An exploration into the life of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish Christian hero who at 32 years old saved as many as 100,000 Jews from the Nazi death machine in 1944-5 Budapest. The film will delve into Wallenberg's early life, his experiences in America and at the University of Michigan, his heroic efforts in Budapest, his tragic disappearance into the Russian prison system after the war and his mysterious death at the hands of his captors. The project, in its early stage of principal photography began in April 2013 and will continue through 2014.

Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman, saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jewish people during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. Two of those people whom he saved are Tom and Annette Lantos. Tom Lantos later sponsored a bill to make Wallenberg an honorary citizen of the USA. Wallenberg mysteriously disappeared in 1947, never to be heard from again. It is believed that Wallenberg was detained by the USSR and died during this time.

If you walk past the Auckland war memorial museum, you may notice a new, young pohutakawa tree in place. It was planted there earlier this month to mark the centenary of the birth of a Swedish businessman and architect. And you may well ask, why - what's the connection to us in this country? Well, it's because Raoul Wallenberg's actions during World War 2 saved the lives of up to a hundred thousand Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Families all over the world and indeed, here in Auckland owe their continued existence to his bravery and resourcefulness. He was never released. The film deals exclusively with Raoul Wallenberg's final two or three weeks in Budapest (Christmas 1944—-January 1945). There are two central events: Raoul's attempts to liberate 20 or so people captured on a truck, and his efforts to save 65,000 others who are confined to the ghetto.

Raoul Wallenberg (August 4, 1912 – July 17, 1947?) was a Swedish architect, businessman, diplomat, and humanitarian. He is widely celebrated for his successful efforts to rescue tens of thousands to about one hundred thousand Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary during the Holocaust from Hungarian Fascists and the Nazis during the later stages of World War II. While serving as Sweden's special envoy in Budapest between July and December 1944, Wallenberg issued protective passports and sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory saving tens of thousands of lives.
On January 17, 1945, during the Siege of Budapest by the Red Army, Wallenberg was detained by Soviet authorities on suspicion of espionage and subsequently disappeared. He was later reported to have died on July 17, 1947, while imprisoned in the Lubyanka, a building located in Moscow, Russia, housing both the KGB headquarters and its affiliated prison. The motives behind Wallenberg's arrest and imprisonment by the Soviet government, along with questions surrounding the circumstances of his death and his possible ties to US intelligence, remain mysterious and are the subject of continued speculation.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

If you walk past the Auckland war memorial museum, you may notice a new, young pohutakawa tree in place. It was planted there earlier this month to mark the centenary of the birth of a Swedish businessman and architect. And you may well ask, why - what's the connection to us in this country? Well, it's because Raoul Wallenberg's actions during World War 2 saved the lives of up to a hundred thousand Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Families all over the world and indeed, here in Auckland owe their continued existence to his bravery and resourcefulness. There are two central events: Raoul's attempts to liberate 20 or so people captured on a truck, and his efforts to save 65,000 others who are confined to the ghetto.

On 27 June 2013 the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation honored Sir Nicholas Winton, English Holocaust savior that turned 104 last May. On 27 June 2013 the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation honored Sir Nicholas Winton, English Holocaust savior that turned 104 last May. During Second World War Winton rescued and saved from certain death more than six hundred Jewish children from Czechoslovakia condemned by the Nazis to perish at death camps.
Winton received the Raoul Wallenberg Centennial Medal in a special ceremony held at the Embassy of Sweden in London with the presence of former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Eduardo Eurnekian and Baruch Tenenbaum, Chairman and Founder of the educational NGO, presented the award.
In his speech, Eurnekian said: "Sir Nicholas Winton risked his comfortable position as a stockbroker and began an operation that any sensible person would have qualified as impossible. Few people deserve the Nobel Peace Prize more than Sir Nicholas Winton".

On the eve of World War I, there were two million Armenians in the declining Ottoman Empire. By 1922, there were fewer than 400,000. The others — some 1.5 million — were killed in what historians consider a genocide.
As David Fromkin put it in his widely praised history of World War I and its aftermath, "A Peace to End All Peace": "Rape and beating were commonplace. Those who were not killed at once were driven through mountains and deserts without food, drink or shelter. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians eventually succumbed or were killed ."
The man who invented the word "genocide"— Raphael Lemkin, a lawyer of Polish-Jewish origin — was moved to investigate the attempt to eliminate an entire people by accounts of the massacres of Armenians. He did not, however, coin the word until 1943, applying it to Nazi Germany and the Jews in a book published a year later, "Axis Rule in Occupied Europe."
The roots of the genocide lie in the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
The empire's ruler was also the caliph, or leader of the Islamic community. Minority religious communities, like the Christian Armenians, were allowed to maintain their religious, social and legal structures, but were often subject to extra taxes or other measures.
Concentrated largely in eastern Anatolia, many of them merchants and industrialists, Armenians, historians say, appeared markedly better off in many ways than their Turkish neighbors, largely small peasants or ill-paid government functionaries and soldiers.
At the turn of the 20th Century, the once far-flung Ottoman empire was crumbling at the edges, beset by revolts among Christian subjects to the north — vast swaths of territory were lost in the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 — and the subject of coffee house grumbling among Arab nationalist intellectuals in Damascus and elsewhere.
