Lipscani is a street and a district of Bucharest, Romania, which from middle age to early 19th century was the most important commercial area of the city and the whole country.

But the area of Bucharest described by the river to the south, Calea Victoriei to the west, Brătianu to the east and Regina Elisabeta to the north is more or less all thats left of pre-World War II Bucharest. What the war didnt destroy (and it destroyed a fair bit: allied bombing was fierce during the early part of 1944) communism did, most notably in the form of the grandiose Civic Centre project that saw almost a fifth of the total area of the city flattened to make way for Bulevardul Unirii and Casa Poporului. Streets took on the names of the guilds similar to other medieval towns. There would be a street of blacksmiths, furriers, etc. and this mix is reflected in the different architectural styles; everything from Baroque to Art Nouveau.
Between the remains of the Old Princely Court built in the 15th century by Vlad Tepes (also known as Vlad Dracula - you know who he is thanks to Bram Stoker), Manuc's Inn and the Beer Cart Restaurant built in 1879, there is plenty to see. Lipscani has to be even more beautiful and enjoyable in the summer with its many restaurants and outdoor tables.

Lipscani
Lipscani is a street and a district of Bucharest, Romania, which from middle age to early 19th century was the most important commercial area of the city and the whole Wallachia. It is located near the ruins of the old Princely Court built by Vlad III the Impaler.
History
It was named after Leipzig (Lipsca in 17th century Romanian), as that was the origin of many of the wares that could be found on the main street. The word lipscan (singular of lipscani) meant trader who brought his wares from Western Europe.
All trades were found in the area, including goldsmiths, hatters, shoemakers, tanners, saddlemakers, etc., many guilds (or isnafuri) having their own street: even nowadays, the nearby streets bear the name of a trade (Blănari = Furriers street, Șelari = Saddlemakers street, etc.).
During the Communist period, the whole area was scheduled to be demolished, but this never came to fruition. The district became neglected, but nowadays is the most attractive area for tourists of all Bucharest. As of 2013, many of the buildings were restored. In the early 21st century, much of the district has been transformed into a pedestrian zone.

Past the History Museum (Muzeul National de Istorie) and the CEC (Palatul Casei de Economii si Consemnaţiuni) building into Stavropoleos Church (Biserica Stavropoleos) and St. Dumitru Church (Biserica Sf. Dumitru) to Piaţa Revoluţiei where most of the action took place during Romanias revolution of 1989. Past Creţulescu Church (Biserica Creţulescu) and the National Art Museum (MNAR; Muzeul National de Arta) to the Atheneum (Ateneul Român) and further afield past the Arcul de Triumf to the Village Museum.

The Old City is situated near Kilometer 0 of the city and is the area gathering the streets: Lipscani, Selari, Covaci, Doamnei, Stavropoleos, Franceza, Sepcari. Bucharest Old City is housing famous landmarks: the Royal Court, Stavropoleos Church, Church of Saint Anthony, Manuc's Inn, Linden Inn, National Bank of Romania, Caru' cu Bere, which are all very popular among tourists and locals.
During the last 10 years, the City Hall put a lot of effort in restauring the heart of the city and the Old City is beginning to look at its best. Today the Old City gathers more than 100 restaurants, 100 bars and pubs, hotels, shopping centers, galleries, theathers, street perfomers, flee markets and is constantly evolving and growing. It's largely accepted as one of Europe's best and attractive Old Towns and one of Romania's top city tourist destination!
We started a journey to create a spectacular video about Bucharest Old City and we want to share this new and amazing part of Bucharest with the world. Please help us complete this journey and share with the rest that the Old City is now a New City! Thank you!
