I sat quietly just a few metres away from wild sloth bears as they slobbered, tussled and wrestled over honey at Daroji bear sanctuary, India. These bears are wild and protected within the large reserve. Some are nuisance bears that have been captured trying to steal food, or attack people, in local villages, others have been translocated from areas where their habitat is being destroyed. Once a day the wildlife wardens smear honey on a few rocks to ensure that the most recently introduced bears have enough food. This makes them more visible and helps the wardens to monitor the health and population of the reserves several hundred sloth bears. It also gave us the perfect opportunity to film and photograph them.

Sloth bear siblings moved to their new exhibit at the San Diego Zoo after completing quarantine at the Zoo’s animal hospital. The bears were quick to explore all the features of the habitat including the felled-tree climbing structure, a raised platform, and puzzle feeders that reward the animal with food treats when jostled or rolled. This species of bear is omnivorous but uses its claws and digging ability to seek out insects from the ground and inside rotting trees. When it comes to its diet, the sloth bear has more in common with anteaters than other bears.
The sloth bears, named Sahaasa (male) and Kayla (female), are on a loan from the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Sloth bears, despite having "sloth" in their name, are not slow-moving creatures and can run faster than humans.
The bears made their exhibit debut just in time for the opening of the San Diego Zoo’s annual Jungle Bells celebration, presented by California Coast Credit Union. This year’s event features a new area - the Northern Frontiers Holiday Forest, inside Polar Bear Plunge, is with decorated trees designed to entertain during the day and a light display that will delight at night.

This is a family of a Tiger, with 4 female cubs around 20 months old. Their father is named Waghdoh a magnificient male, also known to be one of the biggest male tigers in India. We didnt get a chance to get a video of him, but in this video you will see the cubs and their mother.

Just in time for Mother's Day, the Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, is happy to announce the birth of two sloth bear cubs that were born on January 20. This is the first successful litter of sloth bears born at Brookfield Zoo. Until today, May 8, when they made their public debut, the cubs have been in a maternity den with their mom, Hani, 10, growing by leaps and bounds.
Zoo guests will be able to witness one of the most intriguing behavioral traits of this species: a mother sloth bear carrying her young on her back. Rarely seen in other bear species, a cub riding on its mother's back is a regular mode of family travel. Hani will continue to carry her cubs until they are about a third her size. Be sure to check out the cubs during the zoo's annual Bear Awareness Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19.

A classic case of human-animal conflict.
Bear mauls Indian farmer to death and eats his remains during horrific attack that left second man with serious facial injuries.
These sad images throw up the very real problem faced by wildlife in India, that of human-animal conflict, habitat loss and the ingress of human beings into traditional wildlife habitats.
A farmer has been killed and partially eaten and a second man left with serious injuries to his face and arms during a horrific sloth bear attack in India.
The farmer is understood to have ventured into a wooded area of his property near the remote village of Madhugiri in Karnataka state on Monday in search of aloe vera when the attack took place.
Identified only as a 45-year-old man named Somanna, the farmer is understood to have come face-to-face with the bear and, fearing for his life, attacked it with a machete. The animal retaliated, mauled Somanna to death and then began eating his remains.
The farmer's cries for help attracted a crowd to the scene who began to throw stones in the hope of scaring the animal away from the village. The bear then charged at the crowd, seriously injuring a second man, before police arrived approximately four hours later and shot the animal dead.
After it killed Somanna, the 12-year-old sloth bear turned on the crowd who had tried to intervene and savaged a 55-year-old manual worker named Thimmaiah, The Times of India reported.
He was left with multiple lacerations on his face, body and arms - and is now recovering at Victoria Hospital campus in nearby Bengaluru.
The crowd dispersed after the animal charged them and the police were called. The bear was left sitting Somanna's body for four hours before officers arrived and shot the animal dead.
According to witnesses, the animal gnawed at his corpse during those four hours - an act experts described as highly unusual as wild bears tend to run away from the bodies of human victims, not look upon them as food.
By the time officers killed the bear it had already eaten Somanna's right leg and much of his left thigh. The act suggests the animal may have been close to starving to death before the attack.
This is reinforced by the fact the animal was found so close to the village. It is believed it had strayed from a nearby conservation area where sloth bears are protected from hunting and deforestation.
Experts say there are at least five sloth bear attacks every year in Tumakuru district - the area in which the village of Madhugiri lies.
However this is the first report of an animal actually eating a human victim in Karnataka state.
'Usually, bears try to push or injure a human in such encounters. In many cases, bears run away. What we saw on Monday was different, local warden TVN Murthy told The Times of India.
'The bear apparently sat next to the dead body for four hours and frequently nibbled at the body. It refused to go away. We're witnessing such an incident for the first time in the state,' he added.
A sloth bear's aggressive disposition, strong jaw and large canine teeth make them a particularly deadly when attacked, either by humans or Bengal tigers, who occasionally see them as food.
However their typical diet is fruit, termites and bees, and physical attacks on humans are unusual.
Sloth bears are under threat in the Indian subcontinent and they are often eaten for their meat or hunted for their claws, which are considered lucky.
Others are taken into captivity, treated incredibly cruelly and used as performing pets.

