A Doll's House, written two years after The Pillars of Society, was the first of Ibsen's plays to create a sensation and is now perhaps his most famous play, and required reading in many secondary schools and universities. The play was highly controversial when first published, as it is sharply critical of 19th Century marriage norms. It follows the formula of well-made play up until the final act, when it breaks convention by ending with a discussion, not an unravelling. Here's the wonderful play The Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen starring Leo Mckern in the leading role recorded by me in 1988 BBC Television.
The Master Builder (Norwegian: Bygmester Solness) is a play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was first published in December 1892 and is regarded as one of Ibsen's most significant and revealing works.
Halvard Solness is the middle-aged Master Builder of a small town in Norway who has become a successful architect of some distinction and local reputation. One day while having a visit from his friend Doctor Herdal, Solness is visited by Hilde Wangel, a young woman of twenty-four from another town whom the doctor promptly recognizes from a recent trip. Soon after the Doctor leaves and Solness is alone with Hilde, she reminds him that they are not strangers and that they had previously met in her home town ten years ago when she was fourteen years of age. When Solness does not respond to her quickly enough she reminds him that at one point he had made advances upon her, offered a romantic interlude, and promised her "castles in the sky" during their encounter, which she believed. He denies this and she gradually convinces him, however, that she can assist him with his household duties and he takes her into his home.
Solness is also the manager of an architectural office in which he employs Knut Brovik, his son Ragnar Brovik, and Kaia Fosli. Kaia and Ragnar are romantically linked and Ragnar has amibitions to become promoted in his architectural vocation which Solness is remiss to grant or support. Solness also has a complicated relationship with his wife Aline and the two are discovered to have lost children as a result of a dangerous fire from years past. During this time period, Solness unexpectedly builds a closer tie with Hilda while she is in his home as she supports his architectural vocation and new architectural projects.
During the construction of his most recent project which included towering steeples, Hilde learns that Solness suffers from acrophobia, a morbid fear of extreme heights, but nonetheless encourages him to climb the steeples to their very height at the public opening of the newly completed building. Solness, inspired by her words, begins his ascent to the top of the steeples when he suddenly loses his footing and crashes to his death on the ground before the spectators collected for the opening of the new building. Among the spectators standing aghast at the sight, only Hilde comes forward with a gleeful expression on her face stating the words, "My Master Builder."

Henrik Ibsen (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈhɛnɾɪk ˈɪpsən]; 20 March 1828 – 23 May 1906) was a major 19th-century Norwegian playwright, theatre director, and poet. He is often referred to as "the father of prose drama" and is one of the founders of Modernism in the theatre. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, Ghosts, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, and The Master Builder.
Several of his plays were considered scandalous to many of his era, when European theater was required to model strict mores of family life and propriety. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many façades, revealing much that was disquieting to many contemporaries. It utilized a critical eye and free inquiry into the conditions of life and issues of morality. The poetic and cinematic play Peer Gynt, however, has strong surreal elements.
Ibsen is often ranked as one of the truly great playwrights in the European tradition. Richard Hornby describes him as "a profound poetic dramatist—the best since Shakespeare". He influenced other playwrights and novelists such as George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and Eugene O'Neill. Many critics consider him the greatest playwright since Shakespeare.

Plot: Planet Ibsen is about a tormented playwright who is forced to revisit his past while being trapped inside his archrival's most famous play. Planet Ibsen explores the rivalry between Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen and his Swedish counterpart August Strindberg. In Planet Ibsen, August Strindberg believes he is trapped inside Henrik Ibsen's A Dolls House and his only means of escape is to rewrite Ibsen's play, in the attempt to revise his life. Planet Ibsen, a surrealist film set in the Victorian era, speaks to a wide range of audiences by bringing family and marital relationships to the forefront. Here's the wonderful play The Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen starring Leo Mckern in the leading role recorded by me in 1988 BBC Television.
The Master Builder (Norwegian: Bygmester Solness) is a play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It was first published in December 1892 and is regarded as one of Ibsen's most significant and revealing works.
Halvard Solness is the middle-aged Master Builder of a small town in Norway who has become a successful architect of some distinction and local reputation. One day while having a visit from his friend Doctor Herdal, Solness is visited by Hilde Wangel, a young woman of twenty-four from another town whom the doctor promptly recognizes from a recent trip. Soon after the Doctor leaves and Solness is alone with Hilde, she reminds him that they are not strangers and that they had previously met in her home town ten years ago when she was fourteen years of age. When Solness does not respond to her quickly enough she reminds him that at one point he had made advances upon her, offered a romantic interlude, and promised her "castles in the sky" during their encounter, which she believed. He denies this and she gradually convinces him, however, that she can assist him with his household duties and he takes her into his home.
Solness is also the manager of an architectural office in which he employs Knut Brovik, his son Ragnar Brovik, and Kaia Fosli. Kaia and Ragnar are romantically linked and Ragnar has amibitions to become promoted in his architectural vocation which Solness is remiss to grant or support. Solness also has a complicated relationship with his wife Aline and the two are discovered to have lost children as a result of a dangerous fire from years past. During this time period, Solness unexpectedly builds a closer tie with Hilda while she is in his home as she supports his architectural vocation and new architectural projects.
During the construction of his most recent project which included towering steeples, Hilde learns that Solness suffers from acrophobia, a morbid fear of extreme heights, but nonetheless encourages him to climb the steeples to their very height at the public opening of the newly completed building. Solness, inspired by her words, begins his ascent to the top of the steeples when he suddenly loses his footing and crashes to his death on the ground before the spectators collected for the opening of the new building. Among the spectators standing aghast at the sight, only Hilde comes forward with a gleeful expression on her face stating the words, "My Master Builder."

Starring Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto and featuring an especially memorable performance from Odessa Young (Looking for Grace), it explores the place secrets can have in our lives, and of the consequences when the truth comes out.
Stone and Young sat down with us to discuss the film, how he initially wasn't taken by Young and the brutality of truth.
In a frank exchange, Stone and Young address the principle of the third-act payoff and the criticism that, good as the film is, it side-steps its obligation to deliver a wholly satisfying conclusion regarding at least one character.
Stone also offers a compelling response to the proposal that cinema is a better medium than theatre. Young's willingness to have words put in her mouth is also made very clear.

Ist Engstrand, der dringend Geld für sein zwielichtiges Etablissement braucht, wirklich Regines Vater? Und warum war Helene im ersten Jahr ihrer Ehe zu Manders geflohen, der heute ihr Stiftungsvorsitzender ist?
Helene Alving beschließt, die ganze Wahrheit aufzudecken, denn in der Beziehung von Osvald und Regine sieht sie die Wiederkehr der Affäre, die ihr Mann mit Regines Mutter hatte, dem damaligen Dienstmädchen. Als mitten in der Nacht das Kinderheim in Flammen aufgeht, überstürzen sich die Geständnisse und Entscheidungen. Die Wahrheit soll nun Helenes mühsam erkämpfte Freiheit retten, doch Manders, Engstrand und auch Regine folgen anderen Zielen, sie arbeiten an ihrem gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg und am ökonomischen Erfolg. Den Kindern der Freiheit ist kein Glück beschieden. Helene Alving wird von den Gespenstern der Vergangenheit eingeholt und bleibt allein zurück mit ihrem sterbenden Sohn.

Helene Alving beschließt, die ganze Wahrheit aufzudecken, denn in der Beziehung von Osvald und Regine sieht sie die Wiederkehr der Affäre, die ihr Mann mit Regines Mutter hatte, dem damaligen Dienstmädchen.
