; the west side is largely rural, sporting a small number of mid-20th Century bungalows and one of the city's many golf courses, Torphin Hill Golf Club.
Lothian Buses links the area to the city centre with the number 10 bus service during the day, and the N16 as a Night Service. Further services can be reached on the nearby Lanark Road to the north, or at Colinton to the north-east.
Torphin Hill itself, origin of the name of the suburb of Torphin, adjoins Warklaw Hill to the south-west. Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic tòrr fionn, which means "white tor".
The hill also gave its name to Torphin Hill Golf Club, which celebrated its centenary in 1995. The golf course, which actually lay on the southern slopes of Corby Hill and the eastern slope of Warklaw Hill, offered views over the city of Edinburgh and beyond. The club closed down at the start of 2014 after a prolonged decline in membership numbers.
The club, which was established in 1895, was unable to continue operating after seeing membership tumble from 500 to 200 in recent years. Finally closing in Dec 2013 this is what a golf course looks like after six months of neglect. Filmed June 2014

Last day of the summer holidays 2013, two old chums decided to go for a cycle up the Water of Leith to Balerno, and then to Harlaw Reservoir, and then back across the hills. Getting a wee bit lost saw us passing by 18 Torphin Road.

Antarctica: a remote and inhospitable land, designated only for purposes of peace and science. Prof Jo Arendt gives an informal talk about the delights and problems of travelling to, and living on, a base in this far-off continent. With plenty of anecdotes and photographs from her two trips to Antarctica (Halley base and 750S), Jo also discusses her research into the effects of the light environment on sleep and human rhythms, and how to optimise artificial light in the polar winter. Part of the Winter Shuffle 'The Science of Christmas' series in December 2013, supported by the Wellcome Trust. Camerawork and editing by Vin Shahrestani.
Newbattle Golf Club is home to a picturesque 18 hole course, lying by the side of the River Esk and filled with flora and fauna. Located near the town of Dalkeith in Midlothian, Newbattle is just a short drive from the centre of Edinburgh. The layout of the course, with its well-protected greens, offers a challenge to every golfer. There are four par 3 holes which collectively are amongst the toughest in the Lothians. The course is a 6025 yard par 69 and is renowned for the exceptional standards of its greens and fairways. Find out more: http://myde.st/13B8Bys
This is the B6255 that runs between Ingleton and Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Most often used as access to the Buttertubs Pass it is actually a far better driving road. Nice, open sightlines, good surface and long enough to really get a flow going. Equally good for big or small cars with big or small power, it has something for everyone. I do a lot of my rally car testing up here. This is a quick and dirty video I shot from a Porsche 944 - this is heading SW and starts just out of Hawes heading back towards Ingleton. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWeD7901HZA
What different thoughts and considerations go into hitting a tee shot from an elevated tee?
I got a friend named Whiskey Sam
He was my boonierat buddy for a year in Nam
He said is my country just a little off track
Took 'em twenty-five years to welcome me back
But, it's better than not coming back at all
Many a good man I saw fall
And even now, every time I dream
I hear the men and the monkeys in the jungle scream
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me , but they don't understand
And I got a woman who knows her man
Drive on, don't mean nothin', drive on
I remember one night, Tex and me
Rappelled in on a hot L.Z
We had our 16's on rock and roll
But, with all that fire, I was scared and cold
We were crazy, we were wild
And I have seen the tiger smile
I spit in a bamboo viper's face
And I'd be dead , but by God's grace
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me , but they don't understand
And I got a woman who knows her man
Drive on, don't mean nothin', drive on
It was a real slow walk in a real sad rain
And nobody tried to be John Wayne
I came home, but Tex did not
And I can't talk about the hit he got
I got a little limp now when I walk
Got a little tremolo when I talk
But my letter read from Whiskey Sam
You're a walkin' talkin' miracle from Vietnam
Drive on, it don't mean nothin'
My children love me , but they don't understand
And I got a woman who knows her man
