Mexia, Texas

Mexia (/məˈheɪ.ə/ mə-HAY-ə or /məˈhɛər/ mə-HAIR) is a city in Limestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,459 at the 2010 census.

The city's motto, based on the fact that outsiders tend to mispronounce the name [ˈmɛksiə], is "A great place, no matter how you pronounce it."

Named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Hispanic hero for the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, the town was founded near his estate. Nearby attractions include Fort Parker Historical recreation, the Confederate Reunion grounds, and Mexia State Supported Living Center (formerly Mexia State School), which began as a prisoner of war camp for members of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps during World War II.

Mexia is also home to the Mexia Public Schools Museum, one of a few museums dedicated to the historical and social significance of a Texas public school system.

Mexia hosts a large Juneteenth celebration every year.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13 km²), all land.

The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.

The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.

In Australia, high school is a secondary school, from Year 7 or Year 8 through to Year 12, varying from state to state. High school immediately follows primary (elementary) school; therefore, a Year-7 Australian high-school student is sometimes as young as 12. In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".

Mexia High School

Mexia High School is a public high school in Mexia, Texas, (USA) and classified as a 4A school by the UIL. It is part of the Mexia Independent School District that serves students in northeastern Limestone County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.

Shattered Dreams

"Shattered Dreams" is a hit pop song by English pop group Johnny Hates Jazz. Written by the band's lead singer Clark Datchler, their major-label debut single was a worldwide hit.

"Shattered Dreams" entered the UK Singles Chart in March 1987 at #92 but gained popularity through extensive radio play and video rotation on MTV and quickly climbed the charts, peaking at #5 in May 1987, spending three weeks at that position and a total of 16 weeks in the chart. It went on to become a top 20 hit throughout Europe, and even reached the top 10 in some countries.

The song fared even better the following year in the U.S. There, "Shattered Dreams" was released early in 1988 with a totally different music video, shot entirely in black and white and directed by David Fincher, which Datchler actually preferred. The single peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart for one week. A midtempo club remix of the track was released on 12" vinyl.