A domesticated Sloth bear gets angry and attacks its handler, in Assam, India.
The sloth bear or Ursus ursinus or Melursus ursinus, also known as the labiated bear, is a nocturnal insectivorous species of bear found wild within the Indian subcontinent. The sloth bear evolved from ancestral brown bears during the Pleistocene and shares features found in insect-eating mammals through convergent evolution. The population isolated in Sri Lanka is considered as a subspecies. Unlike brown and black bears, sloth bears have lankier builds, long shaggy coats that form a mane around the face, long sickle shaped claws, and a specially adapted lower lip and palate used for sucking insects. Sloth bears breed during spring and early summer and give birth near the beginning of winter. They feed on termites, honeybee colonies and fruits. Sloth bears sometimes attack humans that encroach on their territory. Historically, humans have drastically reduced their habitat and diminished their population by hunting them for food and products such as their baculum and claws. These bears have been used as performing pets due to their tameable nature.
Adult sloth bears may travel in pairs, with the males being gentle with cubs. They may fight for food. They walk in a slow, shambling motion, with their feet being set down in a noisy, flapping motion. They are capable of galloping faster than running humans. Although they appear slow and clumsy, sloth bears are excellent climbers. They climb to feed and rest, though not to escape enemies, as they prefer to stand their ground. They are capable of climbing on smooth surfaces and hang upside down like sloths. They are good swimmers, and primarily enter water to play. Sounds such as gurgling or humming are made by bears resting or sucking their paws. Sows will emit crooning sounds to their cubs. The species is the most vociferous when mating, and make loud, melodious calls when doing so. Sloth bears do not hibernate. They make their day beds out of broken branches in trees, and will rest in caves during the wet season. Sloth bears are the most nocturnal of bears, though sows become more active in daytime when with cubs.
The breeding season for sloth bears varies according to location. In India, they mate in April, May and June, and give birth in December and early January.
Assam is a north-eastern state of India surrounded by six of the other Seven Sister States: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Assam is known for its exquisite natural resources, geography and its important role in India's freedom struggle. The capital city of Assam is Dispur, a specialized city circuit region located on the inside of its largest metropolis, Guwahati. Assam is particularly famous for its natural beauty. The landscape includes tea gardens, the river Brahmaputra, and many historical monuments and temples. A state with an abundance of forest, Assam also has five national parks, around half a dozen other wildlife sanctuaries, and is home to two-thirds of the population of the unique one-horned rhino. When it comes to wildlife, Assam too has successfully conserved the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from near extinction, along with the tiger and numerous species of birds, and it provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. It is becoming an increasingly popular destination for wildlife tourism, and Kaziranga and Manas are both World Heritage Sites.
Another aspect that separates Assam from the rest of Indian states is the rich composite culture of the state. Assamese constitute the majority of the state's population but the state has over two dozen other big and small tribal groups with many of them having their own language, writing system, dance forms and traditions. Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys along with the Karbi Anglong and the Dima Hasao district with an area of 30,285 square miles. Assam also shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh.

