Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll.
Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children.
Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear.
Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856
Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour.
Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell.
An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through the Looking Glass which spells out Alice Liddell's name, leading people to believe that he did in fact base the character after his real life friend.
Queen Victoria supposedly was a big fan of the book and suggested to Dodgson that he dedicate his next book to her - Carroll denied this to be true.
Dodgson took up photography and excelled at the art. He photographed many famous people include Alfred Lord Tennyson and created approximately 3000 images. But after 24 years of taking pictures he abruptly stopped.
Chess figured prominently in Dodgson's work. References to the game can be found in Through the Looking Glass. Some of his photographs feature chess being played and it has been documented that Dodgson was an avid player.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre,and its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
Alice was published in 1865, three years after the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849) ("Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852) ("Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853) ("Tertia" in the prefatory verse).
The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest.
To add the finishing touches he researched natural history for the animals presented in the book, and then had the book examined by other children—particularly the children of George MacDonald. He added his own illustrations but approached John Tenniel to illustrate the book for publication, telling him that the story had been well liked by children.
On 26 November 1864 he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself, dedicating it as "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day". Some, including Martin Gardner, speculate there was an earlier version that was destroyed later by Dodgson when he wrote a more elaborate copy by hand.
But before Alice received her copy, Dodgson was already preparing it for publication and expanding the 15,500-word original to 27,500 words,most notably adding the episodes about the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Tea-Party. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia. org)

Lewis Carroll
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (/ˈtʃɑːrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdsən/; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/), was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.
Antecedents
Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, conservative and High Church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin. His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies. The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827 and became a country parson.

It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre,and its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. Alice was published in 1865, three years after the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849) ("Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852) ("Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853) ("Tertia" in the prefatory verse). The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest. To add the finishing touches he researched natural history for the animals presented in the book, and then had the book examined by other children—particularly the children of George MacDonald. He added his own illustrations but approached John Tenniel to illustrate the book for publication, telling him that the story had been well liked by children. On 26 November 1864 he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself, dedicating it as "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day". Some, including Martin Gardner, speculate there was an earlier version that was destroyed later by Dodgson when he wrote a more elaborate copy by hand. But before Alice received her copy, Dodgson was already preparing it for publication and expanding the 15,500-word original to 27,500 words,most notably adding the episodes about the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Tea-Party. Plot: Columbia's 6th serial (following "The Spider's Web" and preceding "Mandrake the Magician") is a pre-WW II sabre-rattler that has planes crashing, secret plans disappearing and a reign of terror sweeping the USA as (unidentified) enemy spies strike at the nation's defenses. The Falcon has a black leather flying outfit that is handier to get to when needed than the Durango Kid's horse, while his two remaining partners are stuck with your basic gray (Bronson gets knocked off early), and together they are close to being a precursor to "Blackhawk" and his band. With the aid of Babs McKay and her kid brother Billy and his band of Junior Air Defenders, the three Flying G-Men keep a straight face as they face the legions of henchmen sent their way by the unknown master-mind spy chief. Keeping a straight face is not easy to do when facing a gang of henchmen directed by James W. Horne behind the over-wrought narration of Knox Manning.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll. Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children. Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear. Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856 Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour. Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell. An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Chess figured prominently in Dodgson's work. References to the game can be found in Through the Looking Glass. Some of his photographs feature chess being played and it has been documented that Dodgson was an avid player.

It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre,and its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
Alice was published in 1865, three years after the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat, on 4 July 1862, up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849) ("Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852) ("Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853) ("Tertia" in the prefatory verse).
The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest.
To add the finishing touches he researched natural history for the animals presented in the book, and then had the book examined by other children—particularly the children of George MacDonald. He added his own illustrations but approached John Tenniel to illustrate the book for publication, telling him that the story had been well liked by children.
On 26 November 1864 he gave Alice the handwritten manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself, dedicating it as "A Christmas Gift to a Dear Child in Memory of a Summer's Day". Some, including Martin Gardner, speculate there was an earlier version that was destroyed later by Dodgson when he wrote a more elaborate copy by hand.
But before Alice received her copy, Dodgson was already preparing it for publication and expanding the 15,500-word original to 27,500 words,most notably adding the episodes about the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Tea-Party. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia. org)

When Alice wakes up in Wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical scepter that can stop the evil Lord of Time before he turns forward the clock and turns Wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. With the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of Hearts back on the throne.
The film is out in the UK and the US on the 27th of May.

It's almost time to return to the world of Lewis Carroll for another trip with Alice. Wonderland director Tim Burton has stepped back to allow Muppet man James Bobin his chance at the helm and so we're nearly ready to join Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Returning as Alice and The Mad Hatter Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp are joined by Anne Hathaway, Rhys Ifans, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron-Cohen, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. The film is also a swan song for the much loved Alan Rickman. Also starring Ed Speleers, Matt Lucas, Andrew Scott, Michael Sheen, and Richard Armitage.
When Alice wakes up in Wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical scepter that can stop the evil Lord of Time before he turns forward the clock and turns Wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. With the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of Hearts back on the throne.
The film is out in the UK and the US on the 27th of May.
