British DJ and musician Ashley Beedle has been on the scene for quite a while now, both as a solo artist and as a former member in famous underground groups such as X-Press 2—in fact, he's even referenced in Daft Punk's classic "Teachers". As you can imagine, his EB Mix of the Day reflects his status as a long-time dance head, and is packed with tracks new and old. It's not often that our MOTD's kick off with the King of Pop himself, but we can't think of a better way to start our day. Pop on those headphones and dig in!

Ashley Beedle
Ashley Beedle (born 25 November 1962, Hemel Hempstead, England) is a British music DJ, producer and remixer. People often confuse him for being of Asian origin, but his ethnicity is partly Barbadian.
Biography
Beedle first began DJing in the early 1980s but first began making a name for himself during the heyday of acid house. After hearing Norman Jay on KISS FM (a pirate radio station), he became more interested in deep disco. In the early 1990s, he teamed up with Rob Mello and John Howard to form the first incarnation of the Black Science Orchestra, who released several classic club hits in the 1990s ( "Where Were You?", "Strong", Philadelphia and the "New Jersey Deep").
While working with the Black Science Orchestra (whose debut full-length arrived late in 1994), Beedle also started a project with Dave Hill, Uschi Classen and Rocky & Diesel, known as The Ballistic Brothers. The resulting LP, 1995's London Hooligan Soul, was a major dance music hit.
Around the same time, he was active in the group X-Press 2, which consisted of Beedle, Rocky and Diesel and had club and chart action through the nineties and noughties with tracks such as Muzik Xpress, London Xpress and a number 2 in the national charts with the track Lazy, a collaboration with the Talking Heads' David Byrne. X-Press 2 also released two albums, Muzikisum and Makeshift Feelgood.

Four decades on and Azymuth has reached legendary status amongst fans worldwide and across the music industry thanks to the trio’s pioneering blend of traditional Brazilian jazz and proto funk fusion from the early 70’s right through to the present day.
In 1979 the band’s first Milestone Records release, ‘Light As A Feather’ quickly became one of the best-selling LPs of the year. Featuring the worldwide disco/fusion hit single ‘Jazz Carnival’ and going on to sell more than half a million copies internationally, the album stayed in the UK Top 20 for eight straight weeks.
An incredibly well thought out album both in pace, song selection and musicality, ‘Light As A Feather’ marked a maturing of the band as they began to rightfully utilise the studio as an instrument itself, embracing numerous mixing and recording techniques not yet common for the time as well as pioneering the use of the Big Muff and Dolby System to great effect. The end result is an album that endures to this day as a samba/jazz-funk masterpiece.

You know the old saying "never meet your heroes"? Most of the time I'd completely agree, but in the case of Mr Ashley Beedle... Nothing could be further off the mark. The man behind X-Press 2, Black Science Orchestra, The Ballistic Brothers, Delta House Of Funk, The Black Jazz Chronicles, Africans On Marz and The Jamayka Boys (phew!) stood over UK dance music during the 90's like a colossus. This year he's just released an album for K7!/Strut with Horace Andy and is applying the finishing touches on his new Mavis project with Darren Morris as well as releasing a new 12" on Untracked Recordings as Africans On Marz. This year he's just released an album for K7!/Strut with Horace Andy and is applying the finishing touches on his new Mavis project with Darren Morris as well as releasing a new 12" on Untracked Recordings as Africans On Marz. It's all go at Chateau Beedle in other words.

Many of these tunes are appearing on CD for the first time and, as usual, Ashley's superbly eclectic and wide-ranging taste in music has delivered a project which is jam-packed with innovation and experimentation. CD1 takes a trip through some early 1970's cult dance rock classics from Family, Ace, Cado Belle, Ruth Copeland and even the Fall before branching into some seriously rhythmic and percussive rare dance classics from Panama, Brainstorm, New York Port Authority, Los Africanos, the 8th Day, Bill Withers & Cymande. CD2 features some awe-inspiring selections from the Soul/Funk/Rare-Groove arena with Brainstorm, Holland-Dozier, Gene Chandler, Donna McGhee, Three Pieces, Switch, The Gap Band, Kyle Auldist, the Astra Nova Orchestra, Doris Duke and Heaven N' Hell to round off an incredible musical journey. Each and every tune has the usual sure-fire signatures of a top-notch Ashley Beedle re-edit and should easily follow the recent successes of Ashley's 12" releases, Yardism 1 & 2 (DJ magazine's Record of the Week for both releases).

Message In The Music: The Ashley Beedle Re-Edits must hold the world record for being the longest-ever time that a compilation has been in development! The project first began way back in November 2009 and has mutated every year since then, until we finally got the album that we wanted to release. Within the previous four years we have had to deal with missing master tapes, companies changing ownership, deals finishing etc, etc, so the track-listing has evolved organically, which was exactly right for this project.
Many of these tunes are appearing on CD for the first time and, as usual, Ashley's superbly eclectic and wide-ranging taste in music has delivered a project which is jam-packed with innovation and experimentation. CD1 takes a trip through some early 1970's cult dance rock classics from Family, Ace, Cado Belle, Ruth Copeland and even the Fall before branching into some seriously rhythmic and percussive rare dance classics from Panama, Brainstorm, New York Port Authority, Los Africanos, the 8th Day, Bill Withers & Cymande. CD2 features some awe-inspiring selections from the Soul/Funk/Rare-Groove arena with Brainstorm, Holland-Dozier, Gene Chandler, Donna McGhee, Three Pieces, Switch, The Gap Band, Kyle Auldist, the Astra Nova Orchestra, Doris Duke and Heaven N' Hell to round off an incredible musical journey. Each and every tune has the usual sure-fire signatures of a top-notch Ashley Beedle re-edit and should easily follow the recent successes of Ashley's 12" releases, Yardism 1 & 2 (DJ magazine's Record of the Week for both releases).
Also included within the package, will a bonus DVD featuring a full Ashley Beedle interview about the making of Message In The Music with a track-by-track analysis with DJ Magazine's Ben Murphy grilling Ashley about his studio work and how he became one of the worlds' foremost Re-Edit experts. Plus we also include a 20 page booklet with sleeve notes by Ben Murphy and exclusive pics of Ashley from a brand new session.