I visited Wildlife SOS in India to learn about the plight of India's dancing bears. http://www.ironammonite.com/2010/06/the-sloth-bears-tale-dancing-no-more.html My first stop was the Daroji bear sanctuary in Hampi, where I saw bears living in the wild and I met Samad Kottur, a local science teacher, who works to protect and rescue Sloth Bears. I then travelled to the bannerghatta bear rescue centre where I saw the effect of the dancing bear trade for myself.
This video was 1st posted in 2009 and received over 200,000 views, later that year the last dancing bear was rescued from the streets of India. The trade continues in Russia and China. Following a viral attack originating in Russia, this video was inexplicably removed from YouTube - we believe that this was the work of those opposing conservation organisations who are trying to stop the trade.

Most of the sloth bears Samad has rescued have been from the brutal art of bear dancing - a traditional livelihood which has been practiced in rural India for centuries but which has been illegal since the wildlife protection act of 1972. Yet until very recently during the breeding season bear poachers would wait outside a den for the mother to leave in search of food for her young. They would swoop in, grab and bag the young cubs and sell them for less than 30,000 rupees (about 350 pounds) to Kollanders, the traditional bear dancing community. 'Here they begin a life of pain and discomfort.' Sammad told me, 'After a few months their canines are ripped out, their claws are clipped, males are castrated and a red hot iron is used to pierce their sensitive nuzzle through which a coarse rope is threaded.' it is the pain of pulling on this rope that makes them dance as they are dragged from village to village and made to perform, standing on their hind legs and used as puppets on a string. All the while enduring severe pain and punishment. 'they are severely malnourished and are only given the very poorest food to survive on' says Sammad with a tear in his eye 'when we rescue them they are in really bad shape'.

