Irma Thomas (born February 18, 1941, Ponchatoula, Louisiana, United States) is an American singer from New Orleans. She is known as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans".
Thomas is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but never experienced their level of commercial success. In 2007, she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for After the Rain, her first Grammy in a career spanning over 50 years.
Born Irma Lee, as a teenager she sang with a Baptist church choir. She auditioned for Specialty Records at the age of 13. By the time she was 19, she had been married twice and had four children. Keeping her second ex-husband's surname, she worked as a waitress in New Orleans, occasionally singing with bandleader Tommy Ridgley, who helped her land a record deal with the local Ron label. Her first single, "(You Can Have My Husband but) Don't Mess with My Man," was released in spring 1960, and reached number 22 on the Billboard R&B chart.
She then began recording on the Minit label, working with songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint on songs including "It’s Raining" and "Ruler of My Heart", which was later reinterpreted by Otis Redding as "Pain in My Heart". Imperial Records acquired Minit in 1963, and a string of successful releases followed. These included "Wish Someone Would Care”, her biggest national hit; its B-side "Breakaway", written by Jackie DeShannon and Sharon Sheely (later covered by Tracey Ullman, among others); "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is", co-written by a young Randy Newman and future country star Jeannie Seely, among others; and "Time Is on My Side", a song previously recorded by Kai Winding and later by the Rolling Stones).

Written by Jackie DeShannon and Sharon Sheeley I've made my reservation I'm leaving town tomorrow I'll find somebody new And there'll be No more sorrow That's what I do each time But I can't follow through I can't breakaway Though you make me cry I can't breakaway I can't say goodbye No, I'll never Never breakaway From you No, no, no, no No, no, no No, no, no, no No, no, no, no No, no, no I make a vow to myself You and I are through Nothing can change my mind I'm sorry, just won't do That's what I say each time But I can't follow through I can't breakaway Though you make me cry I can't breakaway I can't say goodbye No I'll never Never breakaway From you No, no, no, no No, no, no No, no, no, no No, no, no No, no, no Even though you treat me bad And many cruel words are ...
I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to put a link to download the song. I suggest you to use some program to download it, like atube catcher. This is a version I made from the song "Anyone who knows what love is (will understand). It's from Black Mirror, a television drama series created by Charlie Brooker. This is the episode "15 Million Merits" and it's the part where Abi (played by Jessica Brown-Findlay (beautiful!)) sings in the show. That was the first time I've ever heard that song and I really liked it, so I decided to make a long version of the song and with an end. The song is a cover from Irma Thomas original song... I like more Abi's version =) I DON'T OWN THE RIGHTS OF THE SONG OR THE VIDEO. Enjoy!

Louisiana Crossroads, a program of the Acadiana Center for the Arts, introduces a television series highlighting the exceptional work and stories of Louisiana musicians. The pilot episode features concerts and interviews with venerable artists Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, Sonny Landreth and DL Menard along with a soundtrack of original music recorded live.
Allen Toussaint, is an American musician, composer, record producer, and influential figure in New Orleans R&B;. In the early 1960s he wrote and produced a string of hits for New Orleans R&B; artists such as Ernie K-Doe, Irma Thomas, Art and Aaron Neville, and Lee Dorsey. Starting in the 1970s he switched gears to a funkier sound, writing and producing for The Meters, Dr John, and the Wild Tchoupitoulas Mardi Gras Indians tribe. He also began to work with non-New Orleans artists such as Robert Palmer, Willy DeVille and Solomon Burke. Toussaint also launched his own solo career, which peaked in the '70s with the albums From a Whisper to a Scream and Southern Nights.

This bitter earth, what fruit it bears
What good is love that no one shares
And if my life is like the dust that hides the glow of a rose
What good am I heaven only knows
This bitter earth, it can be so cold
Today you're young, too soon you're old
But while the voice within me cries
I'm sure someone may answer my call
This bitter earth may not be so bitter after all
This bitter earth can be so cold
Today you're young, too soon, too soon you're old
But while the voice within me cries
I'm sure someone will answer my call
