Plot: After the death of his father, 20 year old Subaru spends life smoking drugs, feeling sorry for himself and thinking that life is too short to do anything with. He refuses to find work, help his single mother or leave home. Todd, also 20, would love to leave home but the trouble is he can't as he's been imprisoned in the family bathroom since childhood by his deranged mother who blames him for killing her husband. After alienating himself from his family and friends, Subaru's path of mindless self destruction changes its course after a strange incident involving a soiled sock brings Subaru and Todd together. A journey of self discovery that brings heart-ache and redemption unfolds.

Plot: Naoki Ono, a 14-year-old boy murders a young girl in the suburbs of Tokyo. As a result, the large family change their names and live apart, while Naoki goes to a reformatory. Towako, his mother, stays away with her youngest son and youngest daughter, while her husband lives with other family. Three years later, Towako requests that the families reunites and go the island of her birth to be with her dying mother. Thus, the family are back together. But things aren't so simple. Katsumi, Naoki's sister hasn't been able to speak since her brother murdered the girl. Little Subaru has also suffered from the selfishness of his brother. And what of their uncle Satoshi and his family, his own son was killed. The family have never been a 'family' before... Could Grandmother bring them all together?

Plot: Alice (Lynskey) lives in suburban Christchurch, the 'safest place in the world', but she longs for an adventure of American proportions (guns, murder, sex, drugs etc). Her best friend Craig (O'Gorman) changes his name to Johnny because Craig isn't heroic enough for Alice. He is in love with her and waiting for her to settle down so that he can be with her. One day they pick up Seth, an American Texas type, with snakeskin boots and a cowboy hat. He is on the run from a gang of skinheads who he stole money from, a Mr. Trippy truck with a couple who he stole a whole crap load of drugs off, and a big Moari dude on a motorcycle. Alice is immediately enchanted by Seth, Johnny jealous. Seth tricks Alice into taking a trip with him. The chase leads them away from their home and toward the hazardous roads over the Southern Alps. As they head toward the coast Alices trip turns bad and she begins hallucinating, or is Seth really superhuman?