In a brutal tit-for-tat, these central Indian villagers attacked a Sloth Bear that turned on a man, and bludgeoned it to death after which they set it on fire, in a grotesque display of lynching.
A villager in India has a lucky escape when he was saved from a deadly Sloth Bear attack by a crowd that descends upon the bear with sticks and stones, fast turning into a riot, in Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh. The sloth bear or Ursus ursinus or Melursus ursinus, also known as the labiated bear, is a nocturnal insectivorous species of bear found wild within the Indian subcontinent. The sloth bear evolved from ancestral brown bears during the Pleistocene and shares features found in insect-eating mammals through convergent evolution. The population isolated in Sri Lanka is considered as a subspecies. Unlike brown and black bears, sloth bears have lankier builds, long shaggy coats that form a mane around the face, long sickle shaped claws, and a specially adapted lower lip and palate used for sucking insects. Sloth bears breed during spring and early summer and give birth near the beginning of winter. They feed on termites, honeybee colonies and fruits. Sloth bears sometimes attack humans that encroach on their territory. Historically, humans have drastically reduced their habitat and diminished their population by hunting them for food and products such as their baculum and claws. These bears have been used as performing pets due to their tameable nature. Adult sloth bears may travel in pairs, with the males being gentle with cubs. They may fight for food. They walk in a slow, shambling motion, with their feet being set down in a noisy, flapping motion. They are capable of galloping faster than running humans. Although they appear slow and clumsy, sloth bears are excellent climbers. They climb to feed and rest, though not to escape enemies, as they prefer to stand their ground. They are capable of climbing on smooth surfaces and hang upside down like sloths. They are good swimmers, and primarily enter water to play. Sounds such as gurgling or humming are made by bears resting or sucking their paws. Sows will emit crooning sounds to their cubs. The species is the most vociferous when mating, and make loud, melodious calls when doing so. Sloth bears do not hibernate. They make their day beds out of broken branches in trees, and will rest in caves during the wet season. Sloth bears are the most nocturnal of bears, though sows become more active in daytime when with cubs. The breeding season for sloth bears varies according to location. In India, they mate in April, May and June, and give birth in December and early January. Assam is a north-eastern state of India surrounded by six of the other Seven Sister States: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Assam is known for its exquisite natural resources, geography and its important role in India's freedom struggle. The capital city of Assam is Dispur, a specialized city circuit region located on the inside of its largest metropolis, Guwahati. Assam is particularly famous for its natural beauty. The landscape includes tea gardens, the river Brahmaputra, and many historical monuments and temples. Swami Vivekananda once said that, "next only to Kashmir, Assam is the most beautiful place in India". A state with an abundance of forest, Assam also has five national parks, around half a dozen other wildlife sanctuaries, and is home to two-thirds of the population of the unique one-horned rhino. When it comes to wildlife, Assam too has successfully conserved the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from near extinction, along with the tiger and numerous species of birds, and it provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. It is becoming an increasingly popular destination for wildlife tourism, and Kaziranga and Manas are both World Heritage Sites. Another aspect that separates Assam from the rest of Indian states is the rich composite culture of the state. Assamese constitute the majority of the state's population but the state has over two dozen other big and small tribal groups with many of them having their own language, writing system, dance forms and traditions. Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys along with the Karbi Anglong and the Dima Hasao district with an area of 30,285 square miles. I visited Wildlife SOS in India to learn about the plight of India's dancing bears. http://www.ironammonite.com/2010/06/the-sloth-bears-tale-dancing-no-more.html My first stop was the Daroji bear sanctuary in Hampi, where I saw bears living in the wild and I met Samad Kottur, a local science teacher, who works to protect and rescue Sloth Bears. I then travelled to the bannerghatta bear rescue centre where I saw the effect of the dancing bear trade for myself. This video was 1st posted in 2009 and received over 200,000 views, later that year the last dancing bear was rescued from the streets of India. The trade continues in Russia and China. Following a viral attack originating in Russia, this video was inexplicably removed from YouTube - we believe that this was the work of those opposing conservation organisations who are trying to stop the trade. Yet until very recently during the breeding season bear poachers would wait outside a den for the mother to leave in search of food for her young. They would swoop in, grab and bag the young cubs and sell them for less than 30,000 rupees (about 350 pounds) to Kollanders, the traditional bear dancing community. 'Here they begin a life of pain and discomfort.' Sammad told me, 'After a few months their canines are ripped out, their claws are clipped, males are castrated and a red hot iron is used to pierce their sensitive nuzzle through which a coarse rope is threaded.' it is the pain of pulling on this rope that makes them dance as they are dragged from village to village and made to perform, standing on their hind legs and used as puppets on a string. All the while enduring severe pain and punishment. I sat quietly just a few metres away from wild sloth bears as they slobbered, tussled and wrestled over honey at Daroji bear sanctuary, India. These bears are wild and protected within the large reserve. Some are nuisance bears that have been captured trying to steal food, or attack people, in local villages, others have been translocated from areas where their habitat is being destroyed. Once a day the wildlife wardens smear honey on a few rocks to ensure that the most recently introduced bears have enough food. This makes them more visible and helps the wardens to monitor the health and population of the reserves several hundred sloth bears. This is a family of a Tiger, with 4 female cubs around 20 months old. Their father is named Waghdoh a magnificient male, also known to be one of the biggest male tigers in India. We didnt get a chance to get a video of him, but in this video you will see the cubs and their mother.

