From this vantage point, you can identify a number of the birds and sea mammals that find refuge here. Look for black cormorants perched on a rock, perhaps stretching their wings to dry. Watch the water's surface; you might see a harbor seal poke its head out of the water, or a sea otter wrapped in kelp.
Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. This safe haven is home to a rich variety of fishes, plants, marine mammals and birds.

Spot sharks, rays and other fishes as they cruise through our rocky reef.
Sevengill sharks, leopard sharks, spiny dogfish and the elusive Pacific angel shark all dwell in our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit—like they do just beyond our walls in the cold waters of the bay. Designed with sharks in mind, this exhibit's 90-foot-long hourglass shape gives our big sharks plenty of room to glide and turn.
Watch carefully and you might see big skates and bat rays pass by the window, just like their shark kin. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for sturgeon coasting through the water, rockfish and giant sea bass relaxing by the reef, and flatfish nestling on the sandy seafloor.

Monterey Bay Aquarium video taken in September 2009 with my Canon HF100 camera. This was our first visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and hopefully not the last. The staff were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable......first rate all the way! This video shows only a few highlights of the many fascinating animals that live there. My favorites are here - the kelp forest, amazing jellyfish (which look like ufos or something alien or at least like something out of science fiction), seahorses, sea otters, and the Outer Bay exhibit which also contained the aquarium's new young female Great White shark. The Monterey Bay Aquarium should not be missed if you are in the area!
UPDATE: This Great White Shark has been released back to the ocean.
Click on "HD". You may have to hit pause and let it load through once before watching in Hi-Def, depending on how slow YouTube is acting at the time. Watching the videos "in channel" in HD seems to give good results, sometimes. Give it a try. Helps a bit if your computer is fast. Not bad in non-HD also.

During our visit to Grandma's house in California, we went on a little field trip with our cousins Sophia and Lily.
Our first stop was the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row of the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey, California, United States. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors. It holds thousands of plants and animals, representing more than 600 species on display. The aquarium benefits from a high circulation of fresh ocean water which is obtained through pipes which pump it in continuously from Monterey Bay.
Our second stop was at Wild Things in Salinas, CA.
Wild Things is a sanctuary for rescued animals as well as a training facility for animals used in movies and television. We went on a tour that showed us all the different animals that live at their zoo. At the end of the tour, we got to feed carrots to an elephant!

We observed a full predation event on a Gray Whale calf right by Cannery Row and Monterey Harbor on Saturday. A group of 7 Killer Whales chased and attacked a mother and calf pair of Gray Whales in a pursuit that lasted over an hour and covered several miles near shore in Monterey. The Gray Whale mother defended her calf fiercely as she held it on her back and thrashed with her flukes, but the Killer Whales ultimately were successful before the Gray Whales could run all the way to shore to escape. The Killer Whales work as a team, as you can see in the video, and they take turns and work from above and below the surface to separate the mom and calf pair and exhaust the calf by holding it underwater and bashing it around. This is a very specialized hunting style only seen by Bigg's (transient) Killer Whales on the West Coast of the US. (for Gray Whale predation) As hard as this event can be to watch, it is also a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these incredible predators in action. The Gray Whale mother was quite upset and did charge around the area and at the Killer Whales for several hours after the calf perished. Video by Katlyn Taylor.

Monterey Bay
Monterey Bay is a bay of the Pacific Ocean located on the coast of the U.S. state of California. The bay is south of the major cities of San Francisco and San Jose. The county-seat city of Santa Cruz is located at the north end of the bay. The county-seat city of Monterey is on the Monterey Peninsula at the south end.
The Monterey Bay Area is a local colloquialism sometimes used to describe the whole of the Central Coast communities of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
On October 12, 1997, singer-songwriter John Denver died when he crashed into Monterey Bay off Pacific Grove in his personal plane.
Toponymy
The first European to discover Monterey Bay was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 16, 1542 while sailing northward along the coast on a Spanish naval expedition. He named the bay Bahía de los Pinos, probably because of the forest of pine trees first encountered while rounding the peninsula at the southern end of the bay. Cabrillo's name for the bay was lost, but the westernmost point of the peninsula is still known as Point Pinos.

Our Monterey Bay cam offers a peek from the Aquarium's ocean-view decks.
From this vantage point, you can identify a number of the birds and sea mammals that find refuge here. Look for black cormorants perched on a rock, perhaps stretching their wings to dry. Watch the water's surface; you might see a harbor seal poke its head out of the water, or a sea otter wrapped in kelp.
Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. This safe haven is home to a rich variety of fishes, plants, marine mammals and birds.

Spot sharks, rays and other fishes as they cruise through our rocky reef.
Sevengill sharks, leopard sharks, spiny dogfish and the elusive Pacific angel shark all dwell in our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit—like they do just beyond our walls in the cold waters of the bay. Designed with sharks in mind, this exhibit's 90-foot-long hourglass shape gives our big sharks plenty of room to glide and turn.
Watch carefully and you might see big skates and bat rays pass by the window, just like their shark kin. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for sturgeon coasting through the water, rockfish and giant sea bass relaxing by the reef, and flatfish nestling on the sandy seafloor.