Just in time for Mother's Day, the Chicago Zoological Society, which manages Brookfield Zoo, is happy to announce the birth of two sloth bear cubs that were born on January 20. This is the first successful litter of sloth bears born at Brookfield Zoo. Until today, May 8, when they made their public debut, the cubs have been in a maternity den with their mom, Hani, 10, growing by leaps and bounds. Zoo guests will be able to witness one of the most intriguing behavioral traits of this species: a mother sloth bear carrying her young on her back. The sloth bears, named Sahaasa (male) and Kayla (female), are on a loan from the Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Sloth bears, despite having "sloth" in their name, are not slow-moving creatures and can run faster than humans.
The bears made their exhibit debut just in time for the opening of the San Diego Zoo’s annual Jungle Bells celebration, presented by California Coast Credit Union. This year’s event features a new area - the Northern Frontiers Holiday Forest, inside Polar Bear Plunge, is with decorated trees designed to entertain during the day and a light display that will delight at night.

Bear mauls Indian farmer to death and eats his remains during horrific attack that left second man with serious facial injuries.
These sad images throw up the very real problem faced by wildlife in India, that of human-animal conflict, habitat loss and the ingress of human beings into traditional wildlife habitats.
A farmer has been killed and partially eaten and a second man left with serious injuries to his face and arms during a horrific sloth bear attack in India.
The farmer is understood to have ventured into a wooded area of his property near the remote village of Madhugiri in Karnataka state on Monday in search of aloe vera when the attack took place.
Identified only as a 45-year-old man named Somanna, the farmer is understood to have come face-to-face with the bear and, fearing for his life, attacked it with a machete. The animal retaliated, mauled Somanna to death and then began eating his remains.
The farmer's cries for help attracted a crowd to the scene who began to throw stones in the hope of scaring the animal away from the village. The bear then charged at the crowd, seriously injuring a second man, before police arrived approximately four hours later and shot the animal dead.
After it killed Somanna, the 12-year-old sloth bear turned on the crowd who had tried to intervene and savaged a 55-year-old manual worker named Thimmaiah, The Times of India reported.
He was left with multiple lacerations on his face, body and arms - and is now recovering at Victoria Hospital campus in nearby Bengaluru.

Bear mauls Indian farmer to death and eats his remains during horrific attack that left second man with serious facial injuries.
These sad images throw up the very real problem faced by wildlife in India, that of human-animal conflict, habitat loss and the ingress of human beings into traditional wildlife habitats.
A farmer has been killed and partially eaten and a second man left with serious injuries to his face and arms during a horrific sloth bear attack in India.
The farmer is understood to have ventured into a wooded area of his property near the remote village of Madhugiri in Karnataka state on Monday in search of aloe vera when the attack took place.
Identified only as a 45-year-old man named Somanna, the farmer is understood to have come face-to-face with the bear and, fearing for his life, attacked it with a machete. The animal retaliated, mauled Somanna to death and then began eating his remains.
The farmer's cries for help attracted a crowd to the scene who began to throw stones in the hope of scaring the animal away from the village. The bear then charged at the crowd, seriously injuring a second man, before police arrived approximately four hours later and shot the animal dead.
After it killed Somanna, the 12-year-old sloth bear turned on the crowd who had tried to intervene and savaged a 55-year-old manual worker named Thimmaiah, The Times of India reported.
He was left with multiple lacerations on his face, body and arms - and is now recovering at Victoria Hospital campus in nearby Bengaluru.

A domesticated Sloth bear gets angry and attacks its handler, in Assam, India.
The sloth bear or Ursus ursinus or Melursus ursinus, also known as the labiated bear, is a nocturnal insectivorous species of bear found wild within the Indian subcontinent. The sloth bear evolved from ancestral brown bears during the Pleistocene and shares features found in insect-eating mammals through convergent evolution. The population isolated in Sri Lanka is considered as a subspecies. Unlike brown and black bears, sloth bears have lankier builds, long shaggy coats that form a mane around the face, long sickle shaped claws, and a specially adapted lower lip and palate used for sucking insects. Sloth bears breed during spring and early summer and give birth near the beginning of winter. They feed on termites, honeybee colonies and fruits. Sloth bears sometimes attack humans that encroach on their territory. Historically, humans have drastically reduced their habitat and diminished their population by hunting them for food and products such as their baculum and claws. These bears have been used as performing pets due to their tameable nature.
Adult sloth bears may travel in pairs, with the males being gentle with cubs. They may fight for food. They walk in a slow, shambling motion, with their feet being set down in a noisy, flapping motion. They are capable of galloping faster than running humans. Although they appear slow and clumsy, sloth bears are excellent climbers. They climb to feed and rest, though not to escape enemies, as they prefer to stand their ground. They are capable of climbing on smooth surfaces and hang upside down like sloths. They are good swimmers, and primarily enter water to play. Sounds such as gurgling or humming are made by bears resting or sucking their paws. Sows will emit crooning sounds to their cubs. The species is the most vociferous when mating, and make loud, melodious calls when doing so. Sloth bears do not hibernate. They make their day beds out of broken branches in trees, and will rest in caves during the wet season. Sloth bears are the most nocturnal of bears, though sows become more active in daytime when with cubs.
The breeding season for sloth bears varies according to location. In India, they mate in April, May and June, and give birth in December and early January.
Assam is a north-eastern state of India surrounded by six of the other Seven Sister States: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Assam is known for its exquisite natural resources, geography and its important role in India's freedom struggle. The capital city of Assam is Dispur, a specialized city circuit region located on the inside of its largest metropolis, Guwahati. Assam is particularly famous for its natural beauty. The landscape includes tea gardens, the river Brahmaputra, and many historical monuments and temples. Swami Vivekananda once said that, "next only to Kashmir, Assam is the most beautiful place in India". A state with an abundance of forest, Assam also has five national parks, around half a dozen other wildlife sanctuaries, and is home to two-thirds of the population of the unique one-horned rhino. When it comes to wildlife, Assam too has successfully conserved the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from near extinction, along with the tiger and numerous species of birds, and it provides one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephant. It is becoming an increasingly popular destination for wildlife tourism, and Kaziranga and Manas are both World Heritage Sites.
Another aspect that separates Assam from the rest of Indian states is the rich composite culture of the state. Assamese constitute the majority of the state's population but the state has over two dozen other big and small tribal groups with many of them having their own language, writing system, dance forms and traditions. Assam comprises the Brahmaputra and the Barak river valleys along with the Karbi Anglong and the Dima Hasao district with an area of 30,285 square miles. Assam also shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh.

I visited Wildlife SOS in India to learn about the plight of India's dancing bears. http://www.ironammonite.com/2010/06/the-sloth-bears-tale-dancing-no-more.html My first stop was the Daroji bear sanctuary in Hampi, where I saw bears living in the wild and I met Samad Kottur, a local science teacher, who works to protect and rescue Sloth Bears. I then travelled to the bannerghatta bear rescue centre where I saw the effect of the dancing bear trade for myself.
This video was 1st posted in 2009 and received over 200,000 views, later that year the last dancing bear was rescued from the streets of India. The trade continues in Russia and China. Following a viral attack originating in Russia, this video was inexplicably removed from YouTube - we believe that this was the work of those opposing conservation organisations who are trying to stop the trade.

Most of the sloth bears Samad has rescued have been from the brutal art of bear dancing - a traditional livelihood which has been practiced in rural India for centuries but which has been illegal since the wildlife protection act of 1972. Yet until very recently during the breeding season bear poachers would wait outside a den for the mother to leave in search of food for her young. They would swoop in, grab and bag the young cubs and sell them for less than 30,000 rupees (about 350 pounds) to Kollanders, the traditional bear dancing community. 'Here they begin a life of pain and discomfort.' Sammad told me, 'After a few months their canines are ripped out, their claws are clipped, males are castrated and a red hot iron is used to pierce their sensitive nuzzle through which a coarse rope is threaded.' it is the pain of pulling on this rope that makes them dance as they are dragged from village to village and made to perform, standing on their hind legs and used as puppets on a string. All the while enduring severe pain and punishment. 'they are severely malnourished and are only given the very poorest food to survive on' says Sammad with a tear in his eye 'when we rescue them they are in really bad shape'.