Monterey Bay Aquarium video taken in September 2009 with my Canon HF100 camera. This was our first visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and hopefully not the last. The staff were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable......first rate all the way! This video shows only a few highlights of the many fascinating animals that live there. My favorites are here - the kelp forest, amazing jellyfish (which look like ufos or something alien or at least like something out of science fiction), seahorses, sea otters, and the Outer Bay exhibit which also contained the aquarium's new young female Great White shark. The Monterey Bay Aquarium should not be missed if you are in the area!
UPDATE: This Great White Shark has been released back to the ocean.
Click on "HD". You may have to hit pause and let it load through once before watching in Hi-Def, depending on how slow YouTube is acting at the time. During our visit to Grandma's house in California, we went on a little field trip with our cousins Sophia and Lily.
Our first stop was the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row of the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey, California, United States. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors. It holds thousands of plants and animals, representing more than 600 species on display. The aquarium benefits from a high circulation of fresh ocean water which is obtained through pipes which pump it in continuously from Monterey Bay.
Our second stop was at Wild Things in Salinas, CA.
Wild Things is a sanctuary for rescued animals as well as a training facility for animals used in movies and television. We went on a tour that showed us all the different animals that live at their zoo. At the end of the tour, we got to feed carrots to an elephant!

We observed a full predation event on a Gray Whale calf right by Cannery Row and Monterey Harbor on Saturday. A group of 7 Killer Whales chased and attacked a mother and calf pair of Gray Whales in a pursuit that lasted over an hour and covered several miles near shore in Monterey. The Gray Whale mother defended her calf fiercely as she held it on her back and thrashed with her flukes, but the Killer Whales ultimately were successful before the Gray Whales could run all the way to shore to escape. The Killer Whales work as a team, as you can see in the video, and they take turns and work from above and below the surface to separate the mom and calf pair and exhaust the calf by holding it underwater and bashing it around. This is a very specialized hunting style only seen by Bigg's (transient) Killer Whales on the West Coast of the US. (for Gray Whale predation) As hard as this event can be to watch, it is also a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these incredible predators in action. The Gray Whale mother was quite upset and did charge around the area and at the Killer Whales for several hours after the calf perished. Video by Katlyn Taylor.

Bluefin Tuna Fishing, Monterey Bay, CA near Santa Cruz. 10/17/2015
I was lucky to hook and land 2 nice Bluefin Tuna in Monterey Bay, CA. This was Saturday, October 17th, 2015. I was using slow trolled live mackerel. The lucky fishing rod is an Ugly Stick Custom, Medium-Heavy 30-60 lb line rated. My son won this rod at the 2014 Coastside Fishing Club Halibut Derby Raffle. I thought it was too stout for any fishing I'd see in Monterey Bay.. until these Bluefin Tuna showed up. So far that lucky rod had hooked and landed 5 Bluefin Tuna since the end of September. It has a Shimano TLD20 reel spooled with 40 lb Suffix Mono and a 40 lb Florocarbon Leader.

In this 1991 episode of Mathnet (the longest episode ever), George and Pat get a call from their old boss from Los Angeles: Chief Thad Green. Chief Green tells them that a diamond that was found in an earlier case and donated to charity, better known as the Despair Diamond (which was thought to have brought bad luck to the owners) is to be exhibited in Monterey, California at a charity gala. It is feared that it may be stolen. The chief sends the Mathnetters on the next flight to Monterey. According to the chief's fax, there had been a number of jewelry thefts in the Monterey area over the past few months, and he suspects that the one who did it is an international playboy by the name of Archibald "Archie" Leach, who had been in, around, and/or about numerous fashionable society affairs...

Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Railway La Selva Beach Bridge Reopens
On February 26th, 2015 the Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Railway and the Santa Cruz Regional Transportation joined together for reopening ceremony for the newly completed La Selva Beach Bridge. The Bridge was in horrible shape and from August of 2014 to January of 2015, the new bridge was built. It was an especially challenging project given the terrain and location of the bridge, but Stacy and Witbeck Construction Co. did an outstanding job on this project. The RTC held a ceremony for the people to see the new bridge and we chased the Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Ry's F9H's and Passenger train on its maiden voyage from Watsonville to La Selva and back. I was lucky to hook and land 2 nice Bluefin Tuna in Monterey Bay, CA. This was Saturday, October 17th, 2015. I was using slow trolled live mackerel. The lucky fishing rod is an Ugly Stick Custom, Medium-Heavy 30-60 lb line rated. My son won this rod at the 2014 Coastside Fishing Club Halibut Derby Raffle. I thought it was too stout for any fishing I'd see in Monterey Bay.. until these Bluefin Tuna showed up. So far that lucky rod had hooked and landed 5 Bluefin Tuna since the end of September. It has a Shimano TLD20 reel spooled with 40 lb Suffix Mono and a 40 lb Florocarbon Leader.

In this 1991 episode of Mathnet (the longest episode ever), George and Pat get a call from their old boss from Los Angeles: Chief Thad Green. Chief Green tells them that a diamond that was found in an earlier case and donated to charity, better known as the Despair Diamond (which was thought to have brought bad luck to the owners) is to be exhibited in Monterey, California at a charity gala. It is feared that it may be stolen. The chief sends the Mathnetters on the next flight to Monterey.
According to the chief's fax, there had been a number of jewelry thefts in the Monterey area over the past few months, and he suspects that the one who did it is an international playboy by the name of Archibald "Archie" Leach, who had been in, around, and/or about numerous fashionable society affairs when precious jewelry was stolen. The police cannot prove it. Leach always manages to evade undercover cops, so George and Pat have to work as hard as possible to catch him.
When the Mathnetters arrive in Monterey, they meet with the local sheriff, Mooney Rooney. After a brief change of clothes at the hotel, Sheriff Rooney sends George and Pat to the gala, hosted by one Lady Esther Astor Astute. The two go undercover as a beef-growing couple from Omaha, where they meet Lady Astute, and, of course, Archibald Leach himself.
In the middle of the gala, multiple gunshots are heard, and in all the commotion, the Despair Diamond has been stolen!
